94.3 Radio One Mumbai has launched a CSR initiative titled – Mumbai at its best, a campaign that urges city folk to take a breather from the pressures of daily city life, and make time for what truly brings fulfillment.

The CSR campaign urges Mumbaikars to step back, pause, breathe, and relook at various passions they might want to pursue, that add meaning and purpose to their lives, but get lost in the fast pace and pressure of urban existence.

Vineet Singh Hukmani, Managing Director, 94.3, Radio One said, “In this world where people often get caught up in a whirlwind of stress, health issues, not finding time for themselves, their families, financial stability etc. 94.3 Radio ONE is urging people to give themselves some space and consider the many options that exist in today’s world – options in career, options in passions that will help them breathe and live life at its best.”

Through this campaign, the station hopes to draw young Mumbaikars just beginning on their careers, into the recognition that they have two options – to make a career of something they are passionate about or to use the resources generated from their job/business to help fulfill their dreams. It encourages listeners to not give up on the things they love and make space for this in their lives so they are more meaningful. For city folk with successful careers and hectic lives, the station’s unique campaign urges them to look at their lives and make space for their dreams, to take time out to do the things they always wanted to do but never had the chance to do it.

The station plans to deliver on its promise by turning into listeners themselves, and inviting experts from the fields of health, food, music, acting, sport, politics, business and more to be hosted as role models on air. These role models would be known personalities/people from all walks of life and will answer questions from listeners based on their own inspiring example of doing this and sharing their perspective and advice on how a listener might do so in his or her life. Actor Shriya Saran and Dalip Tahil, rock musician Uday Benegal, business woman – politician Meera Sanyal, Olympian and Arjuna Awardee Rehan Poncha, celebrity chef – Vicky Ratnani will join host Hrishi K in a live conversation to kick off this campaign for the radio station.

  • Centre approves conduct of FM Phase-Ill auctions and migration of Private FM Radio licenses

    By A Correspondent

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, gave its approval for conduct of FM Phase-Ill auctions and migration (renewal) of Private FM Radio licenses from Phase-II to Phase-Ill in 69 existing cities for 135 channels. This will be on an ascending e-auction basis. Approval was also given to migration (renewal) of private FM Radio licenses from Phase-II to Phase-Ill on payment of migration fee according to TRAI recommendations.

As of now, with the implementation of two phases of private FM Radio, namely Phase I (1999-2000) and Phase II (2005-06), there are 243 private FM channels in operation in 86 cities of the country, spanning 26 States and 3 Union Territories.

The auction process will add an estimated revenue of over Rs. 550 crore to the National Exchequer on successful auctions of all proposed channels. Besides, it will beget the amount realized through the migration process which is dependent on the TRAI recommended formula, where migration fee is linked with the discovery of market prices through the FM Radio Phase III auction.

Roll out of the first batch of FM Radio Phase III auction will provide more channels to listeners with richer content in 69 existing cities.

  • MIB issues Info Memorandum for first batch of Phase III FM auctions

    By A Correspondent

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India issued the Information Memorandum (IM) for e-auction of 135 channels of Private FM Radio in 69 existing cities of Phase II in the first batch. It was issued in continuation of the Union Cabinet’s approval on 16.01.2015 for conduct of FM Phase-Ill auctions for these channels and migration (renewal) of Private FM Radio licences from Phase-II to Phase-III.

Issuance of the Information Memorandum is part of the process of FM Phase III Policy for expansion of FM Radio Broadcasting through private agencies, with the objectives of attracting the agencies to supplement and complement the efforts of All India Radio by operationalising radio stations that provide programmes with local content and relevance, improving the quality of fidelity in reception and generation, encouraging local talent and generating employment.

The memorandum comprises the rules and timetable applicable to the auction and is aimed at informing the prospective bidders about the steps they needed to take in order to pre-qualify and take part in the forthcoming auction.

The memorandum is for information purpose only and has no binding force. Broadly, it outlines the government’s expectations in relation to the proposed auction.  All information contained in it is subject to updating, modification and amendment and does not purport to be complete.

The ministry has issued it to facilitate and encourage potential new entrants to the Indian Broadcasting sector, as well as existing operators, to take an informed decision while participating in the auction.

The ministry has clarified that the memorandum is not intended to form any part of the basis of any investment. Also, neither does it constitute an offer or invitation to participate in the auctions, nor does it constitute the basis of any contract which might be concluded in relation to the auction. It has been put in public domain to merely supplement and update Phase III Policy guidelines and to acquaint the prospective bidders with the design of ascending e-auction.

The ministry has also informed that the recipients of the memorandum intending to participate in the forthcoming auctions should note that Ministry of Information & Broadcasting would separately issue a Notice Inviting Applications (NIA) for participation in the Auction which would be definitive and would take precedence.

Details of the Information Memorandum are available on the Ministry’s website www.mib.nic.in.

MY FM has increased its advertising rates by 20 per cent. The decision to hike rates has been taken to address the current inventory crunch and inflation at an overall level. The hike in ad rates is in all 17cities spread across seven states.

  • Clean up time at India Today group. After shutting 3 regional print editions, inks pact with Times of India group to sell FM network ‘Oye’

    By A Correspondent

The India Today group’s commitment to the media is known. But, then much as emotions and gut influence the way media business and specifically P&L projections are made,  it’s finally the colour of money or the bank balance that’s the final decider.

We know how it works, albeit in a small, small way.

Last week, we learnt of the news that three editions of the India Today magazine were being shuttered. The Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam were reported to be suspended due to indifferent financial conditions. Sad, not just for the India Today group, but also for print journalism (and journalists) in these three languages where news television seems to be booming.

In radio, last Thursday, the stock exchanges were informed of a “non-binding” MoU being signed between Entertainment Network (India) Ltd, a Bennett, Coleman and Company Limited-promoted company, and TV Today Network Limited, an India Today group-promoted companies. Both ENIL and TVTN are listed in the stock exchanges.

    Here’s what the announcement said:

Entertainment Network (India) Ltd has informed BSE that the Committee of Directors of the Board at a meeting held on February 13, 2015, noted that the Company has entered into a non-binding memorandum of understanding with TV Today Network Limited (TVTN), in relation to the proposed purchase of seven radio stations from TVTN, subject to fulfillment of the contractual obligations (which may be agreed between the parties) and receipt of all necessary regulatory approvals including permissions from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.

Simply put, ENIL, the owners of the Radio Mirchi brand, have agreed to buy Oye FM, the seven-station FM radio network  of TVTN, subject to some contractual obligations and government approvals.

Oye 104.8 FM, it may be remembered, had undertaken a high profile relaunch in 2010. It was earlier called Meow FM, working under the same frequency. Meow was a women-centric talk radio station. The TV Today group once also owned Red FM. It exited that venture in 2006.

  • Coffee & Conversations with Rahul Kishore: Week #3: Nisha Narayanan

Coffee & Conversations normally appears on a Friday. We missed two weeks – the first since Good Friday was a holiday and in the last week as we had a connectivity hitch in Goa where he had shifted base for Goafest.  We are carrying one today and will henceforth appear on Fridays. Thanks – Ed

Nisha Narayanan is easily the most glamorous COO I have had the pleasure of meeting. Ever-smiling, tough, balanced and easy-to-get-along-with are some of the things I know about her. I met her in 2009 and she continues to be a good friend till this day and some one I greatly admire.

    I began by asking her:

    Do you consider yourself lucky?

Yes, of course, she says. Opportunities come, you have to grab them and learn. I was an RJ in AIR about 20 years back. Was taking a break from Economics,  and listening to music, when I heard an advert for RJs. I applied and got the job. From there till here is all about a lot of hard work. I don’t come from a media family. My bosses were supportive and gave me space to perform. And I did.

Difficult being a woman in a man’s world?

The challenge is to be taken seriously whether you are a man or a woman, she feels. Initially, the possibility of being taken lightly is higher, being a woman. Once they know you mean business, it goes away. I was travelling 28 days a month for almost the first four years of my job. Sometimes I would come home just to change my suitcase. I got taken seriously pretty soon. I feel for me its business as usual.

    Do you intimidate men?

No, not at all. I am accessible to all and pretty open with all my colleagues. I like wearing sarees to work, which is rare, but I wear them just because I like them. There is no rule for office attire, is there? Ultimately it’s your work that talks, not what you wear to work! People do speak to me very formally and with grace, maybe because of this. I dont think I intimidate anyone

    How do you destress?

I travel a lot on work and this helps me destress as well. Work for me is everything and I love my job. I am learning music nowadays. I know Carnatic music, am learning Hindustani classical these days.

If a movie were made on your life, who would play you and why?

Nandita Sen is the instant answer. She is grounded, simple and level-headed. What Nisha forgot, is that Nandita too, like Nisha, has lovely hair! She supports causes and has a social consciousness that’s essential in today’s age.

    Nisha’s dream job would be?

I will focus on radio only. Right now radio does not reach villages and small towns which is the real I ndia.I want to drive this when the government allows it and help in educating and empowering people via this medium. This is a dream of mine. This wil happen once the regulations are easier for the broadcasters. I will lead this movement once am allowed to.

Three things most important to you?

    Happiness

Freedom to do what I believe in

    Honesty and hard work

How much time do you spend on yourself?

Currently I have no work-life balance. Work, for me, is religion. I have no time for myself, and I don’t feel the pinch either. I do a bit of yoga now and then and some exercise when I find some time

    One word that describes you?

    Passionate

    Favourite animal?

Horse. Because it’s strong, has speed, is regal, and powerful. Also has a great mane (that’s my addition!)

    Lastly one CEO you admire?

Narayan Murthy for his vision, simplicity and for being so humble. Inspiring leader, hands-on guy , leads by example, grounded. Built a huge empire with practically nothing, willing to take risks and maintaining great standards of integrity. In a corporate world which is in the grips of scandals and scams, he set himself high standards of corporate excellence and transparency. And a man with a huge social conscience

  • 94.3 My FM launches rap anthem

    By A Correspondent

94.3 MY FM has launched the Radio rap anthem. The anthem encapsulates the product philosophy and seamlessly highlights the organization’s customer centric focus, the science behind picking up the song list, how unique and interesting content is created for the listeners and the value addition our expert panel bring to the listeners. The anthem has been composed and sung by rapper Badshah, and will also be available on youtube.

The jingle has invigorating and refreshing twist matching the genre of peppy taste, who admire trendy rap. As music style permeates to the ethos of rap lovers, the jingle also reaches out to its listeners through Badshah by spreading the message of most wide spread rap songs frequently played on 94.3 MY FM.

An Integrated marketing campaign is organized for the RAP song through various platforms of traditional and online marketing. The campaign is promoted heavily using print innovation in Dainik Bhaskar and DNA, to give it maximum exposure through digitally equipped social platforms like-Youtube/Facebook. The anthem is also available as ring tone across various mobile operators serving the purpose of business to consumer. The campaign also envisions to ensure the brand connectivity which will be the most vital aspect of the campaign.

On the release of new Anthem, Viplove Gupte-National Programming Head quoted, “Sometimes it just starts with a very vague idea in mind. Such ideas come only during brainstorming. The idea was to create an anthem for radio. While exploring the options on who should create this anthem, one name came very prominently who was not only popular but a supremely talented too – Badshah. Music aficionados have known him for long, when he used to write and perform rap for other singers to when he finally decided to come on his own and as they say, he created history. For regular listeners, Badshah is the man/ creator/ singer/ composer behind two of the most popular hits of last year – Saturday Saturday and Abhi to party shuruhuyihai.”

    Harrish M Bhatia

Commenting on the release, Harrish M Bhatia, CEO 94.3 MY FM said “the vibrant and widely popular Badshah composed the Jingle purely out of his own imagination. He had a brief to work upon, but there was no restriction from our side, hence you can hear the style of Badshah meeting the content of MY FM. This initiative is first of its kind. No other radio station in the world has ever created a rap anthem describing the content of the radio station. Not only it showcased what our philosophy is but, also how we bring unique content to our listeners.”

  • It’s Auctions time!

    By A Correspondent

Phase 3 FM radio auctions are slated to begin from today (Monday, July 27), four-and-a-half years after the policy was announced in July 2011, delayed due to policy paralysis. With the Sun Group’s troubles with the government out of the way, the decks appear to have been cleared for auction of 135 frequencies in 69 cities, beginning 9.30 am on Monday.

Broadcasters are cheering. Linked to these auctions is the renewal of 245 existing radio licences, of which 21 are currently operating under an “extension”, which is set to expire on September 30.The renewal fees for these will be based on prices determined in the auctions.

However, broadcasters fret about several aspects in the FM policy. For example, they are not allowed to broadcast news, unless it’s sourced from All India Radio. Industry officials wonder whether the government wants to control the dissemination of free and fair news to the public at large. The ban on news, industry officials say, could be removed soon, as the Supreme Court grapples with the issue in a case filed by NGO Common Cause.

There is also the 15% “national cap” — no broadcaster can operate more than 52 channels. As a result of what most industry officials describe as an artificial and irrational cap, large networks like Sun (47 channels) and Reliance ADAG (45) are severely limited from expanding.

This cap could hurt the government itself, and cause serious loss in revenues — estimated at 30-50% — apart from holding back the expansion of the medium, as many frequencies in smaller towns, which the big networks would have gone after, will possibly go “unsold”. High reserve prices will also make many of these unviable, say the people cited.

While bidding is generally expected to be rational, given the not-so-great financial returns broadcasters have seen, it could get heated in a few of the bigger metros, where there are few frequencies available for bidding. Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad and mini-metros like Jaipur and Nagpur have only one frequency, while Mumbai and Pune have two. With the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) having already recommended a simple way to double the number of channels, the government is expected to release more frequencies soon, according to industry sources.

Bidders will also be worried with the rapid advance of digital streaming services (Pandora, Spotify, Gaana, and now Apple music).

Though not immediately, digital could eventually cut into FM revenues.

But despite all the issues, the mood in the FM industry is cheerful. Having established its pre-eminent place in “local” and “reminder” advertising, and in targeting the “youth” and “on-the-move” audiences, FM radio has grown faster than TV, print and outdoor advertising in the past few years. More channels will help retain this pace. FM radio commands 15% of the ad pie in Sri Lanka. In India, it’s just 5-6%. If one day Mumbai and Delhi have 25 radio stations each as Colombo has, FM radio should continue to grow faster than its other media siblings.

  • Red FM welcomes Delhi HC decision

    By A Correspondent

Red FM welcomed the outcome of the court case on permission to participate in the auction of First Batch of Private FM Radio Phase 3 channels starting today (July 27).

    Nisha Narayanan

Welcoming the judgment of the Delhi High Court, COO Nisha Narayanan said: “We are one of country’s largest network of FM stations and hopefully post the final outcome of these auctions we shall retain our leadership status.”

From the beginning we had kept a sizeable money to be spent on these auctions (through which government stands to earn with go-ahead on our participation). Our inclusion means a healthy competition and will benefit the entire FM radio industry and media and entertainment industry at large, she said in a communique.
