  • Quirky annual report garners Radio Mirchi the Gold Midas

    By A Correspondent

Radio station Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM won the coveted Gold Midas at the Midas Awards, World’s Best Financial Advertising, for its Annual Report 2011-12, titled Reimagining Radio.

Reimagining Radio is an annual report containing the financials of 2012 but is also an example of innovation. The Annual Report in fact was a direct mailer to shareholders communicating the next big strategy of Radio Mirchi – that is, Digital. It shows the way Mirchi is redefining consumer engagement with its listeners from FM radio to the mobile and internet platforms.

Reimagining Radio captures the essence of the shift from traditional to a new age media company. While listenership of FM radio has shifted almost entirely to mobile phones and digital radio sets, the public perception of radio remains the old-fashioned “box” receiver. The annual report cover juxtaposes the modern with the traditional. The design combines both, the new online platforms where Mirchi engages with its digitally savvy consumers, and the cover has an actual working radio fitted inside which catches terrestrial FM frequency.

G G Jayanta, National Marketing Head said, “Gold at Midas shows that our Annual Report is as hot as our music. We are delighted to receive this award and shall continue to be innovative in our approach”.

Awards that Radio Mirchi has won in the past few months include Popular Radio Channel of the Year at Global Awards for Brand Excellence, Merit at Designomics Awards for Digital Innovation Using Technology for an on air contest called Mirchi Music Housie and a Bronze at Big Bang Awards (Ad Club Bengaluru) for Excellence in Communication & Media for the Purani Jeans Direct Mailer.

  • Shut down by fire, Radio City takes it online

    By A Correspondent

For FM stations, the fire on the night of January 5 at the Pitampura TV Tower in New Delhi brought relaying services in the capital city to a standstill.

The problem is expected to be resolved by January 11, but Radio City 91.1 FM is not waiting until then – it has found a solution to the problem by going live on http://www.planetradiocity.com/radiocitydelhi.

Ashit Kukian, President and COO, Radio City 91.1, said, “As of now, your guess as good as mine as to when it will be back on air… the last we heard is that the work is underway and the technicians are working real hard to put things in place in a couple of days.”

Mr Kukian told MxMIndia, “We were obviously taken aback. It was a bad accident, the cause of which we are still unaware of, but what it meant was that we along with a few other FM channels would not be able to broadcast for a few days. So we had to quickly put our thinking hats and figure out options.”

The station decided to put programming on the web, and managed it in a day’s time. A delighted Mr Kukian states, “We accomplished the task in about 24 hours. If you were to knock off the time lost because of the weekend, we put up the stream in under six hours.”

The station is optimistic about attracting listeners to the radio station online as it already has a web presence. Mr Kukian says, “There is a huge traction we already have for web radio. We are sure to aggregate a greater number of fans. Going by the great initial buzz, we are confident that we will be able to aggregate a large number of listeners.”

The silver lining in this particular cloud may well be the long-awaited rise of web radio, which will enable listeners to access music not by city but by listening choice.

  • AdoRoi launches response-led media planning

    By A Correspondent

Mumbai-based AdoRoi Marketing Science has introduced two new product offerings – Response Led Media Planning and Ad Insertion-to-Sales tracking.

    Amit Nevrekar

Said Amit Nevrekar, Chief Operating Officer, AdoRoi, “It’s a scientific way to study the effectiveness of the media plan through Response per Spot (RPS) and Cost per Response (CPR)”. Explaining the concept, Mr Neverkar said: “The Ad exposure/ response are identified through unique Ad-Tracking codes for each media vehicles across TV, Print, Radio and Internet.” The response is analysed through a proprietary real time reporting software and Client Dashboard. The main advantage of this methodology is it provides Advertisement Exposure for a particular issue/insertion as against the current Media Vehicle Exposure based on Reach & Frequency model. The responses can further be analysed by media, creative, spot duration, placement, Ad-size, page no etc. The model, according to Mr Nevrekar, is beneficial for brands, which don’t just carry out brand awareness creation exercise but aggressively practise direct marketing for instant conversions through call for action or promotional offers.

In this method, the dealer panel in PAN India Print campaign is replaced by AdoRoi’s unique Ad-Track tele code per media vehicle, thus saving the effort and also cost per sq cm. When any customer calls for an enquiry, his/her call is directly patched with the nearest dealer basis his Geo-position and the dealer database through our patented technology. Each customer enquiry is provided with a promo-code linked to media vehicle which can be tracked against sale. The responses generated per insertion across media vehicles can be analysed on real-time client dashboard. The learnings can be efficiently used for optimizing the media plan for better ROI by maximizing RPS and minimizing CPR.
