  • Zee@25 | Ashok Kurien: Zee changed the Indian consumer forever

    Ashok Kurien

It was a dream that was waiting to become one big reality. When the rest of India was hooked on to the goings-on of the Gulf War in 1991 through relay from international news channels, a bunch of visionaries were contemplating launching a private channel that would do something similar in India. Thus was sown the seed of India’s first and private Hindi channel, Zee.

When we spoke with him in October 2012 on the occasion of Zee’s 20th anniversary, Ashok Kurien, the man who ran Ambience Advertising which handled the ad business of Essel Group, recountedto Johnson Napier how a chance conversation took shape to create one of India’s earliest and most successful Hindi channels. Mr Kurien continues to be on the Board of Directors of Zee Entertainment.

Do you recall how you reacted when Mr Subhash Chandra first came to you with the idea of launching Zee? From what we hear, it’s after your reassurance and active support that he got into it.)

January 1991: Subhash, my client at Esselworld, and I were watching the Gulf War ‘Live’ on CNN. It was our early exposure to satellite TV in India.

“Why can’t we do this here in India?” the conversation went.

“What do you know about TV?” asked Subhash.

“More than anyone else,” I replied, having spent many years on the ad agency side: Concepts and Pilot programmes, Sponsored programmes and FCT during the Doordarshan days…

“Write me a business plan,” said Subhash.

I did… and the rest is history.

Of course, Subhash was way ahead of me, with advice and plans from some ex-Doordarshan people.

The first 5 or 6 years, working hands-on to help Subhash build India’s first private TV station, was the most exciting chapter of my life.

Zee changed the Indian entertainment scenario, and along with it changed the Indian consumer forever.

Zee obviously had the advantage of being the first mover in the Hindi space, and later there were many others who entered the scene. What according to you is the reason Zee has been such a success story?

Zee moved fast, was always the first, and stayed far ahead of everyone for over the first decade.Zee understood the emotions and tastes of the Indian consumer. It took a long time for the competition to figure it out… mainly by hiring Zee TV’s people.

Other than being a director on the Board, are you active in advising the Zee management presently?

No advice to Zee at all….. unless I am asked to.I have played a role in helping Dish TV grow to leadership over its first 3 or 4 years, and now helping to take the Zee group into new media with India.com.

If there was one thing that Zee could have possibly have done differently in these 20 years, what would it be?

Zee should have launched a Tamil/South channel 15 years ago. But it was my error of judgement and ill advice that prevented that. My one, big, unforgettable mistake!

Zee, it’s said, mirrors Mr Subhash Chandra’s personality: dynamic, aggressive, a maverick, often restless, cost-conscious, risk-taker and a visionary. He’s been a friend for many years, would these descriptors be appropriate (for him and Zee). And how much would you attribute the success of Zee to Mr Chandra and in recent years, his family?

Subhash’s personality is all this and more. He is fearless and will walk where angels fear to treadBut as a friend I have seen the warm, but very private, human side of him too. He has great inner strength, and this too is inbuilt in Zee’s DNA.

Zee’s success was driven almost 100 percent by Subhash for many years, and only in the last decade or so did the professionals who joined Zee start contributing majorly.

Punit has reinvented the ‘creative magic’ that Zee started with 20 years ago.

But today, it’s certainly TEAM ZEE!!

  • HUL tops Zee Mindspace Awards winners

    By A Correspondent

    Video by Santosh Jangid

On Saturday, amidst a cross-section of the advertising and marketing fraternity, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited announced the winners of the first edition of ‘Zee Mindspace Awards’ with the aim recognising brands that have captured maximum ‘MindSpace’.

Hindustan Unilever led the awards tally with wins across five categories, followed by LG Corp with three category wins, Mondelez and Coca-Cola with two category wins each. The winners were decided on the basis of a nationwide survey that was carried out by Nielsen, evaluating 288 brands across 36 categories. The awards ceremony was held on the second (and last day) of #ZeeMelt 2016.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJEcze7oMls

Speaking at the awards function, Punit Goenka, MD & CEO, ZEEL said, “Zee Mindspace Awards is a property which gives marketers a true reflection of their efforts sown in building brands. The very essence of the awards is its USP – the winners are not chosen by a jury but by the consumers themselves. The structured research conducted across the nation by Nielsen has empowered the consumers to select the most recalled brands as the winners, in a unique and transparent process. Congratulations to all the deserving winners!”

Said Sunil Buch, Chief Business Officer, ZEEL who spearheaded the initiative, “For any brand to get into the Mindspace it requires all the elements of marketing and sales to come together. Today there are standalone awards for creativity, marketing, media etc. but none that holistically represents the orchestra required to get into and stay in the mind of the consumer. The Zee Mindspace Awards 2016 are the first to recognise the success of all the elements that go into occupying the Mindspace.”

Added Prashant Singh, Managing Director, South Asia, Nielsen: “Zee Mindspace Awards is the first forward-looking, future-oriented awards property that looks at not just a part of the marketing process, but at the entire outcome. After an extensive online survey of over 12,000 consumers, it was impressive to see which brands in India command the maximum consumer ‘mindspace’ based on our parameters of top-of-mind recall, popularity, the kind of advocacy the brand commands, the desire to own the brand and finally the buzz it generates.  Congratulations to these winners who have managed to carve the maximum mindspace in consumers’ minds.”

  • Multi-track Melt takes off!

    By A Correspondent

Sold Out, screamed a tweet from Rajesh Kejriwal on Thursday evening. There was reason for joy. New Delhi is where a large number of the big marketers are based, but it’s not a regular venue for most large advertising and marketing events.

Goafest is, well, in Goa. Some of the industry conferences happen in Delhi, but the big ones are almost always in Mumbai.

So when Rajesh Kejriwal announced that he would hold Melt in Delhi after the first edition in Mumbai last year, there were many questions. But he went on, as if in missionary zeal.

Delhi deserves a big event like Melt, he told us.

His key supporters – Zee and GroupM were game, so what more would one need.

Over 1300 registrations happened, and a cross-section of the A&M fraternity are in attendance.

The event kicked-off with CVL Srinivas, CEO, GroupM South Asia, speaking about agencies of the future – a topic that he was best placed to highlight and his passion and deep insights into the industry business came through to the audience very clearly. Simultaneously, Mark Van Iterson, Global Head of Design & Concept, Heineken addressed an insightful Osmosis session highlighting the journey of the brand Heineken and the positively disruptive creativity that the brand has been an advocate of since its very beginning. He showcased various innovations, right from designing the bottles and the play with colors and elements of the brand identity. The conference had discussions on innovation advertising, present-day possibilities and tomorrow’s heights by speakers such as Vanessa Clifford (Deputy Chief Executive, News Works), Andrew O’Dell (CEO & Co-Founder, Pereira & O’Dell), Parminder Singh Parry (Twitter India), CVL Srinivas (CEO, GroupM South Asia) and Dave Trott (Author & Blogger) and Raju Narisetti (News Corp).

Said Rajesh Kejriwal, Founder CEO of Kyoorius, said, “Zee Melt was and is the first large training seminar cum conference in Delhi and I am very pleased that Delhi responded so positively. The energy is great.”

Giving the conventional a break, the Thinking Sideways sessions got the delegates’ mind’s ticking with creative and disruptive ideas. There were speakers such as Nicole Yershon (Ogilvy & Mather Group), Tom Goodwin (Havas Media), Vanessa Clifford (News Works) and Viv Craske (Live & Breathe) who talked about surviving the digital commotion and opportunities for innovation solutions.

Then there was was the BARC session on ‘Understanding Viewability in Today’s Digital Era’. It focused on understanding the current global standard metrics being used in digital measurement with respect to Ad effectiveness, Ad viewability and Digital ROI by speakers like Brian Murphy (VP, Product Management, Integral Ad Science), Paul Goode (SVP, Strategic Partnerships, comScore), Guy Barbier (Business Lead of India, Moat) and Partho Dasgupta (CEO, BARC India).

“This is the second year we have partnered with Zee MELT and it has been a great association. We hosted two sessions in this edition of Zee Melt, one talking about ad viewability and the other on how big data can drive advertising effectiveness. We use this platform to start engaging stakeholders in meaningful conversations, on issues that the industry may face tomorrow. Indian media and marketing space is going through a huge evolution and Zee MELT provided us the right platform to present some key ideas in this domain to the right audience,” said BARC India CEO Partho Dasgupta.

Adding another layer of interactivity to the festival were a series of workshops conducted by the likes of D&AD and Maxus & IoT on immerging topics like branding for startups and mobile marketing. Happy Finish wooed delegates with an impressive display of high-end interactive technology at VR Cinema and how to make everything possible in visual storytelling.  SAP Hybris showcased superb commerce solutions for the market place and how it is blurring the lines between the online and offline world.

Said Ashish Limaye, CEO APAC, Happy Finish:“Virtual Reality(VR) has become an innovative marketing tool in various sectors like Health, Automobiles, Real Estate and Fashion to name a few. At MELT 2016, the Happy Finish Team is honoured to show how rich content in VR develops high levels of engagement that marketers are reaching out to, for a better ROI.”

Added Sunil Buch, Chief Business Officer, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited said, “Zee Melt began on a great note with stimulating sessions by renowned speakers from around the world. The event witnessed fantastic participation from the marketing and communications fraternity.”

  • HarperCollins chronicles Dr Subhash Chandra’s life in new autobiography

    By A Correspondent

Leading publihser HarperCollins India has announced the launch of the autobiography of Dr Subhash Chandra of Chairman of Zee and Essel groups. The book is an unusually candid memoir of a truly desi self-made businessman who came to Delhi at age twenty with seventeen rupees in his pocket. Today, he has a net worth of $6.3 billion and annual group revenues of in excess of $3 billion. Senior journalist Pranjal Sharma helped put the book together.

Dr Chandra, the promoter of Essel Group and Zee, is an unlikely mogul. Hailing from a small town in Haryana, where his family ran grain mills, Chandra has been a perennial outsider, repeatedly aiming high and breaking into businesses where he was considered an interloper Starting work as a teen to pay off family debts, Dr Chandra had to rely on bluff, gumption and sheer hard toil to turn things around. A little bit of luck and political patronage saw him make a fortune in rice exports to the erstwhile USSR.

Always a risk-taker, Chandra then had the vision of getting into broadcasting early, even as established media players failed to see its potential. Zee TV, India’s first private Indian TV channel, changed the rules of the game and tickled the fancy of a public starved of entertainment.

Several gutsy initiatives followed, though not all of them were successful. Chandra’s attempts to launch satellite telephony and a cricket league came a cropper. But the man continues to reinvent himself; he is now also focusing on infrastructure and smart cities.

The book was unveiled by the Prime Minister on Wednesday and then a day later amidst much fanfare at the Jaipur Litfest.

    By Dyanne Coelho

Zee and MSM walked away with 14 and 13 awards respectively at the PromaxBDA India awards held on Wednesday. Awards across 37 different categories were were presented with Star India coming in third with 10 awards and UTV Entertainment Television Limited and NGC Network won 8 awards each. While Zee bagged 9 Gold and 5 Silver Awards, MSM won 6 Gold and 7 Silver Awards. In all, 31 gold and 31 silver MUSE trophies and six gold and six silver ISIS trophies were awarded.

Earlier, the 12th edition of PromaxBDA India kicked off at the Westin, Mumbai with an opening address by Conference Chair and Colors CEO Raj Nayak. “Short form storytelling has come of age,” he said, “The viewer today has evolved. It’s up to you to catch them head on.”

David Shing, Digital Prophet, AOL began the morning session on an energetic note talking about the various futuristic ideas that are revolutionizing the world. “Personal experience is the new form of entertainment,” he said. Shing highlighted the word ‘Pizzled’ which is a combination of the words pissed and puzzled to describe the feeling a person gets when the person he/she is talking to is constantly busy on the phone during a conversation. “There is an information overload today and bad ads are the uninvited guests to the party.” Shing spent the most part of his talk discussing smart objects like a ring that switches on your television when you write TV in mid-air while wearing it or the same with your fan. Smart objects like the Power Suit, doesn’t require you to carry a wallet around, you merely move the tip of your coat sleeve over the billing machine and your meal is paid for, Shing explained pointing out that we would never see influential persons like President Barack Obama walking around with a wallet. “The new generation is who we should give a shit about,” Shing said, explaining that they are the ones who will be the users of these products in the future. It is all about engaging people in the calm and the chaos, he said.

Nicole Velik of The Ideas Bodega followed, opening with a line that left everyone a little puzzled. “Creativity is everyone’s business,” she said. She went on to explain how once at her workplace, the creative team invited all the other teams; HR, Admin, finance, etc to join them in their brainstorming session, and some amazing ideas popped up. Creativity diminishes as age increases, she pointed out highlighting a few statistics, and it is most often an influential person like a teacher or a parent that kills some part of your creative self by telling you seemingly harmless things like draw within the lines, she said. “When all else fails, role-play,” she said. It helps to thoroughly understand the brand you are trying to sell. Come up with ideas that will get you fired and then pull those ideas back into reality, she advised. “It is much better to tame a wild idea, than to make a boring idea great.”

Liz Dunning of Dunning Penney Jones shared stories of branding across the globe. America doesn’t like foreigners buying into their brands and companies, she said. Europe on the other hand is facing a major invasion by China, as a multitude of Chinese manufacturers are buying into European brands. “Indians sometimes take over a foreign brand and handle it way better than the home country ever could,” she said pointing out India’s vast growth in the industry. American brands are failing because they are not ready to spend, she pointed out. You have to spend on your product and on advertising and branding to make it a success. She cited the example of Cartoon Network and its sister channel Boomerang highlighting how each has a very different approach to branding, yet when you see the advertisements for either you will know they are connected.

The post-lunch session of the day saw two panel discussions. The first one was titled, The Shift: Exploring new demographics, audiences and mind sets. Rajiv Bakshi, VP-Marketing, Discovery Networks, Asia Pacific, South Asia and Ajay Vidyasagar, Regional Director, APAC, Youtube Partnerships, Google were the participants of this discussion. It was moderated by Meenakshi Menon, Spatial Access. The session highlighted key aspects of the digital versus the television medium. The speakers shared relevant insights into each, including costing of content creation, consistency in programming, audience response, advertising, revenue streams and the growth of technology. “If you can bring consumers to have the conversations that you want them to have, then it is a job well done, whether on the internet space or on a TV set,” Menon said, concluding debate one.

The next debate concentrated on the art of making a pitch to a client. ‘Pitch Therapy: A two-way conversation about the challenges of engagement’ was the topic of discussion which saw four participants; Kartik Sharma, MD, Maxus, South Asia, Paritosh Painter, Network Creative Director, Reliance Broadcast Network, Abhijit Joshi a former Ogilvy employee and Namit Sharma a former Zee employee. During the due course of this session  moderated by Tarun Katial, CEO, Reliance Broadcast Network, pointers on what to do and what not to do during a pitch were discussed. Know what your client wants, have a conviction and transfer that conviction to your client and believe in your pitch is what was unanimously agreed upon. “You have to sell your idea in the first 20 seconds,” Painter said. Pitching an idea is just like wooing your boyfriend or girlfriend, Joshi added.

  • Why Sun shines more in Bengaluru

    By Our Research Editor

This is the kind of news which could spark off some wild statements from political formations if it were to happen in a city like Mumbai. But we weren’t really very surprised when we heard that Garden City Bengaluru had such a significant viewing of Sun TV as per BARC data.

First, let’s take a look at the pecking order of non-Hindi/English channels in Karnataka.

Let’s re-look at the table above in the main image, sans the shining sun 🙂 :

Surprised? Well, for those who’ve been to cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru would know the large influence of Gujarati and Tamil in these two cities. The decadal growth in Bengaluru has been much faster compared to the Rest of Karnataka (1L+), as per the Census of India 2011. Bengaluru had 52% share of total 1L+ population of Karnataka in Census 2011, up from 47% in 2001.

The population and growth numbers for the past two decades are as follows:

As per BARC India estimates of TV owning households as on March 2015, Bengaluru has 58% share of the 1L+ population of Karnataka.

As compared to an approximate 3% Tamil-speaking population in Karnataka, around 21% of the total population in Bengaluru speak Tamil. This leads to a significant viewing of Sun TV in Bengaluru.

The viewing details of Sun TV in Bengaluru and the Rest of Karnataka are as follows:

We posed this question to a Bengaluru-based media analyst and he said that while it’s not true that Kannada channels aren’t doing well in the city, it’s just that as a single channel Sun is ahead. If the content improves, one can be sure Kannada programmes will go ahead of Sun.

Until then the sun shines for Sun in Bengaluru.

  • Kyoorius launches Melt, 2-day ad, media & marketing festival

    By A Correspondent

Transmedia Fine Papers-promoted Kyoorius has launched Melt 2015, a festival of creativity for the advertising, media, digital and marketing industry in partnership with Zee Entertainment, media services conglomerate GroupM and London-based creativity body D&AD.

The festival will take place on May 21 and 22 in Mumbai at the National Sports Club of India (NSCI) and neighbouring Nehru Centre, culminating in the Kyoorius Advertising and Digital Awards night on May 22 at the NSCI. “We expect over 5000 people over the two days which will be packed with seminars, exhibitions and workshops,” said Rajesh Kejriwal, Founder and CEO of Kyoorius who has curated the event, adding that the intent is to build the event around four pillars: Learning, Networking, Showcase and Celebration. “Our objective is to see everyone carry a key takeaway from each of these buckets,” said Kejriwal. The Kyoorius Awards will continue to have Colors as the presenting sponsor.

    Punit Goenka

Said Punit Goenka, MD & CEO of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL): “Zee is proud to partner with Kyoorius at Melt 2015, which promises to be India’s largest celebration of creativity. Zee Melt offers us a platform to curate and present thoughts and lessons that all of us in the business need to know.“ Zee is also hosting the third edition of its Mindspace series at Melt with leading marketing heads from global and Indian corporations in attendance. “We are also looking at crowdsourcing content ideas, where we will give people the opportunity to put forth their ideas which Zee will then evaluate,” Goenka said.

Added Tim Lindsay, CEO of D&AD in a statement: “Engaging the wider marketing communications industry in a conversation about excellence – in insight, creativity and execution – can only have positive economic, cultural and social outcomes. This is at the heart of what D&AD and Kyoorius are about.” Like last year, the judging process of the event will continue to be powered by D&AD.

    CVL Srinivas

Talking of GroupM’s association with the event, CVL Srinivas, CEO, GroupM South Asia said that while there is a lot of talk about digital media, technology and data, “ultimately, ours is an ‘ideas’ business. We continue to support many initiatives that act as a rich learning ground for the industry. We will be partnering with Kyoorius and Zee to help curate the event and organise some interesting sessions around creativity in the digital era.” GroupM in partnership with HT Media Group and Kyoorius will conduct a print advertising contest, where entries will be invited from not only the creative community in advertising, but from young professionals who have a great print idea to share on the given brief.

While attempts are made to not compare Melt with Goafest officially, the three-day festival held in April in Goa by the Advertising Agencies Association of India and the Advertising Club, industry persons are looking forward to both events. Srinivas believes it’s incorrect to compare the two and said GroupM is actively associated with both events as also with many such initiatives. Said Goenka: “We are confident of what Melt is going to deliver for the industry, and that’s why Zee has chosen to partner it.” And Goafest? “We’ve been associated with it in the past, and will continue our association with it,” Goenka clarified.

Elaborating on the way he has built the festival, Kejriwal said Melt has no sponsors. “We only have partners. So, Zee is a principal partner, GroupM and D&AD are strategic partners, then there are other partners who are bringing in content in some way or the other.” The IP of each of the events at the fest will be owned by the partners, he added.

Partners include Zee, GroupM, D&AD, Hindustan Times, Happy Finish, afaqs, Pepperfry, Future Laboratory, Hyper Island, The Partners, BrandMusiq, One Eyeland, Maxus, Youtube, Google, BARC and many more in the pipeline. Details on Melt can be accessed at readytomelt.com.
