  • Bindass goes Rest Less, for good

    By A correspondent

It’s perhaps a brand that’s far ahead of its time and is known for taking generational leaps to adapt to new market dynamics. It was thus natural on its part to undergo a makeover exercise once again what with the youth of today having undergone a radical transformation in their habits.

Being the third such makeover for the company, youth brand Bindass has announced yet another repositioning exercise that’ll see them don a new garb in everything that they do. Effective April 16, Bindass will present itself in a new and refined avatar to the world with a focus that’ll be even more skewed towards the youth of today. The new change would read: Bindass – Rest Less.

Elaborating on the proposed switchover, Keith Alphonso, Business Head, Bindass said: “April 16 is the switch-on date where you’ll see Bindass in a new packaging, new promos, new music, new logos & graphics, new shows and every other touchpoint as well.”

Delving into the specifics of the makeover exercise, Mr Alphonso said that the entire exercise kicked off in October 2011 where a few important points were taken up for analysis. “The first was we took a long hard look at our business and committed to our stated business intent that we wanted to broadbase Bindass into a youth brand and not just exist as a television channel. The idea was to get Bindass to a position where it was relevant to young people and fulfil a very visible need-gap. We thus went back to the market and for three months did a fair amount of research with Ormax and MarketGate and we zeroed in on a position which we are going to craft Bindass as a brand to occupy.”

Explaining the positioning that the brand sought to occupy, Mr Alphonso said: “The position is something that celebrates success and was based on two trends that we observed over a period of time. One trend was the super-confidence that the Indian youth of today boast about where they see opportunity in everything that they do. But if you scratch a little below the surface, you will notice a certain amount of fragility as well. That’s because of the kind of competition that has been created in the marketplace. As we put it, it’s called ‘fragile invincibility’ – as confident and invincible as they seem they are also plagued with problems and they look for a brand as a touchstone. So what we are doing now is to craft Bindass as the brand that gets you there. The brand that holds your hand on that journey and not to be confused with a career and competition brand, so to speak. That’s because for the young person, success has many connotations. This was the value proposition that we latched on to.”

Having shortlisted on the value proposition, the next move was to get help on the communications front and search for options on how to sell the concept to the desirable TG. That’s where they approached Taproot co-founder Agnello Dias, who has been associated with the brand in its previous makeover exercise as well. Mr Alphonso affirmed: “We got Agnello Dias of Taproot onboard who suggested the tagline Bindass -Rest Less. The idea was that it celebrates constant perpetual energy of the youth of today. So the brand value is about celebrating the people who rest less and succeed. As for the communication, it will happen across multiple mediums, including mass media, print, and so on, but importantly, however we are perceived we will ensure that the spirit of Bindass – Rest less will be embedded there.”

Mr Agnello Dias, Chairman and Co-founder, Taproot India, added: “A key trait that marks youth behaviour today is a sense of constant motion; everyone is either going somewhere or doing something all the time. This non-stop motion, well-channelized is the new objective ideal. Settling down is fast going down the priority list. The bubbling undercurrents of discovery, exploration, invention, challenge, action seem to top that list. The new brand campaign for Bindass captures precisely this, that the youth today are ‘Rest Less’ and actually rest even lesser. We had earlier worked on Bindass’ immensely successful ‘What I am’ campaign as well which really caught on with the youth and this time around with Rest Less we hope to continue connecting with them yet again.”

On how these changes would be reflected on the channel and other properties,  Mr Alphonso stated: “We will be launching two new shows – Live out Loud and Fear Less – in April and July, which will reflect the new change that we are talking about. LOL will let individuals say the one thing they always wanted to say with 250 people from Bindass supporting them in their stance. Fear Less is a gang of friends coming together to help one of their own overcome a debilitating fear. With these shows and more we are moving to a stage where we want to aid in transformation.”

In fact that’s not all, as part of its efforts to be seen as an integrated brand Bindass would be tapping the medium of YouTube in a big way. “We would be launching a new channel on YouTube where we will be releasing short-form programmes only for that space. That medium has its own unique consumption patterns and parameters. We will be creating exclusive content for users on YouTube and not rehash content from somewhere else. Even our Facebook page will go under a radical new layout where you’ll have newsletters giving you information on movie deals, contests, tickets for matches, and so on. The idea is everything that we do is going to be about helping young kids get to their goal faster,” assured Mr Alphonso.

When asked on the need for undertaking continuous makeover exercises, Alphonso reverted: “It has been a deliberate move to undergo repositioning again. When we launched in 2007 we were about Bindass – TV, Web,Mobile- that was a time when other channels were yet to discover multiple content. From there to 2010, we came out with a very attitude-based positioning which was Bindass – What I Am. There was a prevalent thought among young people at that point in time that they just wanted to be themselves. We reflected this non-judgmental spirit of theirs by saying it is an attitude. That was successful for us because it pushed us into a branded play. As of today, because we wanted to broad base our brand, because we wanted to be seen as more than a television channel, to become a new touchstone so that new business opportunities can be explored – for that to happen, brand Bindass had to have a call to action. And, therefore, the new positioning of Rest Less.”

While the first two repositioning exercises did wonders for Bindass in terms of acceptability and attracting GRPs, the idea going forward would be to move beyond being just a channel and move into a space where it could become a huge brand by itself. Affirmed Mr Alphonso: “Probably in a year or two, I could launch Bindass range of jeans and get into doing other such activities; that is what our focus would be going forward. At the end of 18-odd months, you will see the emergence of umbrella youth brand Bindass that will also have a television channel, an events division, branded services, digital, and so on.”

  • 10 Days to Go-Goafest! It’s all about celebrating ideas: Arvind Sharma

As the countdown begins for Goafest 2012, Arvind Sharma, Chairman Goafest 2012 and Chairman, India Sub-continent, Leo Burnett, speaks to MxMIndia’s Tuhina Anand on the festival this year and why it is truly the celebration of creativity at its best.

What can one expect from Goafest 2012? How will it different from last year?

The Festival will stay true to its fundamental vision. It is a platform for celebrating creativity and a source of inspiration. Most importantly for the entire fraternity comprising young and not-so-young, Goafest is the preparatory ground for the industry to gauge where and how to go forward. I feel that the core, sometimes, is forgotten in the bid to do something new.

I mean, we live in a world which is changing rapidly, so having something new is inevitable. If you look at successful festivals around the world 90 per cent remain the same. Similarly, at Goafest, we have defined categories and 95 per cent remain the same in terms of predictability of entering, judging, Awards Governing Council and Goafest Committee. There is consistency in that format and our effort of providing conversations. All this is same as what one had last year.

Having said that about the predictability factor, let me also add that moving forward is equally important.

    So, what’s new?

This year we are looking at ways to involve clients in a meaningful way. The fact is that, there would be no advertising if there were no clients. The business of advertising is about partnering with the marketers. We, at Goafest, believe in evolving vision that doesn’t really mean evolving identically, but in evolving together. We look at bringing in more opportunity for conversations and that’s the reason why we have brought clients this time into the seminar.

There is a slight change in the format. So far, there have been series of international speakers, while some of these presentations have been received well, some weren’t, and there have been questions on the relevance of those to India. Changing that, we have brought in senior Indian clients to raise questions after the presentation. So there will be 30-35 minutes for the speaker followed by 10-15 minutes of Q&A led by a senior Indian client. He or she will be the voice and mind of the audience and bring in the Indian perspective to the entire presentation by agreeing, challenging, bringing contextual light and interpreting the whole presentation.

We have also brought the Marketing Wizards to Goafest. This is calling the under-30 staff of the marketing community. We have had a good response and we expect overall 70 to 80 major advertisers to participate, which include team of two people representing to some even registering team of 30 people even though we have a limit to numbers.

Why this whole idea of bringing in Grand Prix to all verticals?

Grand Prix, traditionally, has been awarded in Print, TV and Integrated. This year, we have expanded the Grand Prix to cover all the 9 verticals. This was not an easy decision and the step was debated. We believe that the time has come for specialists in area to move to the centrestage. I don’t really know if the jury will find works worthy enough for Grand Prix in each of the vertical, but this would help in finding worthy advertising and celebrating it around India and even around the world.

For a young designer who is always on the periphery of an agency, winning gold is good but winning the GrandPrix might help in moving the same person to leadership position. We hope that the move will catalyze long term fundament change in the way we create advertising.

We hear this year there are entries from other South Asian countries?

Yes, we have entries from Sri Lanka and Pakistan and we will have delegates from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In South Asia, we have different cultures but there are more similarities than differences within those cultures and we can learn a lot from each other. Unfortunately, the politics of the subcontinent is more difficult. We had planned a road show in various countries but our passports got stuck and this could not happen.

Can you throw some light on the conclave and the seminar?

We have put together an enviable list of names and these are speakers who really are worthy of listening. Jean-Yves Naouri, COO Publicis Group spends almost 150 days in flight. He knows what is happening in the business around the world and will share his valuable insight. Tim Love has been involved with theCannesand he played important role in the shaping of the future of Omnicom Group. Jonathon Mildenhall, VP of Global Advertising Strategy and Creative Excellence, CocaCola promises to be stimulating session. Steven King, CEO, ZenithOptimedia will also be on panel. Anuradha Sengupta, who loves throwing challenge, will be part of the session.

On the seminar speakers, Amir Kassaei, Chief Creative Officer, DDB Worldwide, Rishad Tobaccowala, Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, VivaKi and Prof John Philip Jones, Emeritus Professor at the Newhouse School of Public Communications,Syracuse University,New Yorkwill be speakers. While the world is talking video as the future, Lucas Watson, Vice President, Global Sales and Industry Marketing, YouTube will tell us how and Simon Wardle, Chief Strategy Officer, Octagon will be worth listening to for all the planners in the industry. Erik Vervroegen, International Creative Director, Publicis Worldwide will give his take on creativity. We will announce one more name in this list soon. From the Indian marketers side who will be part of Q&A, we have Sanjay Behl from Reliance, Kainaz Gazder from P&G, Viral Oza from Nokia, Gayatri Yadav from Star India and Hemant Bakshi from Unilever.

Awards have been under the scanner, do the controversies surrounding it mar the event in anyway?

Awards show will have criticism. What is driving us is the celebration of creativity and look at this Fest as a platform to prepare ourselves for the way industry will go forward.

Why did the Goafest Committee decide the theme – Magic of Ideas?

Everything that happens at festivals is ideas. While advances in technology and database is important, but what we celebrate is ideas. If we add everything on an excel sheet, we will see that when a brand gets a lot of traction or if it is ignored, it is all to do with ideas. No client launches a product with the intention of not succeeding, so getting it right is important. For a product to be embraced, it has to connect with people and this cannot be reduced to a formula but has to do with the magic of ideas.

The awards have been leaked in the past, losing some of its credibility, how do you ensure that this doesn’t happen this year?

We believe that awards will not be leaked. In this, the media as well as the organizers have a role to play. There is a symbiotic relation. We do our best to avoid any such incident. Some information has to be shared with the media beforehand, but there is an embargo on release information and last year journalistic fraternity showed a sense of responsibility. I will add that the media has equally a big stake in the Fest.

What will you say to the agencies that have decided to stay away from the fest?

Whether to participate or not is an agency’s decision. We on our part, including the AGC, have been ensuring that our job that includes category, rules, audit and the jury does their job well. Let creative minds debate as for us touch wood, thing are going as per planned.

If you have to send a formal invite to the industry for the Fest what would you say as to why must the fraternity attend?

You will get to see the best of work and see the best creative minds judging what they think is worthy of awards. You get to interact with seniors and bright creative minds which many times is impossible in the busy schedules that we lead. Besides you will get to hear exceptional speakers’ line-up.

Goafest creates the space for debate with peers and youngsters, which includes large group discussions and one-on-one interaction. We are expecting around 2,500 people to attend Goafest this year. Not to forget that Goafest is not heavy-handed like training sessions but good learning place where you also have loads of fun.

Personally for you, how has it been plugging all the gaps before the festival?

We have a very big team working across agencies. There is a sense of joy and shared sense of purpose to make Goafest a success. We are in it together and there still is a fair bit of work to be done. However, it’s been an enjoyable experience.

  • TIL brings a bigger and better IPL season 5

    By A Correspondent

Times Internet Limited (TIL), in partnership with YouTube, is back with a slew of new features to woo cricket lovers for the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which starts on Wednesday.

TIL’s dedicated IPL site, ipl.indiatimes.com, now offers interactive scorecards, high-definition streaming of IPL matches, DVR features (to rewind during a match), online radio commentary in partnership with AIR , video-on-demand facility, and an all new ‘Battleground’ section.

Making its debut this year is the interactive 10 minute video show ‘Pitch Studio’, where fans can interact with stalwarts from the cricketing world including a former cricket team captain and expert, by posting their comments and questions on Facebook and Twitter. These pre-match shows will give a quick recap of past matches and talk about key events, with guest stars adding an element of surprise.

“Having attracted a total of 72 million global views last year, we are looking to make IPL 2012 a lot more user-centric, giving user’s total control over their IPL viewing experience,” says Rishi Khiani, CEO, Times Internet Limited.

In the ‘Battleground’ section, IPL fans can post their comments and also indulge in activities such as throwing tomatoes and eggs at the other side during a live match. The new DVR feature will allow fans to rewind on the time-line and watch any part of the match that they may have missed. Adding to all the fun is the cheerleader application, video scorecard that captures video highlights on the fly during the match stream, and the video-on-demand feature, which offers match highlights such as fours, sixes and face-offs between players.

Given the phenomenal success of the Indiatimes platform during the previous IPL season, it’s no surprise that this year too, some of its heavy weight sponsors including Maruti, Coca Cola, and Samsung, have put their weight behind TIL as premium sponsors.

  • Mindshare’s YouTube record with ‘Boost Sachin Anthem’

    By A Correspondent

Mindshare, India’s leading media services agency has recently created a unique milestone for itself on the back of a powerful digital media strategy. A record breaking 1 million hits were clocked for the ‘Boost Sachin Anthem’ in just under 2 days, making it the fastest video on Youtube to have reached a million views.

Hosted on Youtube on the February 8, sung by the latest rage, Dhanush of the Kolaveri Di fame, the anthem video now boasts of a Gold Trending Medal from YouTube, with over 4 million views as on February 22.

The challenge for Mindshare was to create buzz around the brand and noteworthy 23 year long association with Sachin Tendulkar as their brand ambassador. Therefore, there could not have been a better proposition than creating a dedicated anthem in the honour of the little master.

The task was twofold – first, bringing the idea to life. This involved creating a powerful piece of content with carefully thought out celebrity recommendation, to scripting and final production, all of it mandated to the in-house content experts within Mindshare ESP.

Two, tactfully seeding the content, where “people” would make it viral. To accelerate this, the Search and Social Media Experts at Mindshare went onto ingeniously seeding the content through contextual search and social media platforms of Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

    Alok Sinha

“The purpose of strategy at Mindshare is very simply to try and turn our brands into currencies of popular culture. Cultural currencies that fuel consumer conversations are far more valuable in today’s wired world than passive opportunities to see. The Sachin anthem is a great example of this belief. The team spotted an existing cultural meme in Dhanush and then went on to leverage it via executional excellence across content production, brand integration and social seeding. The Boost case also highlights the necessity of jugalbandis between strategy and the content & digital technology teams to create meaningful brand led cultural currencies,” said Alok Sinha, Leader Strategy – South Asia at Mindshare.

Leading the mantle, the Mindshare strategy team required not just meticulous, but dynamic planning on a real time basis. By putting the brand’s content in the hands of the consumers it was a calculated risk and a bold strategic stance by the team. But today, Mindshare stands tall as GSK’s proud partners, while history is being written.

    Jayant K Singh

“As a part of our marketing efforts on Boost, this time around, we wanted to celebrate Sachin’s long standing ‘Stamina’ association with the brand. A Sachin anthem, that people would resonate and rise with, was our instinctive choice. While we were certain that Dhanush’s popularity would help accelerate talk ability around Boost, our partner agency Mindshare’s contribution, through a well thought out strategy and execution in making it a “first” on many accounts for GSK, has successfully brought our intent to life,” said Jayant K Singh, Executive Vice President, Marketing, Glaxo Smithkline Consumer Health Care.

Mindshare is a global media and marketing services network with billings in excess of $27.8 billion (source: RECMA). The network consists of 114 offices in 82 countries throughout the North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East, and Asia Pacific, each dedicated to forging competitive marketing advantage for businesses and their brands.

  • The Anchor: 5 Challenges for film & entertainment industry in the digital space

    1. Lack of Infrastructure:

One of the major challenges in digital space is lack of infrastructure and poor internet connectivity. The problem of bandwidth has been there for some time now. We need better streaming solutions and internet penetration inIndia. With 3G, and now 4G, coming on the scene, though the initial rollout has been slow, all plans are geared for boosting rollout and hence consumption of entertainment on digital platforms is expected to get a boost.

    2. Fragmentation in the Industry:

We have a fragmented industry in terms of sheer number of platforms and business models. In present scenario, there is no clear leader except a handful of them who are making profit. But with more investors in the space, we are seeing both, better quality platforms and more sustainable rollouts, which are further fuelling the consumers’ digital consumption habit.

    3. Menace of Piracy:

Piracy is another menace that the industry has been fighting against. Some of the players in digital space, like YouTube for example, have been taking some strong measures to ensure that the legitimate owner of the content gets fair share of the revenue. Additionally, content owners are increasingly partnering with platforms and finding win-win partnership models and working together to build the consumers’ habit of legal content consumption.

    4. Technological Challenge:

Content owner face a lot of challenges to digitize and re-purpose the content. Technologies are getting redundant at a faster pace. It is a challenge for the content owners to cope up with the fast-growing technology and avail their content in compatible format for a particular platform. However, players are emerging with the scale to be able to handle this fragmented consumption and build better and more sustainable revenue streams, and bring all the efficiencies of scale. This also gives opportunities to bring in innovation in the presentation of the product.

    5. Need for better equipments

Another hindrance is slow adoption of newer and better equipment/ end user device to access video content. But, the variety of gadgets available in the market at reasonable price points and loaded features are expected to address the problem.

  • 9 Indians among YouTube Space Mission finalists

    By A Correspondent

YouTube, Lenovo, and Space Adventures in cooperation with space agencies, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), on Wednesday announced the sixty finalists of YouTube Space Lab (youtube.com/spacelab), the global science competition that challenges 14-18 year-olds to design a science experiment that can be performed in space.

YouTube Space Lab received thousands of video submissions from more than 80 countries, a remarkable number given the unique challenge of designing an experiment that could actually be carried out in space – something that has traditionally been the mission of qualified astronauts and scientists. Entrants not only described their science experiment ideas via video, but demonstrated and animated the procedures they were submitting.

TheUS led with 10 finalists, followed byIndia with nine. Rounding out the top five countries in terms of total submissions arePoland,Canada, andSpain.

Starting from January 18 through January 24, the YouTube community will be invited to judge these entries alongside a prestigious panel of judges, including renowned scientist, Professor Stephen Hawking, NASA’s Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s Associate Administrator of Education and former Astronaut Leland Melvin, ESA Astronaut Frank De Winne, JAXA Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and Cirque du Soleil’s founder Guy Laliberté, to determine the winners.

YouTube users and the judging panel will determine 6 regional winners (2 teams from each of the 3 regions) who will travel to Washington, DC, where the global winners (2 teams from each age group) will be announced in March.

“We’re thrilled with the response to YouTube Space Lab,” said Zahaan Bharmal, Google’s Head of Marketing Operations, Europe, Middle East, andAfrica, and the man behind the idea for Space Lab.  “They rose to the challenge – demonstrating great imagination, creativity and passion with their ideas. Our mission was to inspire the next generation and the response shows, we’ve done just that. Today’s Space Lab entrants are tomorrow’s space explorers,” he added.

  • Airtel’s HFZ campaign goes viral

Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications company with operations in 19 countries across Asia and Africa, after the success of its ‘Har Friend Zaroori Hai, Yaar’ (HFZ) campaign, has extended this brand idea with the launch of an all new online viral campaign on its YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/airtel).

Created by Taproot, these 20 videos are inspired by interesting ‘friend types’ or tags created by the online audience on Facebook (www.facebook.com/airtelindia) during an outreach programme which had been initiated by Airtel earlier.

Over the coming weeks, the company will periodically release a total of 20 videos on the web and use the concept of ‘Gamification’ to excite viewers to unlock, access and share them.

An interesting trend that depicts the way the current generation consumes and accesses information, Gamification is an infusion of gaming techniques and unique story telling that makes discovery content more fun and engaging. As part of this Gamification-led initiative by Airtel, everyone keen on watching these videos will need to visit www.youtube.com/airtel and will be provided interesting cues, by responding correctly to which they will be able to ‘unlock’ video levels and gradually move ahead.

Commenting on the launch of the new HFZ viral campaign, Bharat Bambawale, Director – Global Brand, Bharti Airtel, said, “The youthful rendition of Airtel’s ‘Har Friend Zaroori Hai, Yaar’ campaign and its accompanying foot-tapping friendship anthem have resonated well with people of all age groups and backgrounds – much like the brand itself. Given the theme itself, focusing on the discerning online audience was a natural choice for us. With this in mind, Airtel launched an online campaign that encouraged everyone to create unique friend types on Facebook which received 65,000 entries in a span of days. We have now chosen the most interesting friend tags like ‘Status Update fried, Activist Friend, Dhinchak friend’, ‘Filmi Friend’, ‘Chipkoo Friend’ and ‘Proxy Friend’ to create new HFZ online viral videos. These videos will follow the increasingly popular global trend of ‘Gamification’ to encourage viewers to spread the word on these evocative videos that bring alive ways in which friends touch different aspect of our lives.”

Tagging others and sharing these videos on social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Google+ will allow viewers to gather points on the leaderboard. And then finally one can upload their own friend type video in order to win a Nokia Lumia 800 and a trip toIbiza,Spainas the grand prize.

A complete deviation from traditional media strategy, Airtel will release these videos on the web starting January 4.

The original HFZ soundtrack is now also available through new interpretations in laavni, bhangra, hip-hop, folk etc.

  • ‘Silent Anthem’ is among 2011’s top 10 most-watched YouTube videos in India

    By A Correspondent

With an Indian viewership of 1,150,509 and around 1,300 people’s comments, “The Silent National Anthem” video has made it to India’s top 10 most-watched YouTube videos of 2011.

The official Google India Blog recently carried out an analysis to check ‘What were we watching the most in 2011?’ The research spooled back through videos and channels that absorbed collective global attention this year and compiled the list capturing the global view counts of popular videos uploaded throughout 2011.

The research revealed that in India, the top 10 most-watched YouTube videos of 2011 were:

    1. Don 2 – Official Teaser
    2. RA.One – Teaser Trailer
    3. Agneepath Trailer – Official
    4. Singham – Trailer Full HD
    5. Star Light Star Bright – Mother Goose Club Nursery Rhymes
    6. MissionImpossible 4 – Ghost Protocol – Official Trailer
    7. The 7 Trumpets of Revelation | The Day Trumpet 1 Hits Earth
    8. iPhone 5 Concept Features
    9. Bodyguard – Official Trailer HD
    10. The Silent Indian National Anthem

While more than 50 per cent of the list comprises trailers of Bollywood movies (the industry is known for high decibel media spends), The Silent National Anthem acquired an audience largely on account of its brilliant emotional connect.

The premise ‘Patriotism knows no language’ was brought to life through hundreds of special kids with hearing/speech impairments singing the National Anthem in sign language for India’s 61st Republic day.

BIG Cinemas, in association with the Mudra Group, released the video across its cinemas on 26 January, 2011.

  • The Anchor: Vidya Heble picks 10 videos to watch when bored at work (or not)

#1 12 Days of Christmas, Indian style: What, you haven’t seen Boymongoose yet? Watch, and listen. And don’t let your attention wander because there are quirky little details in the video that you’ll miss otherwise.

#2 If You Come Today: Kannada superstar Dr Rajkumar had an unlikely resurgence of fame with this clip from one of his films, now a viral hit popularized with some fine commentary by Time Out and impaled on yonder web to delight us.

#3 MTV Chaiboy: An old spirit-lifting favourite. The boy’s moves are infectious and the soundtrack only helps in spades.

#4 Sony Handycam: At first view this may be bugging because of the mess the kids create, but the nonsense ditty is indubitably catchy.

#5 Iron Eagle Nominee: “Let’s say you’re a defense-company marketing executive. And you want to make a splash at the Indian defense ministry’s annual air show. Do you: (a) buy expensive gifts for New Delhi’s generals; (b) treat the press to Kingfishers and samosas; (c) produce a Bollywood-esque video featuring bare-midriff girls, flower-draped missiles, and the catchphrase ‘dinga dinga dee’? Unfortunately for us, Israeli arms-maker Rafael chose C.” Nuff said. PS: It’s horrible.

#6 ‘The Force’ Volkswagen Commercial: Admit it, Darth Vader is there only to win over the grownups (who pay for the car). But the small boy’s acting – while entirely inside the eerie black costume, hence no cutesy facial expressions – is magnificent.

#7 Achmed the Dead Terrorist: Leave your sensibilities at the door. Jeff Dunham uses the skeletal suicide bomber to poke fun at everyone (including himself), and you will laugh.

#8 ‘Tera Husn Bahut Mujhe Bhaata Hai’Peugeot: Just for the end, which will have you rocking along with the triumphant guys who remodel an old beat-up jalopy into a Peugeot 206 lookalike.

#9 The Last Knit: Did someone say “obsessive compulsive”? Perversely fascinating, animated, and sans dialogue so you can share it with your international colleagues.

#10 In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones: Yes, you heard right. And yes, you’ll need more than a post-lunch slump to take this one in. For those who came in late – it’s Shahrukh Khan’s gangly-teenager phase, and please take a number for your initiation rite.
