  • Meet the IAA Awardwinners-6: Arun Srinivas

Arun Srinivas, vice president, skincare and make-up, HUL, was awarded Marketer of the year: Personal Care at the IAA Leadership Awards held last week. Here he spoke with RITU MIDHA minutes after receiving the award from I&B Minister Manish Tewari

What would you say is key to HUL’s marketing excellence?

At HUL it is always consumer first – and that has resulted in in them being with us for decades and more.

This award is a testimony of effort that people have put in across the teams – and is a motivation for us to sustain performances like this.

Do you see the growth for personal care products coming from rural areas or urban ones?

Penetration of personal care categories in rural areas and small markets would be on the rise as they become more and more affluent. Equally there is opportunity in larger cities and metros because our per capita consumption in many of these categories is still very low compared to even other developing nations.

There is a real task of building relevance for these categories, more so in smaller towns and rural areas – and that would bring in growth.

What would be a bigger growth possibility for HUL – market expansion or eating into competition’ share?

In personal care it is still about growing the market, and widening the market size – and depth in terms of rural access etc.

  • Magazines have to be on the medium where consumers thrive: Peter Kreisky

Peter Kreisky, founder of Kreisky Media was one of the international speakers at the Indian Magazine Congress 2013 who shared his observations on the changing market dynamics surrounding the domain of print.

On the sidelines of the event, Kreisky told MxMIndia on how digital would be the way forward for the magazine industry and the importance that a growing market like India holds for the print landscape around the world. Excerpts:

As one moves across multiple markets where print plays a dominant role, what is the kind of change you see in the way the business is now run?

Markets across the Europe, Asia, South America etc are in different stages of development, literacy and penetration of print and digital media. One of the things that’s universal across these markets is the advent of very sophisticated mobile screen-based devices. It’s something that the younger generation is relying on almost exclusively for their news, information and entertainment. And if that is where they are then the magazine media has to move there to tap them or else they won’t be able to capture eyeballs or ad dollars.

Are magazines taking to the digital medium in a manner befitting the business? What’s the trend being observed there?

The trend is a universal trend which is far more choices for consumers to spend time on the medium and more choices for advertisers to spend their money around. This is a trend that’s ongoing in most markets but the impact is far more dramatic in the mature markets than the developing markets because the investments in developed markets are less and you have less to lose.

With pricing and infrastructural bottlenecks, do you think the jump by magazine players in India on to the digital medium is still in a nascent phase?

Every country is at a different stage where pricing of their digital product is concerned. One of the things we saw in India is that in the telecom industry the number of subscribers has leapfrogged by a huge number. Most people did not have landlines until recently but they have bypassed that need and now have mobiles in their possession. Also, in the area of education there is quite some effort being made in making the syllabus available online for illiterate children in remote and rural areas in countries like Ethiopia, Somalia etc. That again is something that’s leapfrogging a generation where they are resorting to using the tablets and not a PC.

How are advertisers reacting to the shift from traditional to digital medium where magazines are concerned?

The advertisers were very reluctant initially to advertise on the web but now they are aware of the scale and proof that consumers are actually looking at their ads and acting on them – facilitated by Google, Yahoo etc. Even ads on mobile has picked up in a big way in markets like the US, Europe etc. This is seeing a drastic change as advertisers have started seeing worth in the digital offering as well. It is also the task of ad agencies to create work that is appreciated and works effectively for the brands as well.

  • Mindshare India flag flies high at FOMA

    By A Correspondent

Ever since he took charge in late 2011, Mindshare India boss Ravi Rao has been living out of his suitcase and smartphones. The back-to-back meeting with clients and pitches leaves him little time for much else. While we don’t think these cruel hours at work are healthy, the hard work is paying off. Mr Rao is delighted by the “good, all-round show – right from the effectiveness award for Slice, Pepsico to HUL winning on the back of strong entries”.

The competition was indeed tough, including that coming from within the Group M stable. At the Festival of Media Asia, the premier destination for media agencies and professionals, Mindshare was the Network of the Year.

Other than Mindshare, the top honours went to Million Reasons to Believe in Thailand (Campaign of the Year) submitted by Initiative Thailand for Coca-Cola, OMD Hong Kong (Agency of the Year). The winners in these categories were determined by a points system based on entries appearing in the shortlist and the list of highly commended and winning entries.

Winners were selected from a shortlist of 117 campaigns, presented to an expert panel of 27 industry judges, led by Leonardo O’Grady, ASEAN Integrated Marketing and Communications Director, Coca-Cola. The gruelling two-day judging process saw much deliberation and debate, resulting in the final list of winners.

The 2013 Festival of Media Asia Awards were presented at a gala event at the Sentosa Cove in Singapore last night (March 5). Awards were presented to winners vying across 15 open categories, with an additional three grand prix awards. There were over 400 submissions from over 10 markets across the region.

“We held every entry to the highest standard,” said Leonardo O’Grady, ASEAN Integrated Marketing and Communications Director, Coca-Cola. “We had to make some difficult decisions. Many of the entries were of such a high quality that we struggled to find a clear winner, and one of the things that emerged was that the lines between content and communication have become blurred.”

Mr O’Grady continued, “The Best Communications and Mobile categories were hotly contested and we have also seen some great wins from Thailand, Australia and India.”

“Each and every one of these winners deserves the recognition they have received from the jury.” said Charlie Crowe, Founder of the Festival and CEO of C-Squared, the organizers of the event. “We have seen some exemplary campaigns that have been able to change minds and move people. They represent the best work coming out of Asia, and demonstrate the sheer creative energy and calibre of the industry in this region.”

The Awards ceremony was the grand finale for the three-day Festival of Media Asia 2013, held in Singapore for the second time. This year’s event brought together over 600 influential delegates and over 40 speakers from across Asia and the globe.

The Festival included case studies, panel discussions, and presentations focused around the theme of Mobility. The Festival’s day programme ended with M.A.P, a speed round of presentations from innovative companies looking to be named Hot Company of the Year (according to audience votes) which saw Future Ad Labs emerging on top, as well as the Rising Star Award for promising young talent which went to Stella Su (Yen-Wen Su) from Starcom Taiwan.

    Ravi Rao

As for Ravi Rao, he’s sitting back, delighted. At the shortlists revealed for the Media Abby at Goafest, his agency leads with 20 shortlists. Back to the FOMA wins, he told MxMIndia: “I am extremely proud of the teams including those that made it and got shortlisted.” And what’s next: “Another year and now Goafest beckons.” Well said.

The full list of Festival of Media Asia Award winners is available online at www.festivalofmedia.com/asia/awards.

11 superjury members in their wisdom have let India down. There were complaints of plagiarism after people got to see the award-winning metals. Note, the works couldn’t be viewed after the shortlists were declared, and hence complaints could be lodged after the awards were handed out. The superjury – comprising chairpersons of individual juries – have junked the charges saying the awarding process cannot be questioned. The Awards Governing Council has said that since the awards belong to the creative frat, their word is final. Well. One wonders what clients have to say. One wonders what the rest of the international fraternity has to say. As for us, we have just three words: Sad. Shameful. Shameless.

Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan conferred the RedInk Life Time Achievement Awards upon veteran journalists  Kuldip Nayar and N Ram. The award for Mr Nayar was received by his wife Bharti Nayyar. Broadcaster Star India won the RedInk Awards for Excellence in Journalism for its issue-based reality show ‘Satyamev Jayate‘.

Manish Tewari, Union minister for Information and Broadcasting was the guest of honour for the event. The scintillating awards evening regaled the 600-plus audience with an inward looking debate on the profession of journalism, titled ‘Keeping Media Free & Fair’ hosted by Times Now Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, with media veterans N Ram and Uday Shankar (the Star India CEO was a former journalist) and Mr Tewari.

During this occasion, Manish Tewari called for a robust self regulation regime for media organisations in the country.  “Content regulation in the media space is not going to come out of political executive, but will come out of the judicial process. Make self-regulation more inclusive and robust to keep out judicial intervention.”  “With exponential growth in the media space, a paradigm shift has taken place, wherein regulations have to keep pace with changing technologies and have to be universal,” Mr Tewari said.

Mr Sankaranarayanan had the audience in splits as he spoke beyond his prepared speech. “During the last few years, the media has brought out scores of cases of corruption and wrongdoings by public servants and officials.
