  • Sweet win for O&M at IPA Effectiveness Awards

    By A Correspondent

Ogilvy & Mather Advertising, Mumbai, became the first Indian agency to win Gold at the IPA Effectiveness Awards in London. The award was won for Cadbury Dairy Milk’s 7-year-long ‘Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye’ campaign in India. Launched in 2005, this campaign has led to Cadbury Dairy Milk increasing its business manifold, and has also contributed to increased revenues and profits for the company, Cadbury India Limited. This case also won a special award for ‘Best Use of Insight’.

The IPA, organiser of the IPA Effectiveness Awards, is the professional body for advertising, media and marketing communication agencies in the United Kingdom. Since their launch in the UK in 1980, the IPA Effectiveness Awards are recognized by agencies and clients as the industry’s most rigorous award scheme, because entrants have to prove their communications strategies have worked in hard business terms.

The rigorous judging process includes each entry being judged by two panels before it is considered worthy of an award – an industry panel and a client panel. The Industry panel decides the shortlist (by making sure that each shortlisted paper fulfils the requirement of clearly demonstrating a return on marketing investment). The Client panel then attributes each shortlisted paper a Gold, Silver or Bronze Award and allocates the special prizes.

The year 2012 has seen a total of 65 entries for the awards of which 35 entries made it to the shortlist. Ogilvy’s winning entry was India’s only shortlisted entry at the awards.

Piyush Pandey, Executive Chairman & Creative Director, Ogilvy & Mather South Asia, and also the brain behind the ‘Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye’ campaign, said, “I am totally delighted that we have won India’s first ever Gold at one of the most rigorous effectiveness awards in the world – the IPA. And that too for Cadbury. As I have always said in the past, great work comes out of great partnerships. A big salute to you, Cadbury India. And heartiest, heartiest congratulations to my young colleagues at Ogilvy & Mather, Mumbai.”

Chandramouli Venkatesan, Director, India Snacking & AP Developing Markets – Chocolate Lead, said, “It is a matter of great pride that Cadbury Dairy Milk is the first ever gold winner from India. It is a testimony to the exceptional advertising the brand has done over a long time. Special kudos to our partners Ogilvy India for being such an outstanding brand steward.”

Kawal Shoor, Head of Planning for Ogilvy Advertising Mumbai, and also co-author of the entry, was present at the gala ceremony held at the London Hilton Park Lane Hotel. Beaming with joy, he said, “This is unprecedented. Only time will tell what this means for us, and Indian advertising, but right now we’re over the moon. We have always loved and stood by our work, and knew it was world class, but to now get acknowledged as that, by arguably the most renowned and sceptical set of judges, ahead of other strong campaigns from around the world… across categories… Wow! And then to win another one for insights… perfect!”

Navin Talreja, Head of Ogilvy & Mather – Mumbai, had said, “This is absolutely fantastic! We strongly believe that our wins happen only because of the faith that clients show in us, and are invariably a result of a process of co-creation with clients. Cadbury has been one such relationship that we have enjoyed for over 60 years.”

  • It’s Ogilvy all the way at Effie 2012

    By Ritu Midha

As an event, one couldn’t have thought of a better way to spend a Tuesday evening than sampling the soothing breeze and top-notch refreshments at the Turf Club, Mumbai. Of course, the event was the Effie 2012, so the focus was necessarily on the awards.

    Piyush Pandey

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the show was stolen by Ogilvy and Mather, who came ahead by miles, with the Man of the Moment being its executive chairman and creative director, South Asia Piyush Pandey once again. Ogilvy and Mather, with 280 points (more than 400 percent over its closest rival) was declared Effie Agency of the Year. When it came to clients, the competition was stiffer, although both Cadbury India Ltd (Effie Client of the Year) and No 2, Star India Pvt Ltd, are O&M clients.

An emotionally charged Piyush Pandey said, “It is all by God’s grace. The credit completely goes to our team and culture. New blood joins with its own creative thinking and seamlessly blends with the existing creative thought process.” On being a repeat winner, he said, “It feels ecstatic to be winning again and again. To tell you the truth – the joy and thrill of winning increases every year.”

    Shashi Sinha

The Effies themselves were enhanced in stature this year, both in participation and jury process. Advertising Club President Shashi Sinha stated, “It is special for two reasons: it is the first Effie under the aegis of the Ad Club post it becoming the Ad Club of India.” Also, he said, “This year the entire judging process has been conducted online – and the credit goes to Bipin Pandit and his team for managing it smoothly, considering that there were more than 100 jury members this year.”

This year, the number of entries increased to 357. And while last year 29 agencies had participated – this year the number reached 50. Another feather in the Effie cap is that 50 percent of the jury members represented clients – best placed to judge the effectiveness of a campaign.

    Ajay Kakar

Emphasizing the way the Effie is growing, Chairperson of the Organising Committee Ajay Kakar said, “This year, judging moved beyond Mumbai, and was extended to Delhi. We have also introduced two new categories – Direct Marketing and Ongoing Campaign.” He added, “It is a matter of pride that it is not a small set of agencies winning an Effie tonight; 13 agencies have contributed to the winning entries.”

    Ravi Rao

Another point worth mentioning is the fact of a media agency winning two Effie trophies this year. Mindshare took away two bronzes – and considers it just the right beginning. Mindshare’s Leader, South Asia Ravi Rao told MxMIndia, “We bagged three bronzes, two for Axe Shower Gel and one for HSBC. I am really glad that we made it to the Effies. We will strive harder next time around.”

  • Media & marketing captains shine at IAA Leadership Awards

    By A Correspondent

ITC CEO Yogi Deveshwar, Madison World CEO Sam Balsara and Ogilvy & Mather CEO Piyush Pandey were amongst the award-winners at the Colors International Advertising Association Leadership Awards held in Mumbai on Saturday. Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari was chief guest of the evening. Pradeep Guha, former IAA president, who has been CEO, Zee Entertainment and President, Bennett Coleman and Company Ltd and is currently the Managing Director of 9X Media, was admitted to the association’s Hall of Fame with the lifetime achievement award.

Professional responsibility is key: Pradeep Guha

    Pradeep Guha

I am honoured to have received this award. I have worked more than 30 years in the Media profession encompassing print, television and now the internet…I have travelled a long distance and whenever possible I have contributed a lot to the industry because I believe you cannot be just taking things from the industry but you have to return it back as well. If people talk about CSR in the corporate space then one should focus on professional responsibility as well. That’s what I have been doing in my career.

The award is a very good initiative and I am glad that they made it on such a large scale in the first year itself. Typically, when something starts big it tends to grow bigger.

My advice to the industry, especially the younger generation is try and be the best in the world. Not just best among your friends or in the industry or in India; but the best in the world. When I was in the Times of India I used to look up to New York Times and say: I want to be bigger than NY Times. Unless you benchmark something very large and almost unachievable then there’s nowhere to go.

The International Advertising Association (IAA) is the world’s only globally-focused integrated advertising trade association with membership representing advertisers, agencies and the media. Research major The Nielsen Company and consulting firm Ernst & Young were associated with the event that was organised and sponsored by the Colors general entertainment channel.

Popular television artist Mini Mathur emceed the evening as the fraternity was welcomed by IAA’s India chapter president Srinivasan K Swamy and Colors CEO Raj Nayak. In his address, the I&B minister asked the industry to mull over pressing issues like ad duration in channels, effective viewership measurement, adding that the government will not institute any regulations without consulting the industry. “As an industry, advertising has done generally well for itself and it has been one of the beneficiaries of liberalisation and has bloomed well over the years,” Mr Tewari said. “What needs to be kept in mind going forward is that the limit of statutory regulation should be respected because when we respect the law and maintain equilibrium, maintain harmony between creativity, provocation and restrain are we able to get the best and give the best.”

Also amongst the winners was Bollywood actor Salman Khan who reportedly made his first ever appearance at an awards function. The actor, on a high with brands queuing to sign him, bagged the award for the Brand Endorser of the Year – Male. Katrina Kaif was awarded Brand Endorser of the Year – Female.

Marketers from across 12 categories were among the awardwinners as also were Editor of the Year (Jaideep Bose) and News Anchor of the Year (Rajdeep Sardesai). Shobhana Bhartia, chairperson of  HT Media, was awarded the Mediaperson of the Year award. The table alongside has the list of winners.

  • Meet the IAA Awardwinners-4 | Anuradha Agarwal

Anuradha Agarwal, Senior VP, Brand Communications, Insights & Online at Vodafone India was adjudged the Telecom Marketer of the Year at the IAA Leadership Awards held last Saturday. Excerpts from a quick chat with MxMIndia’s Ritu Midha

What is the key to marketing success?

For service sector, more so in telecom – it is consumer engagement and satisfaction. We have an excellent team and partners – people have really liked our services and communication, and it sure has helped in connecting with consumers.

We really do whatever it takes to keep the customer happy – be it the quality of network, quality of services or quality of customer care.

As an outsider, what one largely notices is advertising – what else constitutes effective marketing for a telecom brand?

Advertising is just the tip of the iceberg. A large number of things go in marketing of a telecom brand. We have 150 million customers – and not all of them can be reached through advertising – advertising is more of a brand building activity.

We do segmented offers, targeted and point of-sale activities, new offers, new tariff plans, specialised offers – depending on where the consumers are located – what their requirements and needs are. We even strive to fulfil consumers’ unfulfilled needs – for instance mobile internet. Key here was to provide it in such a way that even consumers from a not very evolved educated world can take advantage of them.

Do you believe mobile Internet in country has a large scope?

Our belief is that in near future, the Internet revolution in the country would be led by mobile. A number of people in our country, unlike the Western world, experience Internet on the mobile first. We need to be ready as an organisation and as an industry that consumer needs are met in terms of discovering content and services.

Would you say the same is true of rural markets as well? Would language not be a barrier there?

It is true of every customer everywhere who can actually get on to the Internet and watch a little video, listen to the music or get some information.

If Gangnam style can be successful across the world it clearly tells you that Internet has no language barrier. There is a lot of audio visual content that goes on – and it would make sure that language is no barrier.

How important is the role that digital marketing plays in your strategy?

We always believe that we must go where the customers are. As a company, we have used digital extensively in the last few years – and as more and more consumers move to the Net – we would be there to interact with them. We have always been doing things to engage customers on the Internet rather than informing them because it is a different medium, and needs to be treated differently.

Coming back to mobile consumption, do you think there is still a need for educating consumers?

There are different kinds of customers. It is the classic adaptation curve – some people are ahead of the curve and some people are still catching up. There are new technologies of phones, and devices – and people are coming to terms with what a phone can do. It may be education of a different kind – maybe not the basic education but about the possibilities – and what is the next big thing.

  • Meet the IAA Awardwinners-5: Chandramouli Venkatesan

Chandramouli Venkatesan, Executive director Chocolates & Biscuits, Cadbury India was awarded Marketer of the year: FMCG – Food & Beverages at the IAA Leadership Awards last week. He spoke with RITU MIDHA soon after receiving the award.

What would you attribute this award to?

When you put in effort, you do not do it for awards. However, when you win the awards – the recognition definitely makes you feel good.

As for this award specially, It is an honour to get this award – as you are nominated and awarded by very competent peer group. Cadbury is an excellent brand to work for – which is much liked by the consumers. We have an excellent time and partners – and together we are quite effective.

You have worked with smaller or younger brands earlier – how does your experience in Cadbury differ from them?

It ultimately boils down to the task – there are different kinds of tasks.  While in some cases, you are fighting competitive challenge, in others you are working towards growing the category in the country. For instance, in case of chocolates – though it is a very strong market, one still needs to grow the market. Nature of challenge varies – but all jobs are challenging. I do not think there is any easy job there.

You are speaking of category expansion – to what extent is it possible to expand the market?

Per capita consumption in India is 110 grams, in developed world it is 10 kilgrams – so we are 100th per capita of developed world – so there is a very very long way to go – and opportunities are immense. Hence, as market leaders our focus continues to be expansion of the category.

What would be the key growth segment for Cadburys?

Our focus is three tiered. There are opportunities in all segments – be it rural, urban or upper end market.

Do you see rural consumer contributing here?

Rural is actually very strong. Overall economic development and information and awareness explosion – thanks to media penetration is very strong, has led to rural consumer demanding and consuming better quality products.
