  • Olive Crown Awards: Times of India is ‘Green Brand of the Year’

The India Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA) hosted the 14th edition of its annual property, the Olive Crown Awards 2024. The awards acknowledged the remarkable work of those individuals and corporates who drove the message of sustainability or ‘green advertising’. We missed attending it, but are publishing this basis a communique we received.

The awards saw a senior jury appraising the entries: Anupama Ramaswamy (Chief Creative Officer, Havas Worldwide India), K V Sridhar (Global Chief Creative Officer Nihilent Limited & Hypercollective), Pateek Bharadwaj (Chief Creative Officer, Lowe Lintas India), Tista Sen (Creative Brand Consultant) , Carlton D’Silva (Co-Founder, Musemakers & House of Awe) & Mukund Olety (Chief Creative Office, VML) shortlisted the winners through a rigorous process.

Said Avinash Pandey, President IAA India Chapter: “I believe these awards are not just unique but also very special. Unique because they are a symbol of intra-industry collaboration. Even though this is an IAA India Chapter property, it was launched 14 years ago at the Goafest which is jointly run by the Advertising Club and the Advertising Agencies Association of India. Even now, it is associated with the Asian Federation of Advertising Associations, thereby being the only property with a real reach in both the Eastern and the Western parts of the world. Special, because these awards symbolize the commitment of the Marcom industry to be not just guardians of their respective brands, but also guardians of Brand Earth.”

Added Janak Sarda, Chairperson, IAA Olive Crown Awards: “Any awards are only as good as the jury that judges them. So let me begin by thanking our jury members who were a real asset to us. Our event could never have been held without the help of our supporters. Some have supported us for the second and third time. This clearly marks them as loyal supporters of the environment. And then I would like to thank those who have sent in their entries from all over the world. Their active participation shows that the marcom industry is indeed populated with people who believe that what’s good is also good for business. Finally, I would like to thank each and everyone who is here today. All true friends of the environment. Planet Earth needs you.”

Says Megha Tata, President IAA: “The Olive Crown Awards are 12 years old. They have been hailed and accepted as the gold standard in an area where sustainability and creativity converge. The IAA has decided to extend the Olive Crown brand and take up urgent issues relevant to the environment. I am happy that the Asian Federation of Advertising Associations (AFAA) is also on board with us in amplifying this important message.”

Added Srinivasan Swamy, Chairman AFAA: “This is a little known but huge global problem. Top soil erosion and the depressed food production arising out of that, concerns us all. I am sure AFAA members will step up and send good entries for this issue as well.”

Said Pradeep Dwivedi, Chairperson Olive Crown Committee: “We are reaching out to our creative community and appealing to them to create a truly effective campaign that will be judged by an elite jury. The winning entry will be awarded on our Olive Crown awards night and will also be run across pan-Asian media. But we need to find this balance and co-exist every single day! And some of the campaigns we have seen this year, have presented this balance beautifully”.

Added Neeraj Roy, Chairperson IAA Olive Crown Awards and Founder & CEO, Hungama Digital Media Entertainment:  “Over the next two decades, your entire customer base and your teams  – the talent you are hoping to attract will largely be millennials and Gen Z and we know that they rate a brand’s ethics and sustainability higher than ever before so it will be impossible and impractical to ignore these trends. Brands, media, advertisers, agencies and marketers, essentially the core of the IAA community, have always played a key role in communication for centuries and it is encouraging to note that brands here in India too are taking note and actions toward sustainability and a greener planet in their product offerings.”

  • Entries open for IAA Olive Crown Awards

    By A Correspondent

The International Advertising Association (IAA) has invited entries for the 10th Annual Olive Crown Awards.

Said Punit Goenka, President India Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA): “These awards are very meaningful. They bring the environment on top of the creative agenda for marketers and advertising agencies. They are also unique. In its tenth year now, the Olive Crown are the only awards of their kind in the region. Finally, it is a great example of a global body IAA working together with an Asian industry association, the Asian Federation of Advertising Associations (AFAA) to further a good cause.”

Added Olive Crown Awards Committee Chairperson Megha Tata: “The Olive Crown awards need no introduction to the marketing and advertising community. They are the first and only awards that salute creativity in communication sustainability. This year we have added a few new categories, one for international advertising, which is essentially advertising created and run in Asia, outside India. AFAA have been a part of these awards for a long time and hence this category. There is also a new category for work done by an NGO in the green space. And finally there is an award for New Age Green Initiatives working in the space to reduce, minimise or manage whatever could be harmful to the environment. Keeping in mind the importance of the environment we are anticipating a very good response. And keeping in mind the green nature of this subject, no forms will be mailed out in any physical form.”

Nine years ago, the India chapter of the International Advertising Association instituted the Olive Crown Awards for awarding created in sustainability and saving the environment as a whole.

It was held as part of the Goafest 2011 edition, but went its independent way the following year. And hasn’t looked back ever since.

From sub-hundred-odd entries in the days of yore to some 230 this year speaks a lot about how much the industry respects the awards. The entries were vying for metals across 14 categories.

Wunderman Thompson (eka J Walter Thompson) and The Social Street bagged four golds, with the former winning the Gold in Campaign of the Year, and the latter, the Silver.

Yes Bank was awarded the ‘Green Brand of the year’ for its Yes Bank Natural Capital Awards and Conservation as the Mathrubhumi group was awarded the coveted ‘Corporate Social Crusader of the Year’ award for its various social initiatives.
