  • Sambad CEO Conclave 2024 ends on a high note

    Sambad Group, the largest media house in Odisha, organised the third edition of Sambad CEO Conclave 2024 in Bhubaneswar last week. The theme was ‘Sustainability Practices in Industry’. In attendance: captains from corporates, advertising and media.

    The Chief Guest was Odisha’s newly minted Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo who focused on Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) aspects and opined that the corporate sector should maintain a fine balance between these three factors for sustainable development. “Our government is committed that the people of Odisha will take their own decisions regarding issues related to the environment and natural resources. This is one aspect of the Odia Asmita (self-identity),” he said. Cabinet Minister Suresh Pujari also spoke at the event.

    Speaking on the occasion, Avinash Pandey, CEO ABP Network; President, News Broadcasters and Digital Association and President IAA (India Chapter) said:  “Television viewership is larger than internet viewership in India. If we raise issues related to environment and sustainable development in television, they can reach the common masses,” adding: “We all should focus on 5 Ps—People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership—to achieve sustainable growth.”

    Said Madison World Chairman Sam Balsara: “May people from the lower strata are now moving towards the middleclass bracket. This is the first sign of development. Now, we have better infrastructure including road and airport. More and more job avenues are opening up to our youths. Small players in various sectors are now doing well. Our country has recorded the largest digital transactions in the world. Engineers from India are now managing the day-to-day operations of many corporate giants including the Google,” he pointed out.

    Added Srinivasan K. Swamy, CMD, RK Swamy Ltd; Chairman, Asian Federation of Advertising Associations and Chairman Audit Bureau of Circulations: “We all should adhere to the principle of 3 Rs—reuse, repair and recycle—to save our planet. We should conserve water and electricity and use eco-friendly products to protect our environment. The use of plastic should be brought to the minimum level. I hope that the government will introduce chapters on climate change and sustainable growth in the curricula for our students.”

    On the occasion, Pradeep Dwivedi, Group CEO-Eros Media World, gave a presentation on ‘Emerging trends in global media business-Technology driving tectonic shifts’. “The media and entertainment sector can develop their contents, editing and marketing aspects by utilizing AI and other advanced tools like Blockchain, Web3 and Tokenization,” he said.

    Ashwin Padmanabhan, President-Investments, Trading & Partnerships, Group M India, gave a brief presentation on ‘Leveraging influencers and branded content to drive engagement and consideration’. “Around 46 crore people in India are now using social media. The volume of influencer marketing in India has already reached Rs 1,275 crore and it is likely to go up further to Rs 2,800 crore by 2026,” he stated.

    Bharat Avalani, Founder & CEO, Connecting the Dots Consultancy, Malaysia; Secretary General of Asian Federation of Advertising Associations; Global Vice-President, IAA, gave a presentation on ‘Business leaders as storytellers’“Business leaders can give proper orientation to their employees through storytelling. The practice will reduce the mental pressure of the employees and raise overall productivity,” said Avalani.

    Abhishek Karnani, President, the Free Press Journal Group; Ramesh Narayan, Director Strategy, Asian Federation of Advertising Associations and Rani Reddy of Sakshi Media Group also spoke at the conclave.

    IAA governing body members—Ramesh Narayan, Avinash Pandey, Srinivasan K. Swamy, Sam Balsara, Abhishek Karnani and Pradeep Dwivedi—were felicitated at the event. The Sambad Group felicitated five ‘best’ advertisers—Khimji Jewellers, Lalchnd Jewellers, TPCODL, Chandi Bhandar and Freedom Oil—on the occasion.

    Similarly, ‘best’ 11 advertising agencies—Fast Communication, Xpose Advertising, Display Line, Anita Advertisers, Star Advertising, Herald Advertising, Sanket Communications, Annapurna Advertising, NextGen Advertising, P&A Advertising Agency and Tarini Advertising Agency—received felicitations at the conclave.

    Earlier Sambad and Kanak News Editor Tanaya Patnaik delivered the inaugural address, and later Sambad Group Managing Director Monica Nayyar Patnaik delivered the concluding address.

    “The Sambad Group has been organising the CEO conclave for the last three years to deliberate on various issues. The first conclave in 2022 had deliberated on the post-pandemic scenario. The second conclave in 2023 delved into the emerging challenges before the corporate sector. The third conclave focused on sustainability practices in industry,” Monica Nayyar Patnaik said. Tanaya Patnaik set the context for the Conclave on by talking of climate change and its impact on our daily life. “In this summer, a few places in Odisha including Bhubaneswar and Baripada recorded maximum temperatures above 45 Degree Celsius. They were among the hottest places in the world. This is very alarming,” she said.

  • Day 2 @ Goafest: First Half Wrap-Up

    Day 2 of Goafest 2024 began began with a session hosted by the India chapter of IAA in collaboration with UNICEF. The theme was titled Gender-Sensitive Marketing: Navigating The New Consumer Landscape. Among the panellists were Chandni Shah, Chief Operating Officer of FCB Kinnect, Darshana Shah, Head of Marketing & Customer Experience at Aditya Birla Capital, Kailashnath Adhikari, Business Head of Sri Adhikari Brothers & Managing Director of GovernanceNow, Rajdeepak Das, Chief Creative Officer of Publicis Groupe South Asia & Chairman of Leo Burnett South Asia; and Ram Madhvani, Filmmaker, Producer, and Founder of Equinox Films and Ram Madhvani Films. Moderating the discussion was Kranti Gada, Founder of NeOwn.in.

    Post that, in a keynote address, Pulkit Trivedi, Managing Director of Snap Inc. India, revealed how Snapchat emerged as the preferred platform for young India. This was following by a session titled titled Media Agencies Panel – The Changing Expectations from a Media Client Leader, and the Challenges in Getting There, comprising prominent industry leaders. The panellists included Ajay Gupte, CEO, Wavemaker South Asia, Anita Kotwani, CEO – Media (South Asia) at Dentsu, Tanmay Mohanty, CEO of Publicis Media Services India and Vaishali Verma, CEO of Initiative India. Steering the discussion was Vikram Sakuja, Partner & Group CEO of Media & Out-of-Home at Madison Communications.

    The third knowledge seminar was titled, Trust or Bust: Thriving in the Digital World, with ASCI as partner. The panel of experts included were Amit Doshi, Chief Marketing Officer at Britannia, Falguni Vasavada, Professor at MICA and Digital Creator, Paras Sharma, Director of Global Partnerships at Meta and Sharan Hegde, Finance Content Creator and Co-founder and CEO of 1% Club. Manisha Kapoor, CEO & Secretary General of ASCI, moderated the session. We thought the session could be a tad longer.

    What followed was a fireside chat featuring Ankit Kapoor, Head of Marketing & International Business at Parle Agro, Mahesh Shetty, National Sales Head at Viacom18 and Navin Khemka, CEO – South Asia of Essence Mediacom. Conducting the conversation was anchor and marathoner Shibani Gharat.

    Day 2 also saw a series øf masterclasses. By WhatsApp on Agency Exclusive: Drive growth across the customer journey with WhatsApp, presented by Riddhika Sand. Then Ujaya Shakya, Founder and CEO of Outreach Nepal on Unlocking Market Potential: Open your eyes to Nepal. There was also the the D&AD masterclass presented by Lisa Evans and Paul Drake titled Unlocking Award Winning Ideas. Amazon miniTV also held a masterclass on Brand Integration with Vijay Iyer, Director, Amazon Ads India and Amogh Dusad, Head of Content, Amazon miniTV conducting the session. There was also a masterclass on Hall of Flame – The Olympics Masterclass presented by Chandan Roy.

    At the 45th IAA World Congress held in Penang, Malaysia, Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak presented veteran industryperson Srinivasan Swamy with IAA’s most coveted IAA Golden Compass Award. The award honours legends who have significantly contributed to the world stage in the field of marketing, advertising and media industries. This is the first time that this award is being bestowed upon an Indian industry leader. Earlier recipients of this Award include Shelly Lazarus (Chairman Emeritus, Ogilvy and Mather), Paul Polman (CEO, Unilever), Paul Rossi (President, Economist Group), Marc Pritchard (Chief Brand Officer, Procter & Gamble), Andrew Robertson (President & CEO, BBDO Worldwide), etc.

    Srinivasan ‘Sundar’ Swamy, is Chairman & Managing Director of R K Swamy, the only recently listed integrated marketing services company. He currently holds the position of Chairman for The Asian Federation of Advertising Associations (AFAA) and The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC).

    Acknowledging the award received, Swamy said: “I am happy to receive this most coveted award on behalf of all the professionals in my company as well as the industry who have supported me at work and in my various initiatives over the years. I want to dedicate this award to my father, the late Mr. R.K.Swamy, who once said to me that no amount of time given to the industry is wasted time, since that is the hand that feeds us!”

    Added advertising veteran Ramesh Narayan, who has worked with Swamy for several years on various industry projects: “Sundar is a leader on steroids. His ability to set tall targets and get things done when the odds are stacked against him is inspiring. His leadership style is inclusive, but he will not brook any slackness from his teammates. It amazes me that he finds quality time for everything despite running a large diverse business. I wish him continued good health and energy as his group embarks on a new journey as a publicly listed entity.”

  • IAA to open doors to the Meta office

    The Indian Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA), has announced its next event for its Young Professionals (YP). On February 16, IAA’s Young Professionals will get a chance to visit the Meta office and interact with professionals from the social media giant.

    During this three-hour event, Meta professionals will discuss trends that they see in advertising in 2024, the best practices for advertisers using it, and also possible career options with them. Post the presentations, the Meta team will engage with the attendees during high tea.

  • IAA and AFAA announce 14th Olive Crown Awards

    The India Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA) along with the Asian Federation of Advertising Associations (AFAA) announced the 14th edition of the widely acclaimed Olive Crown Awards.

  • IAA 45th World Congress in Penang from March 6 to 8

    The International Advertising Association (IAA) has unveiled the forthcoming 45th IAA World Congress, to be held in Penang, Malaysia, from March 6 to 8, 2024.

     

    Said John Chacko, President, IAA Malaysia and Chairman of the 45th IAA World Congress, Penang: “The convergence of social, economic and climate issues, along with rapid technological advancements has created a new reality for businesses to navigate.   • IAA holds second edition of the Voice of Change summit

    The International Advertising Association (IAA) India Chapter, held the second edition of the Voice of Change summit: ‘Gender Portrayal from 30 seconds to 3 Hours’ last Thursday (November 9).

     

    After introductions and elucidation of the mission statements by Megha Tata, Co-Chair, IAA Women Empowerment Committee and Immediate Past President, IAA India Chapter, and Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Chairperson, IAA Women Empowerment Committee, there was an address by Cynthia McCaffrey from the Unicef “Gender inequalities in children’s lives and in the lives of those who care for them, hinder their growth, development, learning and eventually in reaching their full potential. Statistically, the lack of parity impacts girls and women the most but also disadvantages men and boys,” she said, adding: “Children observe and learn social cues from many forms of content including advertising and it plays a powerful role in shifting perceptions on gender roles. UNICEF is delighted to be the knowledge partner with IAA and its members on this very important journey to promote positive gender roles and practices through advertising, so every young person can live a life free from stereotypes and achieve their full potential”.

     

    A multi-lingual study powered  by  Google  AI  titled,  “Reflecting  India  –  An intersectional   and   longitudinal   analysis   of   popular scripted television from 2018 to 2022”, led jointly by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media (GDI), the Signal Analysis and Interpretation Laboratory (SAIL) at the University of Southern California (USC) as the academic advisor, and the IAA as media studies advisor was also unveiled at the event. The study covered the 10 most popular scripted television shows in India across five languages – Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu – between 2018 and 2022, according to the Broadcast  Audience Research Council (BARC), India.

     

    The study revealed several data-driven insights about representation in the India media and entertainment sector. Across all the shows analysed, young adults between the ages of 18 and 32 were seen the most, accounting for 75.6% of all characters present on screen, while characters with lighter skin appeared 8X more than characters with medium or dark skin tones. Female characters were present on screen and their names mentioned in dialogue more than male characters, amounting to over half of a show’s time, with 7 in 10 of all perceived female characters on screen typically being young and having lighter skin tones.

    Chief Guest Khushbu Sundar, Founder, Avni Cinemas and Member of National Commission for Women, also spoke on the occasion.

     

    The event saw the felicitation of Gender Warriors, industry seniors who have “championed gender equity, and led by example as protagonists of change”. This included advertising veteran KV ‘Pops’ Sridhar, Dr  A L  Sharada, Director, Population First, and social activist Dr Shyam Sundar Paliwal.

     

    Additionally, the event also recognized the distinguished service of, and felicitated the IAA North Star awardees, Srinivasan Swamy, Chairman and Managing Director, R K Swamy and Ramesh Narayan, Founder, Canco Advertising, for their contribution to the IAA.

     

    The day also saw panel discussion with industry experts Sameer Nair, MD, Applause Entertainment; Aparna Purohit, Head of Originals, Amazon Prime Video; Gaurav Banerjee, Content and Business Head, Disney Star, journalist Anuradha Sengupta, Raj Kamble, Founder and CCO, Famous Innovation; Mansha Tandon, Head of Marketing, YouTube India; Dr A L Sharada, director-screenplaywWriter Renzil D’Silva and journalist Prasad Sangameshwaran, among others.

     

    The day concluded with a fireside chat with actor and activist Dia Mirza conducted by television host Atika Farooqui.

     

  • IAA turns 85

    This month (October), the International Advertising Association (IAA), the leading network of marketing and marketing communications professionals and global umbrella body for the marketing and advertising industry, is celebrating 85 years of existence. This is being done with a series of events and initiatives aimed at bringing together its thousands of multidisciplinary members.

     

    Among the initiatives are:

    :: The official launch of IAA’s new 85 years celebrations logo starting October 3, 2023

    :: The IAA Global B2B Brand Summitwith a selection of the finest voices in B2B from around the world.

    :: A gala dinner in New York City, attended by 85 of IAA global leaders and IAA Compass partners from 56 countries around the world.

    :: The 45th IAA World Congress, which takes place every 2-3 years in major cities around the world, will be held in Penang, Malaysia highlighting sustainability, diversity, equity, inclusion and ESG.

  • Dr Bhaskar Das, others felcitiated at IAA Leadership Awards

    In the past, as Chief Minister, he has given the slip at some key A&M industry events. But now he’s Deputy Chief Minister he was present. At the annual leadership awards of the the International Advertising Association (IAA) India Chapter on Wednesday, August 9, in Mumbai With senior marketing, advertising, and media professionals, who came together to honour the exceptional accomplishments of these deserving recipients.

     

    The awards were presented across 15 industry categories, spanning automobiles, financial services, FMCG, E-commerce, Edtech, retail and consumer durables, acknowledging outstanding professionals’ diverse achievements and innovative contributions.

     

    Notable among the winners was media industry veteran Dr Bhaskar Das was was inducted into the esteemed IAA Hall of Fame, recognising his contributions and lasting impact on the media landscape.

     

    Other winners included:

    Adar Poonawalla, CEO, Serum Institute of India who was awarded the prestigious title of IAA Business Leader of the Year 2023.

    Rajdeepak Das, CEO & CCO, Leo Burnett South Asia and Chairperson, Creative Council, Publicis Groupe India was honoured with the IAA Creative Agency Leader of the Year award for his exceptional creativity and ground-breaking campaigns.

  • IAA hosts first digital event TechPulse

    The India Chapter of International Advertising Association (IAA) hosted its first-ever onground digital event, TechPulse.

     

    The theme of the event, “Digital Transformation: Implications for Advertising and Marketers,” saw discussions on opportunities and challenges presented by the digital landscape. Said Neena Dasgupta, Chairperson, IAA TechPulse, and CEO & Founder of The Salt Inc Consulting, CEO of Aidem Ventures: “With TechPulse, we brought together some of the brightest minds in the advertising and market industry. Going forward, IAA TechPulse will provide a platform for industry professionals to learn, share, and collaborate on the latest developments in the field.”

     

    IAA India chapter TechPulse kicked off with a minute of silence in honour of Siddharth Rao, Co-Founder WebChutney (acquired by Dentsu) and Punt Partners. Neena Dasgupta and Avinash Pandey, President – IAA India Chapter and CEO, ABP Network, set the context for the event before a conversation by Megha Tata, CEO Cosmos-Maya, and Anant Goenka, Chairperson, IAA TechPulse & Executive Director, The Indian Express Group, on the change in content delivery in linear and integrated context.

     

    The main event began with a session by Neeraj Roy, Founder & CEO of Hungama Digital Media Entertainment Limited, on the role of technology in India’s digital foundation and the opportunities it presents for maximizing efficiency. The event also saw a session by Charulata Ravi Kumar, MD of Accenture, on the topic of digital disruption and its impact on socio-economic changes.

     

    Karthi Marshan, Advisor, Kotak highlighted on the need for cautiously adopting the latest developments specifically in the areas of Banking and Finance. Tarun Katial, Founder & CEO of COTO App discussed the marketer’s dilemma in the conversational AI era and how to solve it.

     

    TechPulse also featured a panel discussion on “Marketing Solutions in a cookie-less world,” moderated by Nandini Dias, Former CEO, Lodestar UM. The panel members, Prasad Shejale, Founder & CEO, Logicserve Digital, Sanjay Sindhwani, CEO, Indian Express Digital, Siddharth Dhabade, Managing Director, MiQ, and Neil George, Managing Director, Nivea India, discussed the challenges and opportunities of marketing in a cookie-less world.

     

    Satya Raghavan, Director Marketing Partners at Google India, highlighted developments happening at Google in understanding consumer behaviour given emerging environmental and contextual constraints. Shilpa Sadana, Associate Director of Sales at Affinity Global Advertising and Ritu Mittal, Head of Marketing and Digital at Bayer Consumer presented a case study highlighting the significance of research insights in formulating creatives for digital platforms.

     

    The need for integrated media measurement and possible guidelines for it was presented by Priya Choudhary, Director of Business Solutions & Insights at Google India. This was followed by an panel discussion, moderated by Vivek Malhotra, Group CMO (India Today Group) and COO Consumer Revenue, focused on the new world of cross-media measurement. The panel members, L V Krishnan, CEO, TAM Media Research, Anand Chakravarthy, Chief Growth Officer, Omnicom Media Group, Vishal Chinchankar, CEO, Madison Digital, Gowthaman Ragothaman, Founding CEO of Aqilliz, and Prasun Basu, Head of Growth and Digital Transformation, Kantar, discussed the need for cross-media measurement and the challenges that come with it.

     

    The last session was by Amer Jaleel, former Group Chief Creative Officer and Chairman of MullenLowe Lintas Group, on the importance of creativity in the world of technology, data, and methods.

     

    The event also announced innovation awards to recognise the enterprises and the foresight of individuals to implement innovative thoughts into action. The innovation awards were identified under four segments – Marketing, Media, Agency and Platforms:

    :: Prasad Pimple, EVP and Head of Digital, Kotak Life was presented the innovation award for going deep into customer mindset segmentation and linking psychographic triggers to behaviour to unlock value across all digital activities.

    :: Niraj Ruparel, Emerging Tech – Lead at GroupM/WPP for diving deep into Conversational AI and Metaverse and bringing the two together to unlock and implement some of the best experienced innovations.

    :: Neha Barjatya, Director Marketing, Google India for combining the power of platforms and the ambition of empowering rural women to create sustained opportunities and strong communities.

    :: Vivek Malhotra, CMO India Today Group and COO Consumer Revenues for innovating on integration content, context and audience behavior to grow the customer base exponentially.

    The International Advertising Association (IAA) – India Chapter is set to host its first-ever digital event, TechPulse, on Thursday, April 27 in Mumbai. The event will focus on bringing together industry veterans, thought leaders, and innovators on a single platform to discuss the latest trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in the field of advertising and marketing.

     

    With the theme of ‘Digital Transformation: Implications for Advertising and Marketers’, TechPulse promises to be an insightful and engaging event for everyone involved in the advertising and marketing ecosystem.

     

    The event will be co-chaired by Anant Goenka, Executive Director of The Indian Express Group, along with Neena Dasgupta, CEO & Founder of The Salt Inc Consulting and CEO of Aidem Ventures.
