  • The Anchor: Viral Pandya on 5 ways how a small ad agency can beat the biggies

    By Viral Pandya

    1. Shut up and work!

Believe me, it really helps. While in bigger agencies, people spend more time in excruciatingly painful meetings, churning out bigger strategies and smallest of ideas, you can sneak your way through by working on insights and simplicity.

    2. More is less!

Remember it is never about how many pieces of work you bring to the table. And how many bucks you spend. Rather it is about coming up with a single piece of work that can do wonders for a brand, and of course for you too.

    3. All it takes is an idea!

People will only remember you for your last work. So it does not matter whether you are small or big. Come up with ideas that excite the hell out of people. A great work will never get unnoticed. The same way, a bad piece of work will never get unnoticed, especially when coming from the bigger agencies. Isn’t it a win-win situation for tiny little us!

    4. Love your clients!

As if they are the most important people in your life. Never forget that they have taken a great risk in you. They have given you an opportunity to prove your mettle. Don’t break their trust. Thrill them with great work. Take our instance; we share a great camaraderie with our client. We have enough and more freedom to work ingeniously. And together we believe in creating work that works. It is absolutely no surprise seeing our clients grow multifold. And that’s the reason we are winning international awards on our regular brand work, year after year. We always take our clients to each and every award show, and let them receive the awards. For us, looking at their faces glowing with pride is actually far bigger than the award itself.

    5. Let’s win!

For us, it is nothing but Guerrilla warfare. When you are small you work as a tribe. A strong combative unit. You are not afraid to lose. You are like Spartans taking on the might of big. Lead from the front. Take your team forward, and the glory shall be yours. People love to support the underdogs. Nobody expects anything from you. When bigger agencies win, their folks celebrate. And when we win, the world celebrates. Enjoy being small yet lethal, and let your work score BIG.

  • Anil Thakraney: ‘Giving’ season for Bollywood & TV-land

    By Anil Thakraney

It’s that season when many organizations will gave away many awards to many Bollywoodians. And the number of award givers is increasing with time, and I hope it stops right here. It would be a joke if in the year 2020 we have stars lining up for 30 events. Rather, I wish there were, at the most, two ceremonies, so that the awards are truly coveted and valued.

Aside from numbers, there are many problems with these awards shows in the Indian context, and for their own credibility, the organizers must do their damndest to sort them out.

For one, there must be absolute integrity in the judging process. Everyone and his father knows some winners get picked by non-jurists. Often either by the organizers themselves or by their sponsors or associates. And this gets amply proved when everyone who attends the show gets an award, and only the winners land up for the events. This is not the way it pans out either at the Oscars or the Golden Globes. And that’s the reason why Aamir Khan shuns these tamashas. Surely there is a way to deal with this continuing malaise. Maybe the will is lacking.

Two, since all the moolah comes from television rights, these shows are tailor-made for the tube. Quite a few acts don’t happen on stage, they get inserted in later. This makes no sense. If the stars are going to perform on stage, then they must do so in real time, in front of the hundreds of people in the audience. Because capsules get inserted in later, the show looks pretty artificial and scripted. Again, nowhere does this happen in the world. Organizers must make it mandatory for performers to perform live. That’s the beauty of an event. If we wanted to watch recorded stuff, we’d watch the regular TV shows.

And third, because these events get packaged as TV dramas, awards become the side show. ‘Extras’, in filmi lingo. In fact, awards for vernacular films and for the technical crew get done in a big rush, so that the entire time and energy goes into entertainment. Which is dance and thakela banter. Awards should be the big act, the rest of the stuff woven around them.

Lots of issues to be dealt with, and I am not even talking of the shoddy camera work. Hope one day we can put out an awards show that the West will envy and emulate.

    * * *

PS: If you haven’t watched ‘Shattered Glass’ already, you should quickly grab the DVD. Especially if you work in the media. It’s the story of a young reporter who cooks stories and quotes to quickly rise up the hierarchy. And also to deal with the intense pressure in the newsroom. This can so easily happen to any young journo. A warning for everyone.

  • [LOOKBACK 2011] What creative & media agencies won

    By Ritu Midha

A slew of international and national advertising and media awards dot the year. Agencies bag a prize, are written about, and in a few days, it is business as usual. The next set of awards comes up, another agency tops the chart, and the same cycle begins all over again.

There are, however, agencies which garner awards consistently, across the award shows. Sometimes a few make a mark on the national awards scene, but don’t win so many accolades in international shows or it can happen the other way round.

The year 2011 had a few interesting ups and downs: BBDO which managed to bag 14 awards globally, got just three within India. Contract which got 16 within the country,  got just two globally. Mindshare won 27 awards nationally and one globally, Maxus had a score of 21 and one respectively.

However, in the case of creative agencies, most national award winners have done well internationally too. (Perhaps the lesser number of global media awards has something to do with it!)

Below is a quick look at how the key winners in national awards did globally, and in a few cases, how the ones which did very well globally, did in the national scene.

  • NDTV’s Indian of the Year awarded, in style

    By Rahul Kishore

It’s always nice to be a part of the annual NDTV Indian of the Year event and this year was no different.

Prannoy Roy and team ably led by Barkha Dutt were in their element and handled proceedings with aplomb. That they managed to get all the awardwinners barring Narayan Murthy was proof of their leadership position in the news domain.

Dr Roy started by a small speech which essentially targetted his own fraternity, the media. He said that the media should not be above the law and stricter rules needed to be framed to handle defamation. These laws should be framed by the judiciary and not the government. It did not find favour with his friends in media but he would still back it.

Now onto the awards. Dev Anand at 88 and Rahul Dravid at 35 were honoured with lifetime achievement. This was followed by the World Cup winning squad, save Harbhajan and Sachin. Dhoni spoke quite well. When Gavaskar was asked what was the essential difference between the team in 1983 and this one, he said his was better looking! Brought the house down.

The following award was presented to Pranab Mukherjee and this was followed by one to Nandan Nilenkani. The main award was ‘Indian of the Year’ and it predictably went to Anna Hazare.  Alok Kejriwal received it on his behalf as Anna was on a maun vrat. He answered questions by scribbling on a pad. The afternoon was not without its theatrics with Kejriwal doing a ‘Bharat mata ki jai’ as well as an ‘Inquilab Zindabad’.Quite dramatic!

What the crowd waits for is Bollywood and they were not disappointed.Shankar Ehsan Loy got an award as well as the team of Zindagi na milegi dobara. Shankar managed to sing as well.Farhan in fact was quite a sport and managed to shake a leg with Barkha Dutt.

I enjoyed it thoroughly. What were the shortcomings? Well no mention of a jury or selection process and somewhat not as glamorous as last year, but it was a classy event as only NDTV can do.On to next year…

Additional reporting by MxM India correspondent:

NDTV announced the much awaited ‘Indian of the Year Award 2011’ in a star studded ceremony held in Delhi. Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal were declared as NDTV Indian of The Year 2011 for their exceptional contribution towards the society in the past year.

Evergreen actor Dev Anand and Cricketer Rahul Dravid were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards. M.S. Dhoni received the Indian Heroes Award with several of his team mates.

Dr Prannoy Roy, Chaiman, NDTV in his opening address spoke about the eventful year gone by being a transformational year for the country. “The Indian media today is the most fearless around the world. As part of the media, we are proud to be country’s fourth pillar. I feel it’s imperative now to have strong and effective defamation laws in the country.” He also added “Media cannot be above the law.”

Arvind Kejriwal on being felicitated as the Indian of the Year 2011 said, “I would like to dedicate this award to Anna Hazare and people of this country since I believe that every Indian is truly an Indian of the Year.”

Anna Hazare also extended his gratitude by thanking NDTV on being awarded with the title of the Indian of the Year by writing a message on a paper. He wrote, “If the Government fails to pass the bill then I will be forced to launch the agitation movement again.”(Since Anna Hazare is currently on the ‘Maun Vrat’ in his village – the channel connected with him live through a videoconferencing).

Also, receiving the Lifetime Achievement award, Rahul Dravid said ‘I am grateful to NDTV for this honour. I would like to thank all my fans for their love and support.’

  • Chitralekha honours best of times

    By A Correspondent

One of the most respected publications in the field of horology, Watch World, from the Chitralekha Group hosted the second edition of Watch World Awards on September 24, 2011. The jury comprised of several eminent and accomplished members from the watch making fraternities. Other jury members included connoisseurs of watches. The day was moderated by Mr Mitrajit Bhattacharya, President and Publisher, Chitralekha Group.

When asked how this edition of the prestigious award ceremony is any different, Mr Bhattacharya said “We have not done anything differently this year and haven’t changed the format in any way – It is only a natural progression. It’s only that more brands have participated this year and we have more nominations.  Also, the overall presence of international brands has increased.”

When asked what kind of a market Indian watches have, Mr Bhattacharya said, “I think the frequency of buying expensive watches in a certain target segment is really increasing. I will still like to add, that if you see the size of the market, it is perhaps not as big as what China (since we like to make China a benchmark). But perhaps, in the next five to seven years our market size will grow, perhaps even comparable to china.”

  • Rise of the Indie

    By Tuhina Anand

Creativeland Asia literally began life at Mr Sajan Raj Kurup’s dining table, where he discussed it with his friends four years ago when he quit his job as Regional Creative Director at Grey Worldwide. And the independent agency’s time seems to have come.

For those who need to break away from large networks where creativity sometimes yields to hierarchy, setting up their own agency is the answer. And it seems to be an answer that works. A recent example would be Creativeland Asia bagging the Independent Agency of the Year at Spikes Asia. This was the first year when this award was introduced, and it aims at encouraging the spirit of creative entrepreneurship that has helped forge outstanding companies.

Mr Kurup’s venture has now grown to a strength of 8o people across two full-fledged offices in India and nine strategic offices in Asia.

Creativeland Asia also brought home a Grand Prix in integrated media category for 3D Experience for its client Audi India, a business it bagged in July last year. This also was a campaign of Indian origin which for the first time Audi adapted and used across the globe. The agency also bagged a Bronze Spike in digital for Hippo’s Plan-T. In fact, it was invited by Twitter to make a presentation on Plan-T which basically is a Twitter-led campaign which has won them accolades for innovative thinking. The agency has also won awards and accolades at other platforms including D&AD, One Show, Adfest, Spikes Asia and Cannes, and our very own Goafest.

On his win, Mr Kurup, Founder & Creative Chairman, Creativeland Asia, says, “Winning the ‘Independent Agency of the Year’ award is a proud moment for us. This win is also significant for all independent agencies in India. To bag the Grand Prix for real work and on a global brand like Audi underscores the creative culture at Creativeland. It goes to show that when you consistently create good and inspiring work, lady luck is bound to shine on you sooner or later.”

The agency has also done some pathbreaking work for its client Frooti where the brand has been totally refreshed itself including a funky package design. It also launched recently Saint Juice beginning the exercise of naming the brand signifying purity and 100 per cent juice. Some of the other brands it has worked for include Café Coffee Day, Medimix, LMN and Appy Fizz among others. The common link among all the brands is that Mr Kurup when he started out had said he wanted the agency to focus on marketing to the youth, and largely the brands that Creativeland has worked on exude this approach in its work.

So does the win at Spikes for Creativeland really signify that today is the time of the independents. Yes, one can say that the time is conducive for independents with talent, and who are big on ideas, to come to the fore. Like Taproot changing the way industry looks at small agencies with its work on Airtel which is a big client, and getting praise for its campaign “Hare ek friend zaroori hota hai.” It’s also a time when the client’s approach is changing, too, and they are willing to take risks especially in a cluttered market with an overdose of media vehicles where it becomes imperative to get your brand noticed with cutting-edge and “hat ke” ideas.

In that sense Creativeland Asia’s win affirms this wind of change. And the might of independents cannot be undermined as they are ready to take the biggies and steadily increasing their strength by diversifying their portfolios. Just like Creativeland, which has been expanding its footprint with providing content for four television channels including two reality shows. In fact, the agency is also venturing into the film industry with their first production, Karmayogi.
