  • Mixed results for India as Spikes Asia gets underway

    By A Correspondent

Better known as the Cannes of the East, the Spikes Asia Festival of Creativity is no new international adfest. It was set up way back in 1987 as the Asian Advertising Awards by Media Magazine. It was held in Hong Kong and for seven years thereafter. It later moved to Bali and finally to Singapore.

Then, 21 years after inception, it got relaunched as Spikes Asia, following a collaboration between Haymarket, publishers of Media magazine now called Campaign Asia, and the organizers of the Cannes Lions. The proceedings take place in Singapore’s Suntec City.

There are various other festivals in Asia, as they are on an international level, but Spikes has grown much in stature. This year, over 1800 industry professionals from 28 countries are said to be attending the three days of learning, insights, celebration and networking. Honouring Asia-Pacific’s creative excellence in advertising and communications, this year a total of 4832 entries have been received for the Awards which are judged by leading international and regional creatives and industry experts. The best creative work in the categories of Film, Print, Outdoor, Radio, Digital, Integrated, Direct, Promo & Activation, Media, Print & Poster Craft, Film Craft, Design, Mobile, PR, Branded Content & Entertainment and Creative Effectiveness are awarded.

Australia has submitted the most entries with 710, followed by China with 679, Japan with 622, Singapore with 520, India with 509 and Hong Kong with 307 entries. Entries have been submitted into 16 different awards categories: Film (373), Print (565), Outdoor (762), Radio (154), Media 447), Direct (342), Promo & Activation (385), Digital (273), Print & Poster Craft (368), Film Craft (331), Design (263), PR (195), Mobile (124), Integrated (58), Branded Content & Entertainment (161), and Creative Effectiveness (31). Note the number of overall entries has reduced a wee bit and so have the entries from India.

As many as 77 industry practitioners from APAC and beyond that make up the 10 juries will soon cast their votes and decide on who will take home the coveted Spikes awards. Leading the juries are: Tham Khai Meng, Worldwide Chief Creative Officer of Ogilvy & Mather and Chairman of Ogily’s Worldwide Creative Council (Film, Print, Outdoor and Radio plus Integrated); Jose Miguel Sokoloff, Chairman of Lowe SSP3 and President Creative Council of Lowe Worldwide (Direct and Promo & Activation); Masaru Kitakaze, Executive Creative Director and Corporate Officer of Hakuhodo (Digital and Mobile);  Mike Cooper, Worldwide CEO of PHD (Media); Derek Lockwood, Worldwide Director of Design, Saatchi & Saatchi (Design); Lynne Anne Davis, President and Senior Partner, Asia Pacific, FleishmanHillard (PR); Lo Sheung Yan, Chairman, Asia Pacific Creative Council, JWT (Craft); Anthony Freedman, Group CEO of Host, Sydney (Branded Content & Entertainment); and Jarek Ziebinski, President, Leo Burnett Asia Pacific (Creative Effectiveness). There are six Indian jurors in the 78 (in no specific order): Josy Paul, Sanjiv Sharma, Sudhir Sharma, Chandrasekar Radhakrishnan, Pratap Bose and Ajit Varghese

“This is an extraordinary amount of work that will require the full attention of the talented juries as they unite to select the best pieces of creative communications being produced in the APAC region,” says Philip Thomas, CEO of Lions Festivals.  “The winning work which will drive inspiration and push the industry forward, will not only have an impact at a regional level, but also globally. We eagerly look forward to the results of Spikes 2013.”  The winners will be revealed during the Spikes Asia awards ceremony on Tuesday, September 17.

Day 1 and 2 of Spikes Asia had an interesting set of speakers, but all eyes were on the shortlists that were declared in two instalments. India drew a blank in Radio, Digital, Mobile and Branded Content/Entertainment. But the news from the shortlists is no great shakes for India. There’s just one in Promotions and Activations, two each in Direct and Film, PR gets three (and these are not PR agencies), Design gets six, Media has eight (including some in digital and mobile which didn’t get a mention in the digital and mobile shortlists, Print gets 14 and Outdoor is the big one with 26. The tally thus far has 62 shortlists.

It’s too early to do an agency-wise analysis. It would perhaps be more appropriate once the final results are out tomorrow (Tuesday, Sep 15) evening. The rest of the shortlists will also be announced tomorrow, which is the last day of Spikes Asia.

  • RC&M nets 7 awards at RMAI Corporate Awards 2012

    By A Correspondent

Rural Marketing Association of India (RMAI) held the fourth edition of the RMAI Corporate Awards in association with Sahaj being the main sponsor and Tata Steel and Reliance Broadcast as the associate sponsors.

RC&M won gold for their campaign Mahindra Samriddhi India Agri Awards in the category of Best integrated initiative using ATL/BTL – Durables.

Mahindra Khiladi No. 1 in the category of Best integrated initiative using ATL/BTL – Durables, Mahindra Technology in the category of Using never before used media – Innovative way of Communication – Durables and Mahindra Samriddhi in the category of New concepts in Agriculture and Dairy – Durables bagged the Silver.

Bronze were taken by Mahindra Samriddhi (Best Long Term Rural Communication Initiative for more than two years – Durables), M&M International Door Delivery (On ground / Event Marketing – Service) and Mahindra Khiladi No. 1 (Sports Initiatives – Durables).

Priya Monga, Business head, RC&M, on this achievement said, “RC&M has marked innumerable milestones in these 22 years in terms of developments, achievements and successful endeavors. We have established a pan-India presence which is not only a matter of pride but also a constant source of motivation. It’s a matter of immense pride and honour to keep receiving these awards as a token of recognition and appreciation. RMAI awards have provided the entire industry with a great platform to showcase their work. We hope we continue to deliver innovative and result oriented results.”

  • Lookback 2012: Wins and wows

As far as the sheer number of advertising awards goes, advertising and media agencies have a good array to participate in – at the India, regional and global level. The number of awards coming home has also increased, though the London International festival and One Show still elude the fraternity. At London we could convert one out of three shortlisted into an award – and at One Show even that did not happen.

A few interesting observations about the awards scenario:

    1. The agencies that win in India and those which one overseas are not the same – even if the same agencies win at both the places, the number of awards won does not match at all. Do the juries at both (Indian and International) awards think differently, parameters are different, or does the Indian jury does a much better job of selecting the winning entries because they can understand them better in the Indian context?

    2. Agencies keep winning a number of awards for the same client – and sometimes it happens across award functions and years. Are these clients more open to letting the agency experiment, does the agency put in its best resources behind these clients, does the work come into the limelight once awarded, or is it sheer coincidence?

    3. While in media it is largely the big agencies flexing their muscles – in creative, the younger agencies too are being applauded.

    4. Indian media agencies have a better entry to award conversion rate than creative agencies. Interestingly when it comes to Yahoo Big Idea Chair – even there media agencies have done an excellent job, Maxus leading the way. The only Grand Prix India bagged in the year is by MindShare.

We have attempted putting together a comprehensive list of awards won by Indian advertising and media agencies – and are extremely proud to see the tally soaring. The data is based on secondary research, and is subject to human error – so in case you have won and are missing in our tables or the award is not indicated correctly, give us a shout and we will do the needful.

May we bring many more awards home in the year 2013, and increase the tally year after year.

  • Jaldi 5 with Srinivasan K Swamy: IAA awards will recognize successful marketers, agency and media professionals

The International Advertising Association’s India chapter announced the IAA Leadership Awards yesterday (Monday, December 17). The objective of the awards is to recognize individuals in the fields of marketing, advertising and media, who have made enormous professional contributions and delivered business success to their companies. The inaugural awards are to be held in February 2013 with I&B Minister Manish Tewari as Chief Guest.

In an interview with MxMIndia, Srinivasan K Swamy, President of International Advertising Association and CMD, RK Swamy BBDO, spoke on the awards, the intent behind them and how they will be different from the others.

    01. Personality awards always get ‘political’. Why did the IAA get into this activity?

Company or Brand Awards do not recognize adequately  individual’s contribution. If the process is transparent, which is what we will ensure through Nielsen research team and audit by Ernst & Young of that, we believe we can avoid all controversies. The IAA membership comprises individuals from advertisers, advertising agencies and the media. It is therefore most appropriate that IAA honours individuals from these related fields in a common platform.

    02. How will you ensure that every one from amongst the fraternity participates in the voting?

There can be no guarantee that everyone will vote. But efforts will be on to ensure that many votes will be gathered to ascertain the true winner in the chosen category.

    03. In many ways, the award appears to be quite like the Impact Person of the Year award, run by the exchange4media group. The selection process is similar. They had AC Nielsen earlier and now IMRB. You have Nielsen. IAA of course has E&Y to audit and validate the process. Your comments?

The Impact Person of the Year chooses only one individual. We will have many CMO winners from various marketing categories, best advertiser CEO, best creative agency CEO, best media agency CEO, best news anchor, best news editor etc. We believe there has been no attempt so far to bring so many successful marketers, agency personnel and media people together and applaud their outstanding contribution.

    04.  Will there be a ‘lifetime achievement award’ too?

There will be a Lifetime Achievement Award. More on that on the awards night!

The AAAI used to have one, but it appears to have discontinued…?

    AAAI has not discontinued it.

    05. On a lighter note, why did you award Nielsen and not Hansa for the initial research process?

Isn’t it obvious?  Why create an impression of conflict of interest?

  • The Anchor: Naved Akhtar on 5 things that have changed in advertising

    By Naved Akhtar

    1. Advertising has become a business:

The pressure to perform is so high that many times creativity is given a miss. There is a role reversal – earlier the creative people were held in high esteem, now the client has become the one leading the show. Advertising has become a business with roles being changed.

    2. Work for awards v/s real work

There are two different kinds of work that has emerged. The work that is done to purely win awards and then there is real work that is done to drive the product in the market. Twenty years ago one would see the same ads that were have worked for a business also winning awards but now there is just no connect. I think that now the award winning works are more like fine arts and done for self-exultation.

    3. The aura gone from advertising

In the earlier days, the creative fraternity had an aura around themselves; and were respected for their creative genius. Now advertising is seen as just any other business and the appeal that people emanated who were a part of the business has gone.

    4. TV has become important

Today television has become ‘the’ medium for advertising unlike earlier where press was given more due.

    5. Fun is low

I think the fun has gone out of advertising because of pressure of work, win new businesses and remain ahead of competition. There was a time when people were into advertising for love of advertising now this is purely business and means of earning bread and butter.
