Q. Over the last few years, the trust that the ‘aam aadmi’ had in the various arms of our democracy – the executive, legislature, judiciary and media – has diminished. Would you agree?
A. Your question must have been based on some tell-tale signs that prompted you to raise such an apprehension. I hope they are not staccato episodes. Even it is so, that’s how cynics are born. But we needn’t lose hope. If one looks around, there is enough evidence to inspire. Actually, the pandemic has intensified human struggle for existence and faith can get shaken if one experiences collective loss of normalcy and collective experience of grief. Even the four pillars are run by human beings. Omissions can happen, when no assumptions have been working. But that doesn’t mean that one should throw the baby with the bath water. The four pillars of a democratic set-up have more benefits than costs. A pandemic-led pessimism must not derail us from our confidence in our Institutions. As citizens, even we have to work together with the system to make it work. Cacophony of negatives won’t get us out of the quagmire of despondency.
