Q. There was a time when marketing or sales folks had an edge to occupy the corner room. Later it was CFOs. In the light of what’s been happening in the recent past, do you think legal professionals will now have an edge room in A&M&E companies?

A. Seems to me to be a sweeping generalisation based on your  RAM (random access memory) and not on the basis of a statistically significant trendline. There are enough and many examples to the contrary if one delves deep into occupancy details of CEOs. Secondly, please don’t forget that ceos are expected to know less and less of more and more things that impacts a business enterprise. Their skill lies in detecting signals from noise and rally the qualified people for combating any critical situation and lead it from the front. Legal is just one of them.

At a given point of time a particular discipline might demand urgent attention but one can’t ignore the emergent imperatives of running a business. So ambidexterity is the hallmark of an effective ceo who have to evolve continuously to confront a business TUNA ( turbulent, uncertain, novel and ambiguous).
