    Hindi movie channel Star Gold has launched a campaign titled ‘Dekh Ke Chalo’ aimed at increasing public awareness along with changing the public’s attitude and behavior towards the importance of social distancing and wearing a mask.

     

    Said a unnamed Star Gold spokesperson, explaining the thought behind the brand’s initiative: “With people now emboldened to step outside and reclaim their life, there is a tendency to believe that we have put the worst days of the pandemic behind us.   • Star Gold 2 set to launch on Feb 1, 2020

    Entertainment is a critical component for any broadcast business and despite the growth of OTT platforms (its own Hotstar included), Star India has announced the launch of Star Gold 2, its newest offering in the Hindi movie channel category. One can now expect various premieres of newly acquired Bollywood movies on both Star Gold and Star Gold 2.

     

    Star Gold has acquired 25 recently released blockbusters and upcoming Bollywood movies of 2020, further strengthening its library of over 1500 titles including Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Baaghi 3, ’83, Angrezi Medium, Panga, War, Chhapaak, Bala, Housefull 4, Mardaani 2, among others

  • Premium Hindi movie channel Star Gold Select HD to also launch today

    It’s not just Sony BBC Earth that’s launching today. Star India has announced  its fourth Hindi movies channel – Star Gold Select HD. An HD-only channel, Star Gold Select will serve carefully curated, meaningful stories from Indian cinema on television to a discerning audience, notes a communique. The channel will go live today, March 6, albeit with a much lesser blitz than Earth.

    Said Hemal Jhaveri, General Manager, Hindi movies cluster at Star India: “From a Hindi movie content-consumption point of view, it’s safe to say that India is at its best stage so far. Movie lovers across the country are looking for differentiated content in films, television and digital. With the launch of this channel, we will cater to this need with our handpicked movies that have a compelling storyline”.

  • Jai Ho! Star Gold acquires rights of 18 top flicks

    Star Gold appears to be setting the tone for blockbuster television premieres in 2014. The channel announced the acquisition of a fresh movie library as part of its extensive plans for 2014 in the Hindi movies genre. The new acquisition comprises 18 highly anticipated Bollywood films of the year including films of leading superstars such as Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Ranbir Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan.

     

    In early 2013, Star India had signed an exclusive television broadcast rights deal with superstars Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn for their films till 2017. In addition to this, the network has signed a deal for other exciting movies for its 2014 movies line up- Some of the high profile premieres slated for the year include Jai Ho, Kick, Bombay Velvet, Bang Bang, Roy, Action Jackson, Singham 2, Hamshakals, Bobby Jasoos and Creature, according to a communiqué.

     

    Announcing the movie acquisition plans for the year, Hemal Jhaveri, Executive Vice President, Star Gold and Movies OK said: “We have consistently received a phenomenal response for the big ticket premieres on our network.  Apart from entertaining the audiences, movie premieres also prove to be an extremely successful platform from the advertisers’ standpoint. Hence, it proves to be a win-win situation for all stakeholders. For 2014, we have targeted a diverse content line up acquiring films across different genres. Our strategy has always been to simply offer our viewers’ content they want to watch, rather than what we want them to watch”

     

    Touted to be the first hit of 2014, Yaariyan shall kick start the movie premieres for the year across the network. This shall be followed by Salman Khan’s Jai Ho, the first 100 crore grossing blockbuster of the year. The other acquired films of 2014 include Gang of Ghosts, Traffic, Sonali Cable, O Teri, Traffic, Bhaag Johnny and Hawaa Hawaai. The newly acquired movies are bought for a period of 10 years with exclusive telecast rights

     

    In 2012, the network had acquired over 500 films from the Viacom 18 group followed by adeal with superstars Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn in early 2013. Star India has successfully premiered blockbusters such as Singham, Bodyguard, Ra.One, Housefull 2, Bol Bachchan, Son of Sardaar, Dabangg 2 and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

     

  • Star Gold launches on Virgin Media in UK

    Adding another feather to the cap of the Star Network UK operations, Yeshpal Sharma, Sr Vice President Star UK & Europe, has announced the launch of Star Gold on Virgin Media as part of their ‘Asian Mela’ offering.

  • Hindi channels say ‘Vanakkam’ & ‘Namaskaaram’ to Southern hits

    What is common between Ghajini, Wanted and Bhool Bhulaiya, apart from the fact that they were all blockbusters and starred A-listed actors? The fact that they were all remakes of popular South Indian films.

     

    Lately, Bollywood has been experimenting with a lot of films made down south. And since, the small screen is a reflection of what happens on the big screen, even the channels – movie as well as GECs – are cashing in.

     

    There has been a spate of south Indian dubbed films being shown on the television. According to the recent data, there isn’t much difference between the ratings for Hindi and dubbed films on TV. On an average, both get a 0.3TVR (HSM CS15+ on channels like Colors, Star Plus, Sony Max, UTV Movies, Star Gold in Jan -June) as compared to prime time where Hindi movies score better.

     

    So, it is logical to wonder, why the sudden acceptance of South Indian dubbed films on national channels? Is it a Rajnikanth effect or there is more than what meets the eye…

     

    Formula or freshness?

    Manisha Sharma, weekend programming head, Colors feels that the acceptance started gradually over four-five years ago with experimentation by all three stakeholders – Bollywood, broadcaster and viewer.

    “The viewer was getting hungry for content and the increased frequency with which Hindi blockbuster movies were being repeated ensured that he was willing to experiment with dubbed movies. The other thing that worked for the dubbed movies was the fact that the production quality of south Indian movies has gone up tremendously in the last decade. Also, the movies which were initial successes were the ones which had stars who, at some point, had crossed over into Hindi like Rajnikanth and Nagarjuna,” she added.

     

    According to media planner Anilkumar Sathiraju, associate VP and head South, Mudra Max, the fresh content and faces are working in favour of the dubbed movies on channels. “Movies down south, especially Telugu films, have a certain mantra – say six over-the-top fight scenes, two behind-the bushes romantic songs – which isn’t very common in Bollywood movies of late. So, people don’t mind watching something ‘different’.”

    However, there are movie channels like Zee Cinema, which have been showing South Indian dubbed films for a long time, which feel that the trend has caught on other channels recently. “To be frank, these movies have always rated on Zee Cinema, so the appetite has always been there. Other channels have picked the trend up in the past few years and now the viewer gets South films, dubbed in Hindi, all across. Now with South Indian films being remade into Hindi films, the appetite for dubbed films has increased,” says Mohan Gopinath, business head, Zee Cinema.

    Also with broadcasters taking precautions to maintain the real essence of the film while dubbing, not much is lost in translation. So, viewers find it easy to relate to the films.

     

    Manasi Sapre, director programming and acquisitions, Movie channels UTV, said: “Though, dubbing is a challenging job, we make sure that the essence of the film isn’t lost in the process. Therefore, it varies – sometimes they are sourced dubbed and sometimes we do it.”

    “Till a decade or so ago, most regional movies were shown with subtitles which didn’t attract the viewer as much it does today, since they are dubbed. So, not only masala movies but also artistic films are able to find their way into one’s living room,” said Vijay Subramaniam, deputy GM, Madison Media.

     

    Apart from the content and viewer’s acceptance, Anamika Mehta, COO, LodestarUM feels that it’s the explosion of media which is behind this: “What happened with the song Kolaveri di is the finest example one can give today. Boundaries are shrinking and more and more people are coming to know about the film culture down South.”

     

    Cost cutting

    Vajir Singh, editor, Box Office India accepts that freshness in content and crossover of actors – famous like Rajnikanth or lesser-known ones like Siddharth – does play a role, but feels that it is the cost of acquisition that plays a bigger part here: “If a channel can purchase entertainment at cheaper rates, then why shouldn’t it? South Indian films in comedy and action genre have always done well as they provide pure entertainment to viewers and eyeballs to the channel.”

     

    He’s not the only one to voice such a sentiment. Even media planners feel that cheaper acquisition rates are a main reason why suddenly these movies are being shown on television so frequently. “It is far cheaper to acquire little older or newer South Indian movies than latest Hindi movies which are showcased as premieres on the weekends by channels. So, it helps them to build a bigger library,” said Ms Mehta.

     

    “Broadcasters, over years, have been struggling with increased cost of acquisition, limited hits and increased competition. As compared to about a decade ago when a Bollywood star would have 2-3 releases a year, today stars prefer to do one movie at a time. Also, in a good business year the number of blockbuster movies will not cross 10. This, coupled with the fact that there are new channels getting launched in both Hindi GE and Hindi movie space, ensured that broadcasters was struggling for content and more willing to experiment with south Indian dubs,” explained Ms Sharma.

     

    The new experimentation seems to be working for Bollywood and it is working for the channels and viewers too. No one seems to mind it!

  • Star to launch Movies OK channel on May 6

    The offices of Star India are buzzing for more reasons that one. On May 6, not only is perhaps the biggest ever TV show on Indian TV being launched in the form of Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate, but the network is also introducing to the world its second Hindi movie channel, Movies OK.

     

    Star has confirmed the news of the launch and test signals are on. So how will it be different from Star Gold? It will be part of the Life OK suite, and reinforce family viewing and togetherness.

     

    The channel is going to exploit the library it bought from Viacom 18 and starting May 28, it will have a week-long World TV Premiere… so a new film every day at primetime.

     

    The channel will be headed by Star Gold general manager Hemal Jhaveri.

     

  • Monetising big ticket movies isn’t easy: Hemal Jhaveri, Star Gold

    Movies on TV are, no doubt, a hot business now especially for general entertainment channels who often do premiers of big-ticket movies to spur GRPs and in the process move ahead of the competition. Recently Star has acquired the rights of Kahani and Dabangg 2 while Zee has acquired Don 2.

     

    Last year Star acquired the Viacom library as a strategy to become the largest player as far as the sheer number of movies is concerned. Now the network enjoys a rich library of movies that it showcases across channels.

     

    MxM India’s Rishi Vora speaks to Hemal Jhaveri, Business Head of Star Gold on acquisition strategies, cost versus profitability issue and much more.

     

    Q: What is Star India’s strategy as far as acquisition of movies is concerned?

    We have been very aggressive on movie acquisitions. In fact, Star Gold, where we do a lot of premiers, is in the forefront of movie acquisitions. In the recent past we’ve acquired movies like Singham, Ra.One, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Rockstar, to name a few.

     

    Q: Do you normally sign deals even before the movie goes on ground for the shoot?

    It is Dabangg 2 that we signed before the shooting began. A few acquisitions we’ve done – some of them are under production. While the stars do matter, what we do as a practice is put a strict content lens on it, so we try to minimise the risks in that fashion.

     

    Once you buy a movie it has to deliver the same amount of returns over seven to 11 years. That’s the length of time we look at while acquiring movies. So it’s clearly beyond the premier game. If a great movie comes our way and we feel that it’s not apt for the television audience, we will not go for it.

     

    Q: In case of Dabangg 2 – you’ve acquired that at a significant price. So, why make that kind of an investment when you don’t really know if it’ll deliver?

    It’s Dabangg 2. It’s Salman Khan.

     

    Q: That’s the only factor?

    Yes. See, Dabangg 2 is a great franchise to earn. After acquisition of the Viacom slate where we have Dabangg and now Dabangg 2 – we’ve acquired the whole Viacom library. All of their 500 movies are ours.

     

    Q: When did this acquisition take place?

    We acquired that in December last year. With this, it just makes us the largest movies library in the country.

     

    Q: Huge monies are spent on movie acquisitions at times. Dabangg 2 in this case. Is it a risk worth taking?

    It depends on what you’re buying and at what price.

     

    Q: 3 Idiots got acquired in about Rs 30 crore by the network which owns the rights. They’ve milked it well and the buzz is it has made about Rs 200 crore or even more.

    Yes, 3 Idiots did very well from the standpoint that it made a lot of money.

     

    Q: The buzz is that Dabangg 2 has been acquired for Rs 50 crore.

    I will not like to make a comment on that. The cost of acquisition is higher than 3 Idiots considering the latter was acquired some three to four years ago. And the fact that inflation plays its part.

     

    Q: What is your view on ROI for advertisers who buy spots on big-ticket movies that premier on TV?

    Well, I can only talk about Star Gold and the advertiser response we get. Singham rated 8.7 TVR, Bodyguard set the new record at 10 TVR and Ra.One was 6.7. All of these movies have done well on the ratings front.

     

    From the standpoint of an advertiser, these movies are a fantastic platform. So it’s really a win-win situation.

     

    Advertisers need to look at it from a portfolio approach and not just a single movie. There are movies which may or may not do well on TV. It’s not easy monetising big-ticket movies. The cost continues to go up. The cost of movies has gone up close to 30 per cent since the last two or three years. Advertisers should look at the portfolio of movies and the duration period till we own the rights. We have movies to which we own the rights for 11 years.

     

    Q: But if you keep playing the same movie again and again, how much will you be monetising on that anyway?

    We’re in the business of repeats. First and foremost there are not many movies that get made, and out of the movies that are released, there are only a few that do well. So the universe of movies keeps getting smaller and smaller. For example this year there are going to be only two Salman Khan movies and one Aamir Khan movie from what I gather.

     

    Q: But what I’m saying is that if you’re running a movie say for the 20th time, the revenue in terms of ad sales on that 20th run will not be much.

    Not really. Say a channel which does 140 to 150 GRPs, there are a good set of audiences that come on to the channel. So yes, we may have movies running many times on the channel. What we attempt to do is make enough profits. And the revenue that eventually gets generated is not bad.

     

    Q: What movies are we going to see from Star this year?

    The movies for 2012-13 which we have acquired are Bol Bachchan, Kahani which will be aired soon, and Housefull 2.

     

    Q: When was the acquisition done for Kahani?

    Kahani we acquired four months ago. I can’t tell you exactly when it’ll be aired on TV.

     

  • Salman Khan sets a Rs50cr record by selling satellite rights for Dabangg sequel

    If you have been wondering whatever happened to Chulbul Pandey, news is that the Dabangg star – Salman Khan – will be back this Christmas in a sequel of the 2010 hit. And even before Khan begins shooting for Dabangg2 next week in Mumbai, the satellite rights for the movie have been snapped up by Star Network for a record Rs 48-50 crore for 11 years, according to a trade source closely associated with the deal. Also the music rights have been acquired by T-Series for over Rs 10 crore, said the same source.

     

    Though Hemal Jhaveri, senior vice-president at Star Gold confirmed the deal, he refused to share the details of the deal or the price. Jhaveri is responsible for acquiring the satellite rights for Star’s Hindi network, which includes Star Plus, Star Gold and Life OK.

     

    Just like his box office record, Khan’s satellite ratings have been trailblazing. Bodyguard, another of Khan’s blockbusters, registered a record television rating points (TRP) of 10.3 when it was aired on Star Gold in December 2011. The channel expects nothing less, if not more from Dabangg2, said Jhaveri.

     

    TRP, given in percentages, is a measure of what percentage of people in a defined time band and a defined profile watched a particular programme, a number which is keenly followed by the advertising industry and ads allocated accordingly to the one garnering the higher numbers.

     

    A film is considered a success on TV if it can manage to garner an average 2.5 TRP through the year, apart from the high number it garners on premieres. For example, the ICC Cricket World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka last year garnered a TRP of 21 (on three channels – Star Sports, Star Cricket and Doordarshan).

     

    Over the past few years, satellite prices have been playing a key role in bank-rolling films with at least a third of the movie’s cost of production coming from selling these rights prior to even beginning production.

     

    A Win-Win Situation for Channel

    It is also a win-win scenario for the channel, which generates both eyeballs and revenues by exclusively broadcasting a successful movie over a number of years. Competition among TV companies wanting to acquire the rights of hit movies has, as a result, led to an increase in the acquisition price of many recent big films.

     

    Hrithik Roshan’s Krissh3 and the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Don2 was said to have been sold to Sony for Rs37 crore each, while Aamir Khan’s Talaash and Karan Johar’s Agneepath went for Rs40 crore.

     

    Channels usually spend an average of Rs 200-300 crore a year to acquire film titles for their library. “Increase in satellite prices for big-ticket films has a direct linkage to maximising gross rating points (GRPs), for the channels,” said Rakesh Jariwala, film segment leader, Ernst & Young.

     

    Movies contribute as high as 30 per cent to a channel’s GRPs. The channels also generate revenue from syndication and overseas subscriptions for the films they buy.

     

    Over the past two years, it’s been a close race between Star and Sony, with each raising the stakes with every new film. For Star, with films like Bol Bachchan, Son of Sardar, Ghayal Returns and Housefull 2 all snapped up, the slate for this year looks full while Sony has Aamir Khan’s Talaash and YRF’s Ek Tha Tiger among others.

     

    “We have built on the content game and we are confident of the returns as well as its ability to garner TRPs beyond the premiere,” added Mr Jhaveri. While Dabangg, produced by Arbaaz Khan Productions, was acquired by Ashtavinayak Cinevision, the sequel has so far not been sold to any corporate house, although almost every film corporate, including Hollywood studios in India, have been very eager to have it on their slate. Prices offered have ranged between Rs100 crore and Rs130 crore, though industry sources say in all likelihood the brothers will release the film themselves, after the success of Johar’s Agneepath.

     

    Star Network’s recent track record with Bodyguard, Singham and Ra.One, all notching up record TRPs, has also worked hugely in its favour. And with Star also holding a strong portfolio of Salman Khan’s films – Dabangg, Wanted, Ready, Bodyguard, Tere Naam, Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya- for 7-8 years, backing a Khan package may help garner more eyeballs.
