Content in Hindi GEC space is evolving: Punit Goenka

As Managing Director and CEO of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL), Punit Goenka leads one of India’s most successful and profitable television networks. He is also Chairman of the Broadcast Audience Research Council, the joint industry body formed to design, commission, supervise and own a television broadcast audience measurement system. He was awarded the coveted Media Person of the Year award by the IAA India Chapter.

Your thoughts on winning the Mediaperson of the Year award at IAA Leadership Awards?

It is a great honour to be chosen the Media Person of the Year. I accept this award with great humility on behalf of the entire Zee family. The award is a result of the valuable lessons learnt from our Chairman Subhash Chandra and of the innovative approach taken by the entire team at Zee. My kudos to other winners and nominees as well.

The Hindi General Entertainment Channel (GEC) landscape is currently witnessing a lot of action amongst the top 4-5 players.  How would you assess the evolution of content in the entertainment genre?

Yes, the content genre in the Hindi GEC landscape has been evolving a lot of late. We have seen many experiments happening on television and you will see the content genre evolving much faster in the near future. I cannot talk about specifics but at Zee, there will be a lot happening going forward.

Has the digitisation exercise benefitted Zee in any way?

Just by putting set-top boxes doesn’t mean that a home is digitised. I think the industry has to work together to make digitisation happen.

Sports has been a focus area for broadcasters in the recent past. How do you view the performance by the sports channels in the Zee stable?

We do not create content for sports, we only aggregate content. As you know our country is not a sporting country, it is a cricketing country. The cricket rights for the next 6-8 years have been divided between 2-3 players today in the space. I hope that the country becomes a sporting nation rather than a cricketing nation in the future. This will lead to sports networks having a bright future going forward. Also, the sports business in the country isn’t providing good returns as the costs continue to go up. The revenues have been stagnant for the longest time but hopefully that will change one day.

How do you see 2014 panning out for your network?

2014 would definitely be tougher than 2013 and we look forward to the challenges this year. The general elections scheduled in April-May are very important.  -MxMIndia.com

2013 was a rewarding year for IPG Mediabrands: Shashi Sinha

Shashi Sinha, CEO of media services conglomerate IPG Mediabrands, was awarded the Media Agency Head of the Year. He was also President of the Advertising Club until mid-2013 and is currently Head of the all-important Technical Committee of BARC, the joint industry body appointed to govern television audience measurement in the country

How is this award different from what the other award platforms have to offer?

This award is a combination of marketing, media and advertising and I do not know of any other platform that does this. It’s more of the individual and his organisation that gets rewarded here. So it’s a good feeling to be picking up the Media Agency Head of the Year award.

Last year was a formative one for IPG Mediabrands where all agencies were clubbed under one umbrella. How did the year turn out to be for you?

As you know, 2013 was a year of churn for the company. I got at the helm of IPG Mediabrands in end of 2012 so it’s been just a year for me. I am lucky to be having a team who are all from within the network. Also, I have been actively been a part of industry bodies like Ad Club and BARC which may have worked in my favour this year.

In terms of growth, is the industry clocking at a healthy rate as predicted?

Last year was a tough year for the industry. The growth was not as high as a few had predicted. Our estimate was around 9 per cent growth for 2013. We were slightly more conservative compared to the others in releasing our numbers but we were on track with our predictions.

Business-wise, you picked up some good clients…

As for the agency, 2013 was a very good year for us as we also picked up a few good businesses especially at the end of the year. If at all there was a year for us, 2013 would be apt to be winning a big award. The year saw us putting all our companies together; we also bought agencies like Interactive Avenues etc. So it was a testing yet rewarding year for IPG Mediabrands.

You are the Chairman of BARC Technical Committee. When do you see the measurement hurdle being resolved in the country?

A robust rating mechanism is what we are aiming at. Our sense is that the basic contours are right. It is just a matter of time before it all comes together and we have a robust measurement system in place.

  • Second edition of IAA Leadership Awards on March 1

    By A Correspondent

After a successful debut last year, the India chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA) has announced the second edition of the IAA Leadership Awards. The awards will be presented on March 1, 2014 at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai. Leading GEC Colors Colors is the presenting partner this year too.

The IAA Leadership Awards will salute the excellence of marketers across 12 industry categories. The awards will be presented by I&B minster Manish Tewari.

    Srinivasan Swamy

Speaking about the second edition of the IAA Leadership Awards, Srinivasan K Swamy, President IAA India and VP-Development, IAA Asia Pacific, and Chairman RK SWAMY BBDO said: “Our process is constantly being fine-tuned to ensure that these awards remain the benchmark for excellence in our industry.”

Commenting on the association, Raj Nayak, CEO, Colors said: “We are excited to continue our association with the IAA Leadership Awards for the second year in a row.  In as much as we see our channel as the medium that connects brands with consumers in an effective manner, these awards connect excellence with corporate leaders in a similarly effective manner”

    Raj Nayak

To ensure the authenticity and credibility of the awards and maintain the highest level of transparency at all stages, IAA had a taskforce which looked at various performance criteria in every category under consideration, like revenue/market share growth, marketing initiatives undertaken, innovative schemes, launches, advertising spends etc to shortlist the nominees.Nielsen was engaged thereafter to have the nominees voted upon by senior marketers to pick the final winner. Ernst & Young will look at the process to satisfy itself of its fairness and will officially tabulate the results.

  • Media & marketing captains shine at IAA Leadership Awards

    By A Correspondent

ITC CEO Yogi Deveshwar, Madison World CEO Sam Balsara and Ogilvy & Mather CEO Piyush Pandey were amongst the award-winners at the Colors International Advertising Association Leadership Awards held in Mumbai on Saturday. Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari was chief guest of the evening. Pradeep Guha, former IAA president, who has been CEO, Zee Entertainment and President, Bennett Coleman and Company Ltd and is currently the Managing Director of 9X Media, was admitted to the association’s Hall of Fame with the lifetime achievement award.

Professional responsibility is key: Pradeep Guha

    Pradeep Guha

I am honoured to have received this award. I have worked more than 30 years in the Media profession encompassing print, television and now the internet…I have travelled a long distance and whenever possible I have contributed a lot to the industry because I believe you cannot be just taking things from the industry but you have to return it back as well. If people talk about CSR in the corporate space then one should focus on professional responsibility as well. That’s what I have been doing in my career.

The award is a very good initiative and I am glad that they made it on such a large scale in the first year itself. Typically, when something starts big it tends to grow bigger.

My advice to the industry, especially the younger generation is try and be the best in the world. Not just best among your friends or in the industry or in India; but the best in the world. When I was in the Times of India I used to look up to New York Times and say: I want to be bigger than NY Times. Unless you benchmark something very large and almost unachievable then there’s nowhere to go.

The International Advertising Association (IAA) is the world’s only globally-focused integrated advertising trade association with membership representing advertisers, agencies and the media. Research major The Nielsen Company and consulting firm Ernst & Young were associated with the event that was organised and sponsored by the Colors general entertainment channel.

Popular television artist Mini Mathur emceed the evening as the fraternity was welcomed by IAA’s India chapter president Srinivasan K Swamy and Colors CEO Raj Nayak. In his address, the I&B minister asked the industry to mull over pressing issues like ad duration in channels, effective viewership measurement, adding that the government will not institute any regulations without consulting the industry. “As an industry, advertising has done generally well for itself and it has been one of the beneficiaries of liberalisation and has bloomed well over the years,” Mr Tewari said. “What needs to be kept in mind going forward is that the limit of statutory regulation should be respected because when we respect the law and maintain equilibrium, maintain harmony between creativity, provocation and restrain are we able to get the best and give the best.”

Also amongst the winners was Bollywood actor Salman Khan who reportedly made his first ever appearance at an awards function. The actor, on a high with brands queuing to sign him, bagged the award for the Brand Endorser of the Year – Male. Katrina Kaif was awarded Brand Endorser of the Year – Female.

Marketers from across 12 categories were among the awardwinners as also were Editor of the Year (Jaideep Bose) and News Anchor of the Year (Rajdeep Sardesai). Shobhana Bhartia, chairperson of  HT Media, was awarded the Mediaperson of the Year award. The table alongside has the list of winners.

  • IAA Leadership Awards: Stage set for big night for Indian media & marketing

    By A Correspondent

All roads will lead to the Grand Hyatt tomorrow. Situated in what’s the new centre of Mumbai, the hotel will play host to the first ever awards for the country’s marketing, advertising and media fraternity. Organised by the India chapter of the International Advertising Association, there are 19 categories, nominees for most of which have been announced.

    Manish Tewari

I&B Minister Manish Tewari is the Chief Guest and he will give away the awards. Colors is the sponsor of the awards. The awards presentation will be followed by a party celebrating four years of the channel.

Although the organizers haven’t revealed too much about the entertainment acts during the show or who is going to emcee the evening, what we do know is that some of the biggest stars in Bollywood and television will be in attendance. As of course all the people who matter in the media, advertising and marketing fraternity.

    IAA’s commitment to the cause:

    Srinivasan K Swamy

Over the years, the IAA has indeed been spearheading activities towards the environment and sustainability. Said IAA President Srinivasan Swamy: “The IAA in India has always organized marquee events. Events that are not just big, but also meaningful. Many will remember the Lighting a Billion Lives campaign we created and ran to create awareness and raise money to install solar lamps in dark villages all over India as a part of Dr Rajendra Pachauri’s project. Many have been a part of the Olive Crown Awards for we launched two years ago. These remain India’s only awards for excellence in communicating sustainability.

We have recently launched a large gender sensitization program which consists of a seminar to create awareness about gender nuances amongst content creators and a national communication campaign on the evils of eve-teasing  and we will roll it out soon. We see it as our duty to ourselves and to the women in our country. I believe all these initiatives endorse IAA¹s commitment to the communications industry and to society in general.

In a similar vein, IAA Leadership Awards is a major initiative. These awards salute the most distinguished from the marketing, media and advertising functions… the silent warriors, who had made their companies and brands rich and famous.

This is the first year of the IAA Leadership Awards and I am extremely pleased with the overwhelming response we have received from the industry. There may have been some categories we may have missed out this time due to time constraints like Digital, Radio etc and hopefully we will include it in Year 2.

I must add that we found in Colors a great partner to not only finance this important initiative but to put their entire organizational weight behind marshaling the event and sweating out the million details. We are very grateful to Raj Nayak and his tireless team.

    Raj Nayak

Said Raj Nayak on the eve of the event, “This is an award that the India chapter of the IAA had always wanted to do. The idea was seeded  almost a year-and-a-half ago when Kaushik Roy was the President, and Sunder the vice-president. The IAA board has been fully behind this initiative and the only thing that stood in the way was the resource to make this a reality. We at Colors saw this as a great opportunity for us to engage with our all the stakeholders of our industry and use this platform to bring the entire industry under one roof. Besides senior  professionals from advertising, marketing and media, the evening will be followed by a Colors party wherein we will also have the film and TV fraternity rubbing shoulders with the corporate world.”

So is it a one-off sponsorship or a longer commitment? “We have a long term association with the IAA for this initiative and we plan to dovetail the Colors party along with it to make it an annual event,” said Mr Nayak, adding that his only regret is that “after these awards I may become a little unpopular as given the capacity constraint of the venue we had to limit our invitations and have had to say no to so many requests.”

The organizers also point out the “wholehearted” support they’ve received from the fraternity. Apart from ads and mailers from trade sites such as MxMIndia, the print, television and outdoor media has also helped promote the event. “Honestly, the support we have got from or friends in media, whether it is TV, print or trade websites, the response has been fantastic. I am truly grateful to all of them,” said Mr Nayak.

Meanwhile, the IAA has released nominees for another 5 categories of Leadership Awards

The International Advertising Association (IAA) India chapter has announced the nominees for another five categories for the first edition of the IAA Leadership Awards. The nominees have been shortlisted on account of their outstanding contribution to the fields of Marketing, Advertising and Media.

Besides the below, IAA has also constituted special six categories for Editor of the year, News Anchor of the year, Mediaperson of the year, the Brand Endorser of the year (Male and Female) and the IAA Hall of Fame.

  • Colors is presenting sponsor for IAA Leadership Awards

    By A Correspondent

The International Advertising Association’s (IAA) India chapter has roped in general entertainment channel Colors as the Presenting Sponsor for the first ever IAA Leadership Awards to be held in Mumbai on February 2.

The IAA Leadership Awards celebrates individual innovative thinking and performance excellence. The awards also seek to acknowledge the fact that the disciplines of marketing, advertising and media have to come together for the brand’s success, by having all three functional disciplines honoured simultaneously.

Talking about this association Raj Nayak, CEO Colors said, “As an organization we have always supported industry initiatives, for example we recently sponsored The Advertising Club’s Effies. This is yet another step in that direction.  This is the first time when marketing professionals and advertising professionals from both disciplines (creative and media) and professionals from Media (Print TV, Radio, Digital etc) will come under one roof to honour excellence across all the three, and we are extremely happy and excited to be a part of this initiative by the IAA.”

Speaking about the association with Colors, IAA president Srinivasan Swamy said, “The IAA Leadership Awards salutes the brilliance of top professionals whose contribution makes our industry what it is. Colors is a respectable and one of the fastest growing media brands and we are extremely grateful and happy that they have come forward to support this initiative. The awards night promises to be a memorable one with top entertainment and celebrations. I am also very grateful to the Honourable Minister for Information & Broadcasting, Mr Manish Tiwari, for agreeing to be our chief guest for the awards night.”

  • Jaldi 5 with Srinivasan K Swamy: IAA awards will recognize successful marketers, agency and media professionals

The International Advertising Association’s India chapter announced the IAA Leadership Awards yesterday (Monday, December 17). The objective of the awards is to recognize individuals in the fields of marketing, advertising and media, who have made enormous professional contributions and delivered business success to their companies. The inaugural awards are to be held in February 2013 with I&B Minister Manish Tewari as Chief Guest.

In an interview with MxMIndia, Srinivasan K Swamy, President of International Advertising Association and CMD, RK Swamy BBDO, spoke on the awards, the intent behind them and how they will be different from the others.

    01. Personality awards always get ‘political’. Why did the IAA get into this activity?

Company or Brand Awards do not recognize adequately  individual’s contribution. If the process is transparent, which is what we will ensure through Nielsen research team and audit by Ernst & Young of that, we believe we can avoid all controversies. The IAA membership comprises individuals from advertisers, advertising agencies and the media. It is therefore most appropriate that IAA honours individuals from these related fields in a common platform.

    02. How will you ensure that every one from amongst the fraternity participates in the voting?

There can be no guarantee that everyone will vote. But efforts will be on to ensure that many votes will be gathered to ascertain the true winner in the chosen category.

    03. In many ways, the award appears to be quite like the Impact Person of the Year award, run by the exchange4media group. The selection process is similar. They had AC Nielsen earlier and now IMRB. You have Nielsen. IAA of course has E&Y to audit and validate the process. Your comments?

The Impact Person of the Year chooses only one individual. We will have many CMO winners from various marketing categories, best advertiser CEO, best creative agency CEO, best media agency CEO, best news anchor, best news editor etc. We believe there has been no attempt so far to bring so many successful marketers, agency personnel and media people together and applaud their outstanding contribution.

    04.  Will there be a ‘lifetime achievement award’ too?

There will be a Lifetime Achievement Award. More on that on the awards night!

The AAAI used to have one, but it appears to have discontinued…?

    AAAI has not discontinued it.

    05. On a lighter note, why did you award Nielsen and not Hansa for the initial research process?

Isn’t it obvious?  Why create an impression of conflict of interest?

  • IAA sets up leadership awards for media, ad & marketing professionals

    By A Correspondent

The International Advertising Association’s (IAA) India chapter today announced the establishment of the IAA Leadership Awards to recognize individuals in the fields of Marketing, Advertising and Media, who have made enormous professional contributions and delivered business success to their companies.

These Awards will be given annually and the first edition is scheduled for February 2013 in Mumbai. Manish Tewari, Union Minister of State (independent charge) of Information and Broadcasting will be the Chief Guest. Over 500 senior marketing, advertising and media professionals from across the country are expected to attend.

The IAA Leadership Awards will celebrate an individual’s innovative thinking and performance excellence that lead to outstanding success of the product/brand. The Awards also indirectly seeks to acknowledge the fact that the disciplines of marketing, advertising and media have to come together for the brand’s success, by having all three functional disciplines awarded simultaneously.

    Srinivasan Swamy

Talking about the awards, Srinivasan Swamy, President of International Advertising Association said, “The IAA Leadership Awards salutes the brilliance of top professionals whose contribution makes our industry what it is. These annual awards, over time will be seen as the most coveted recognition an industry practitioner will receive for all his hard work and leadership qualities, that brought about success to the product/brand.”

To ensure that the recipients’ of the awards are determined in a fair and just manner and to ensure the process is seen as transparent, IAA has appointed the experienced marketing research company A C Nielsen to execute the nomination and voting process. Further Ernst & Young has been appointed to audit and validate the entire process. The winners will be decided in a two-stage selection process; the first stage will include nominations and shortlisting by seasoned marketing, media and advertising professionals; and the second stage will be the final selection of winners by a voting process among the shortlisted nominees, by respective senior industry peers.
