  • RBNL expands Big Magic footprint across HSMs

    By A Correspondent

It started off as an entertainment channel for the Hindi heartland pockets in central, northern and eastern India. After having tasted some success, it started a localized channel for Bihar and Jharkhand. And, now, the channel is extending its footprint across what’s known as the Hindi-speaking Market.

In order to do this, it has entered into arrangement with key cable networks and DTH players across the regions reaching out to 123 mn households across the HSMs.

Speaking on the occasion, Sunil Kumaran, Business Head, Language TV said, “Over the last two years, Big Magic has built itself into a powerful regional brand with a loyal audience base. While we invested in building a strong brand, we are now ready to take it to its next level of growth and reach. The timing couldn’t be more perfect with Phase @ of digitization pointing at an opportunity to reach our content to millions of Indians. Our robust distribution network and insight-backed programming ensures we offer audiences an entertainment avenue that will resonate excellently with them.”

The channel was launched in April 2011 and has a mainstream Hindi GEC-like content mix with family dramas, sitcoms crime shows, reality shows, weekend movies et al.

While the channel proposes an extensive multiple media marketing push, the effort is to evolve into the bigger league. Reliance Broadcast Network is banking big on the complete roll-out of Phase 2 of digitization and later the final phase for growing the Big Magic franchise.

Meanwhile, viewers in Bihar and Jharkhand will continue to receive both the local and national feeds of Big Magic.

  • Rooted in the region worked for Big Magic: Sunil Kumaran

It’s celebration time at the headquarters of Reliance Broadcast Network Limited (RBNL), also known as the Big TV network. Big Magic, the GEC which marked the entry of RBNL into the regional entertainment space, completed two years of existence last week. Positioned as a regional General Entertainment Channel (GEC) for the Hindi heartland of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, it features family dramas, crime shows, reality shows and weekend blockbuster movies. MxMIndia posed a few questions to Sunil Kumaran, Business Head, Regional Channels at RBNL to get a better idea of how Big Magic has done since its launch in 2011.

Congratulations on Big Magic turning two. Two years for any media entity implies that it’s here to stay. Would you say that for Big Magic?

The two-year journey has been stupendous and extremely encouraging. We started with the belief that there is an opportunity in the market for a regional player offering meaningful content which is relevant and has a deeper connect with consumers.

This belief has been endorsed by our strong performance and consistent growth in the market. Over the last two years, we have launched some marquee shows like Big Bal Kalakaar, Police Files, Pyaar Ya Dehshat, Khul Ka Sim Sim, Big Memsaab and more, each of these resonating local sentiments and entertainment preferences.

Encouraged by our success in this market, we have also ventured into launching Big Magic – Bihar and Jharkhand, with shows tailored to suit these markets.

For those not in the know, could you tell us what have been the highs and lows for the channel?

What worked for us was the localization of the shows and our radio network strength, which allowed us to amplify quickly and gave us speed to market.

How is it managing in a world where the big GECs, big movie channels and big sporting events occupy mindspace. In that world how big Magic weave its magic?

Big Magic’s unique proposition is the fact that it is rooted in the region. The programming team is based out of the region and has a much better understanding of the nuances of the local populace.

GECs are challenged with their ability to provide relevant content for specific markets. For us, what works is that we are focused on a particular market and our ability to offer tailored content is significantly higher.

How have advertisers taken to the channel?

We have all the large national as well as regional/ local advertisers on the channel, ranging FMCG, consumer durables, auto, BFSI, SME’s and more…

We’ve had channels like Dabbang already in existence before you came in… so do you think you’ve had a second mover advantage?

There was no channel offering variety entertainment content in this space and most of the others operated in the infotainment space. We actually had the advantage to be the first to offer a holistic entertainment channel for the first time for the region.

Khul Ja Sim Sim has been a huge success. There were hundreds of people who wrote to us at MxMIndia requesting for access to the show. You’ve said that it’s been the turning point for your channel… Talk us through how it has been the turning point? And life after that (for the channel?)

KJSS was an adaptation of the popular international format Let’s Make a Deal. We bought the rights and adapted it for the region. The game show caters to the entire family and being the first of its kind for the region, the response received has been over-whelming. We brought in the original Indian host Aman Varma to host the show and we also invested in marketing the show aggressively across the state of Uttar Pradesh. This has managed to create a huge traction for the show and the channel.

Have all the distribution hassles been eased? Would you say digitization in the Phase 2 will be of some help?

We were very clear right from the beginning, that distribution, for a regional channel like ours is extremely critical and had ensured that we are available across all major platforms right from launch. With digitization, we are now available in all the regional digital platforms too.

What plans for the year ahead?

We will build on our franchises like Big Memsaab, KJSS, Big Fame Star and also venture strongly into the fiction space. You will hear of some exciting new announcements shortly.

  • Crime pays for GECs

    By Meghna Sharma

What is it about the dark side that attracts us? A glance over any newspaper or news channel will tell us the increased attention being given to the gruesome incidents.

The media, especially the television which is a reflection of the society, has reflected this growing interest with the increasing popularity in the number of the unglamorous, and sometimes, gory crime shows. From Karamchand in the 80s on DD to the latest Gumraah on Channel V, most crime shows have done well and have been able to garner an interest that other genres might not be able to. The longest running show on the Indian television, CID, is a crime show which was started in 1998 and recently turned tri-weekly.

Speaking about the show’s success, Sneha Rajani, senior EVP and business head, Sony Television, said: “CID has been doing well for years now; it’s not a recent phenomenon. On an average, the show gets TVR of 3.3-3.5, and sometimes even goes up to 4.5. So, it’s no surprise that show has its share of viewers, as week after week people switch on their TV sets to get inspired by the bravery and the relentless passion of CID against crime.”

    Popular Crime Shows

    Karamchand – 1980 – DD

    CID – 1998 – Sony

    India’s Most Wanted – 1999 – Zee

    Aadalat – 2010 – Sony

    Gumrah – 2012 – Channel V

According to industry experts, most GEC experiments with crime shows have been successful – some have garnered a little interest and others have gone on to become national hits like Adaalat and India’s Most Wanted.

Such crime shows consist of an economically viable format – no huge sets, no major actors, no glamorous outfits or expensive judges are required – hence, the channels don’t mind investing in them.

    Janardhan Pandey

Janardhan Pandey, associate vice president, DDB Mudra Max feels that apart from reality shows, only crime shows have the ability to create sensationalism and that’s the main reason people are attracted towards the format. “People want to know what’s happening around them. And these shows are able to portray facts through dramatization, without costing too much for the channel.”

‘Curiosity killed the cat’ is the apt reason why crime shows work on television according to Anand Chakravarthy, executive vice president, Marketing, RBNL and business head, Big Magic. “Crime, as a genre, has an extremely wide appeal, irrespective of the country. In a developing nation likeIndiawhere crime and corruption are a part of the societal fabric, the audience is most likely to appreciate televised content in the genre.”

    Anand Chakravarthy

He added: “The fascination with the morbid and intrigue that the genre provides work across a cross section of audience, regardless of age and gender, making it acceptable to a larger and diverse audience base.”

However, the question which still arises is – aren’t such shows the figment of the writers’ imagination? The writers of such shows may choose to disagree about the authenticity. “Though some might say they are a writer’s figment of imagination, but in reality, newspaper reports, sometimes even FIRs and investigations done by channels help us gather facts and details about various cases,” said a writer with a national GEC.

According to Priti Murthy, national director – Insights, Maxus, crime shows attract not only the middle-aged, but a large number of youth too. “Crime cuts across genres and finds a large number of youngsters hooked on to the genre like action, thriller, and crime. One could say it gives them adrenaline rush.”

    Prem Kamath

Channel V recently launched a teen crime show, Gumraah, which has became popular for its disruptive format and unique viewpoint of understanding the psyche of young criminals. “V’s Gumrah, in its second season now, details the ecosystem in which a teen crime is conceived and the extraordinary circumstances that lead to it. The show has had an immense impact on us, in terms of viewership as well as vindicating our research and understanding of the youth. We have seen a tremendous response in terms of feedback and appreciation on social media and other consumer responses. It has also further encouraged us to try bolder formats and continue on our chosen content strategy,” said Prem Kamath, Executive VP and GM, Channel V.

Most crime shows do attract a large number of eyeballs, but most GECs also claim that it’s not about entertainment alone; they are helping the society as well. “As for adults, and specifically parents, this show is an eye-opener: if one neglects their child’s need for attention or dismiss it as juvenile behaviour, it can have serious repercussions and lead to moment of madness, eternally irreversible,” added Mr Kamath.

“Shows such as Police Files (aired on Big Magic), while showcasing crimes from the region, also attempt to educate and empower the viewer. The depiction of the crimes help the viewers to understand and accept the need to be vigilant in safeguarding themselves and their loved ones. The information imparted by way of applicable laws of the Indian Penal Code, safety tips by experts and NGOs help empower the viewer,” said Mr Chakravarthy.

So, if one has to go by what industry experts have to say: it’s entertainment with awareness that makes one switch on their television sets to watch crime shows.  Whatever be the reason, the channels can surely say that ‘crime pays’!
