  • The Social Consciousness of Advertising Agencies

The Social Consciousness of Advertising Agencies

Ashoke AgarrwalMany think of advertising people as hustlers. A few voice their opinions with wit; for example, the comedian Steven Wright said, “I saw a subliminal advertising executive, but only for a second. ”

Those of us in advertising know that the average advertising man is only as unscrupulous as the average human being.

There are many reasons for the societal image of advertising people. Though advertising, by and large, plays a valuable role in society as a source of helpful information and entertainment, most people, at one time or another, have been seared by it at the personal level, consciously through the post-purchase dissonance that they blame at advertising’s door. And subconsciously because the lifestyle much of the advertising portrays makes them dissatisfied with their circumstances.

Another reason was the glamour associated with advertising a few decades ago. Advertising no longer has that problem as it has shifted from brand custodians peopled by stars to quotidian vendors largely peopled by drones.

Beyond the general populace’s extant image of advertising people, the pertinent issue is the advertising profession’s societal responsibility. At its core, advertising is a profession with highly specialised skills as much as the practice of medicine and the law are professions. I would even include politics as a profession. The issue is that the professions of medicine, law, accounting, architecture and engineering are codified and guided by a stated or unstated set of rules; soft professions like politics, advertising and management are not. The harm done to societies worldwide by having the profession of politics open to all and governed only by the mandate of “anything goes in politics” is evident.

Management and advertising, on the other hand, are answerable to stakeholders and the rigours of the market, and even without codification, a relatively tight set of rules and guidelines has evolved.

What, then, are advertising’s societal responsibilities? Mark Twain once said in jest (I hope) that advertising is legalised lying. Anyone who has been in advertising knows that consumers and markets are brutal masters and will weed out those who think advertising works because it fools people. Advertising works because it is based on the consumer’s deeply held conscious and subconscious attitudes and beliefs and seeks to effect behaviour aligning with these beliefs.

The advertising profession’s speciality is in unearthing beliefs and attitudes and crafting arresting messages that align with these beliefs and attitudes in suggesting or reinforcing an action.

Commercial advertising does not attempt to change underlying beliefs and attitudes because doing so would require budgets far beyond the commercially viable range. Instead, it addresses an existing set of beliefs and attitudes most conducive to its commercial objectives.

Advertising, in its commercial sense, is value-agnostic. If a deeply held belief in a vital section of the audience that driving a fast car is a symbol of sexual potency, then advertising will run with it. If being woke about gender equality or secular values is a strong belief in another section, advertising will run it no matter whether it is for a detergent or jewellery brand.

Advertising plays a societal role in enabling a consumerist society, a central pillar of modern economies. It also subsidises media – mass, digital and social – and thus enables the cultural and communication milieu of societies.

However, the advertising profession can go beyond its commercial role and use its unique skills to do good to society more directly.

Advertising can do in the societal space what it is wrongly accused of doing in the commercial space. It can zero in on beliefs and attitudes that harm individuals and societies and change them with the right messaging and level of persistent exposure.

Such advertising, blandly known as Public Service Advertising (PSA), is currently reduced to a hoax category at advertising award functions. Advertising that juiced up creatives let rip on issues and causes they barely understand.

Decades ago, when advertising agencies sat at the business and marketing high tables and had a different image of themselves, the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAA of I) devoted some of their resources to creating effective PSA campaigns and persuaded the media to give them meaningful exposure. One worthy recently told me that they could not think of such activities nowadays as the agencies fight for their existence in the age of Google, Facebook, ad tech, and now, God forbid AI.

Au contraire, wouldn’t creating powerful PSA campaigns that improve societies’ dynamics be the best way to revive recognition of the high art of advertising and, thus, the prestige and influence of advertising agencies? Wouldn’t traditional and digital media wholeheartedly support such an effort because they, too, are under existential pressure?

Time was when Doordarshan was the only TV channel in the country, Kailash Surendranath and Suresh Mallik got together to create the inimitable “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara” campaign – the ultimate PSA for its time.

The world is much more complex today, so PSAs must dig deeper. My decades of campaign planning experience have taught me that the more complicated the problem and the deeper you dig, you come up with a startlingly simple solution. For example, one of the critical problems facing societies today is increasing tribalism, the deep division of societies into “Us and Them” factions based on politics, religion, ethnicity, age and class. At the surface level, the reasons are complex, and tackling each cause of division individually is intractable. But dig deeper; the core cause is losing the ability to listen universally and without a filter. To do so would not just create a lowering of barriers between individuals but would make life richer and more meaningful for each individual. The advertising planners and creatives will dive deep and unearth those beliefs and attitudes that prevent listening and those latent ones that can support listening and create messaging that negates one set and reinforces the other.

The above is just one illustrative example of how deep a PSA can go.

To reassert, advertising agencies can find the high table again if they deploy their unique skills to address society’s urgent psychographic needs. Let’s think of this as a core business development strategy.

  • Second edition of ‘I Lead’ survey alunched

    By Our Staff

We have our views on the Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry but must say that its PR & Digital Marketing National Council, one of the 150-plus Councils the association has, is superactive. The Council has launched the second edition of the ‘I Lead’ Women Leadership Survey. The Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) and Public Relations Consultants Association of India (PRCAI) have joined hands with WICCI to support this survey, notes a communique

Prof Akshaya Vijaylakshmi, Associate Professor, Marketing, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), has been onboarded as Knowledge Partner for the initiative. Said Prof Vijaylakshmi: “We talk about how it takes a village to raise a child but what we also need is an organization to come together to help a mother not just stay at work but also succeed and grow in the firm. This is just one example. The ‘I Lead’ Women Leadership Survey by WICCI aims to get a wholesome understanding of what organizations are doing to help women thrive. This survey is the much needed roadmap that we need for the future.”

Announcing the launch of the survey, Kavita Lakhani, National President of WICCI PR & Digital Marketing Council said, “It is a known fact that gender equality is key to unlocking greater chances for women to prosper at leadership positions. Through the ‘I Lead’ Women Leadership Survey, we will attempt to understand from CXOs of communications firms firstly on how much they believe in providing equal opportunities, equal respect and equal empowerment.  Secondly what is their formula for an equal future – specific programmes, partnerships and policies within their organization – all designed to support women and to break down any barriers to recruitment, retention, development and leadership.” The  survey can be taken on mobile.  The survey link www.enswype.com.

  • Ramesh Narayan inducted into AFAA Hall of Fame 2021

    By Our Staff

    Ramesh Narayan
    Ramesh Narayan

At the inaugural session of the prestigious AdAsia conference being held at Macao, Ramesh Narayan was inducted into the AFAA Hall of Fame, 2021.

Earlier, outgoing Chairman of AFAA, Raymond So said: “the AFAA Hall of Fame sets out to recognize the best of the very best. Ramesh Narayan is a legend who has the ability to look past what’s good enough and focus on making everything better than it has to be”.

He read out a citation that outlined the highlights of an illustrious career studded with almost all the national and global awards in the advertising industry, leadership positions in all the relevant Indian marcom industry associations, the contribution he has made to many social causes, his belief in using communication as a force for good and above all, for his integrity, truthfulness, effective communication skills, and his unique way of winning friends and influencing people.

In his brief acceptance speech, Narayan said: “I’d like to thank AFAA and all my friends across Asia for this huge honor bestowed on me. Around 23 years ago, I was invited by my friend Pradeep Guha (you see I don’t say the late Pradeep Guha, because he lives in our minds and in our hearts) to join the AFAA movement and help make a bid to bring the AdAsia to India. This culminated in the AdAsia 2003 Jaipur. However, for me it was an introduction to industry work, as against only my own Agency work, and that experience is ongoing. I’d like to acknowledge the immense work done by all the architects of AFAA and to accept this honour on behalf of all of them.

“I’d like to talk a little about our industry. I have had the amazing experience to be a part of an industry that keeps the wheels of our economies moving. That ensures more employment across the world. That gives individuals the right to choose. That educates, and entertains and spreads awareness.

“However, I feel all this pales into insignificance before the power of this industry to help rid the world of diseases like polio. To raise money and combat calamities across the world, to help raise our collective voices for the environment and elder care and gender equality. And against domestic violence and animal abuse.

“Can you think of any other industry that can claim to do all these things? Yes, my friends. That is the real power we as an industry wield. And that is what I call communication as a force for good.

“And I urge more of us to think of our industry in this way.. And to make time for work like this. And show that what’s  good, is good for industry.

“And so I stand here today, honoured and humbled.”

Narayan has been President of the Advertising Club, The Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI), the India Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA), Chairman of the Awards Governing Council of the Abby awards at GoaFest. He has been honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the AAAI, named Global Champion by the IAA, the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association of Business Communicators of India (ABCI), presented with a Special award by the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI) and inducted into the IAA India Chapter Hall of Fame. He has been president of the Rotary Club of Bombay, and the recipient of several Rotary awards.

Since the AdAsia was being held as a virtual event, a unique hybrid event was held in Mumbai to present the AFAA awards.

Pradeep Guha was posthumously inducted into the AFAA Hall of Fame for 2019 and his wife Papia Guha accepted the award.

Srinivasan Swamy was presented the AFAA Special Merit Award for 2019.

  • Rediffusion toasts ex-employees in campaign to celebrates 50 Years

    By Our Staff

Surprise! Surprise! An ad released by Rediffusion last week features Mullen Lowe Lintas India’s Group CEO, Virat Tandon. In fact Tandon is the hero of the ad. Why?

Because Rediffusion is starting its ‘50 Years’ celebration, 24 months in advance. And every month over the next 24 months, Rediffusion will release an ad celebrating a former employee who has gone on to achieve success and fame in advertising, and beyond. Virat Tandon, who joined Rediffusion in 1993 as an Account Executive in their Delhi office and worked on Caltex, AT&T, Sony, Shell and Atlas Cycles, has the honour of being the first to be featured in his alma mater’s celebratory campaign.

Explains Diwan Arun Nanda, Chairman & Founder of Rediffusion:  “Rediffusion has a proud history not just of the clients and brands it has handled over the past 48 years, but also the talented professionals who worked at Rediffusion over the years and left their indelible stamp on the agency. This campaign celebrates our stars who spent some part of their professional innings at Rediffusion, and then moved on to attain stature and esteem in the ad industry, media, movies, academia, and more. This campaign toasts their success, and thanks them for having been part of Rediffusion’s incredible journey of nearly five decades,”

The second ad in the series features Kamlesh Pandey, who has recently come back to the agency as Legend In Residence. Pandey joined Rediffusion in the mid-70s and was the most awarded Copywriter of that era – with iconic lines like “Whenever you see colour, think of us” for Jenson & Nicholson, “Hum Red & White peene walon ki baat hi kuchh aur hai” for Red & White cigarettes, “The Zing Thing” for Gold Spot that made him famous. Pandey went on to head programming at Zee and is well known as a Bollywood script writer, including penning films like Rang de Basanti.

Some of the ad industry’s biggest stalwarts have worked at Rediffusion. From Harsha Bhogle who joined the agency in client servicing straight from IIM Ahmedabad, and went on to become a famous cricket commentator, to India’s current cricket team coach Ravi Shastri who headed Showdiff, Refiffusion has many famous alumni. The current President of the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI), Anupriya Acharya worked at Rediffusion over a decade ago. India’s No. 1 media man, Prashanth Kumar, the CEO of Group M started as a rookie in media at Rediffusion nearly 25 years ago. Actor Rahul Bose headed creative at Rediffusion Mumbai in the mid-90s while celebrated Creative Director Bobby Pawar too spent some of his younger days at Rediffusion’s Readymoney office writing copy. Havas’ Country Head Rana Barua and Times of India’s President Partha Sinha are both Rediffusionists.”

Added Dr. Sandeep Goyal, Managing Director of Rediffusion: “So sparkling is our galaxy of superstars that choosing just 24 to feature in the campaign is going to be a tough task. I worked with Virat Tandon when I was Branch Head of Rediffusion Delhi. It is so satisfying to see Rediffusion youngsters like Virat bloom into leaders of the industry. Rediffusion has been a veritable University of Indian Advertising and we are proud to be celebrating our contribution through this communication.”

The campaign has been ideated and written by Pramod Sharma, Executive Creative Director, Rediffusion Mumbai.

  • AAAI issues statement on the Tanishq ad controversy

The Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI), the apex body of advertising agencies in the country, has announced its disapproval of the targeting of the recent Tanishq ad featuring an inter-faith couple. “The threats against Tanishq as well as its employees, which led to the withdrawal of the advertisement, are a matter of great regret and concern.”

Adds the communique: “The advertisement in question, in fact, had been viewed at the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) by an independent panel- The Consumer Complaints Council, which is representative of multiple stakeholders from industry, civil society, lawyers and consumer activists. The panel found nothing in the advertisement that was indecent or objectionable or repulsive that could lead to grave and widespread offence. There is a consensus among all allied bodies and The International Advertising Association (IAA) India Chapter and The Advertising Club also support this.”

The pandemic has only underscored the relevance of the collective thinking and the heightened role that AAAI can play. I will strive to do my best to further the interests of the advertising industry and take AAAI to greater heights as we emerge into the new normal. Many top advertising professionals have contributed very selflessly and relentlessly to the AAAI, both with and without executive positions. And that is what inspires me immensely as I take on this position. Many thanks to Ashish Bhasin for his leadership in the last two years as President – he has made great progress in making the association more inclusive, diverse and future-ready. Also, thanks to all the Executive committee members and the secretariat for all the learning they have given me in the past many years”.
