  • Abhita Anand : Business Director – MEC Access, Group M

    (Experience: 10 years)

“Necessity never made a good bargain,” said Benjamin Franklin, but Abhita Anand chose to differ. At 18, when most girls were deciding on what dress and makeup to wear to college, Abhita was busy converting the challenge of a life without her father in an opportunity to chart her career – a decision that made a difference to her and her family’s life.

Abhita started her career as a front desk representative in one of the most recognized and esteemed organization in fashion industry – not only in India but worldwide – Elite Model Management, India. Recognizing her potential and immense inclination to move forward, Elite gave her an opportunity that Abhita was not ready to let go, at any cost. Within a year, Abhita was handling the modeling school and was responsible for business development and targets for its Delhi branch.

It was Elite where Abhita started handling the PR and ad division work for Elite. It did not take long for Abhita, with her business acumen, to realize the potential of the last mile communication and she started the events division in Elite.

Juggling her education and work, Abhita completed her MBA in marketing and finance from Fore School Of Management to correlate the management gyan and its real life application. Some of the key projects Abhita handled at TOI were WagonR ‘Think Big Challenge’ and Met Life ‘I want to be an editor’. She delivered beautifully, making the clients come back to the organization year after year.

  • Akanksha Jain: Partner, Business Planning at MindShare

    (Experience: 10 years)

What Akanksha Jain values the most is to be true to everything she does and to herself. And she does that by ensuring that she has given nothing short of 100per cent.

Explaining her motivation, Akanksha said: “What drives me is the selfish desire to make a mark; essentially leave everything better than I found it! I wanted to be in the ‘Communications’ industry long before I even understood what it entailed and that’s what led me to MICA.”

She has ‘dabbled’ with account management for about a year at the start of her career, but didn’t follow through as she felt that the well-honed left part of her brain wasn’t getting enough exercise! “I was attracted to media and joined what was then a 3-member team (Pepsi @ Mindshare) to try my hand at it. That I am still here is thanks to the constant excitement and challenges that have engaged both parts of my brain.”

  • @Goafest, Taproot emerges tall. And how!

When Big Dad of Indian advertising Ogilvy pockets 51 metals at Creative Abbys at the Goafest 2012, it is something that one expects, so no surprise here really. But when a three-year-old agency goes on to become the runner-up, leaving behind the much settled Leo Burnett, DDB Mudra, Grey and JWT, it is indeed a proud moment for Indian advertising. It says that all is not lost and what still matters in the advertising business is creativity and if you have the ingredients right then there’s no one to stop you from writing your success story. Taproot India and its founders Agnello Dias and Santosh Padhi have shown the industry the might of small and given hope to many aspirants on the same path.

Talking about Taproot’s success, Agnello Dias said: “It’s been great, a satisfying feeling, but it is also slightly scary because we have got to do even better than last year as expectations have gone up, but as of now, we are just happy that we have performed well at the awards.”

On Taproot missing out on the Grand Prix as there were huge expectations from Airtel campaign, Santosh Padhi said: “Yes, a lot of people said that our Airtel or Pepsi campaign would win us a Grand Prix, so I think that itself is a Grand Prix for us. Therefore, we have no grudge and we are happy with the way things have turned out for us. And definitely there were two strong competitors against us for the Grand Prix.”

    The victorious Ogilvy team

The most awarded work at the Goafest was for  brands, including The Times of India, Volkswagen India and Airtel. Even for Ogilvy India, the work that fetched them maximum awards was for Fox Crime. Also the work that got CreativeLand Asia its Grand Prix in the Integrated category was for Audi 8L 3D.

TOI’s ‘Wake Up Chennai’ (that fetched accolades at Goafest) has been embroiled in controversy as it spoofed its rival, The Hindu. the ad showed how reading the old player (read The Hindu) puts people to sleep and the readers should wake up to something more exciting – The Times of India. The ad was crafted by Taproot which also created Airtel’s Har Friend Zaroori Hai that fetched many awards for the agency across various categories. In fact, Har Friend… can be dubbed among the most popular campaigns of the year.

    A happy Creativeland Asia team

Ogilvy’s work for Fox Crime titled The Photographs case, made by Good Morning, is in keeping with the genre of the channel and creates a mini thriller for its audience, building anticipation for what to expect on the channel. Talking about the wins, Abhijit Avasthi, NCD, O&M said: “It’s been a great year as always and I think the best part is that we have done well in every category, from design to direct to digital to integrated. Obviously there are some works where one wishes we had got more recognition, like the Cadbury in home campaign, but, overall, we are very happy. I think we have got the best clients who allow us to do really some very interesting work.”

“It’s very reassuring that we have managed to win the Grand Prix back to back and this year I hold the digital grand prix to a greater importance, simply because it demolishes the myth of lots of clients that digital is something big network agencies cannot do,” he added.

Volkswagen, which brought awards to DDB Mudra, Grey India and Nomad Films, is a brand that has caught attention because of its innovative use of media since its launch inIndia. While the fraternity may not have lauded all the innovations that Volkswagen did, but it cannot be disputed that the work did catch the attention of the people and fraternity.

However, if one were to look at the Creative Abbys 2012, it will be remembered for Taproot India, which carved a name for itself among the behemoths, only because of its creative supremacy. More power to all those who want to chart their own path and keep in mind that great ideas zaroori hai and the rest will follow. Right, sirji?

  • Rohini Gauthaman: General Manager – North At Media Direction Rk Swamy

    (Work experience: 9 years)

She has a better way to soak in extra knowledge; an attribute she feels sets her apart from her peers. Avers Gauthaman: “There is so much of information one can gather by just listening! And that is precisely what I do most often. I love to listen to people, analyze reaction when spoken, interpret gestures and expression which I believe usually talks more than words!”

But besides being an avid listener, an amateur cake baker and an animal lover (do minus the lizard and the cockroach variety!!), Gauthaman’s main area of focus is media planning. A major portion of her time in a day is spent towards her role as GM while her remaining time is spent with arguments & discussions with her husband, focusing on re-educating herself with her class 7 son and in disturbing her lazy sleepy dog.

Gauthaman did her MA in English Literature (Central University, Hyderabad) and took up towards Advertising Management as a career option. She specialized into the profession by doing a course from MICA. As she puts it: “And so, putting words to numbers, picture-zing and understanding bars and curves has been my passion for the last 17 years.”

Sharing her inclination towards media planning and buying, Gauthaman said: “Media has always been like a puzzle game – analyzing data, understanding consumer behavior, customizing budgets to plans and eventually shopping media intrigued me more than copy writing/servicing. So from starting off as a client servicing person at my first job, I switched to Media planning and buying later.”

  • Arti Singh: Associate Business Manager at Posterscope Outdoor Advt Pvt Ltd

    (Experience: 10 years)

Arti Singh had a non-descript graduation and although she “was never going to Trinity”, she aced advertising and loved the way it ticked. She could not pursue a professional course and without any guidance or competitive edge, she jumped into the hospitality industry.

She soon gained a foothold – and that was all she needed – in Aaren Initiative which was the sister concern of Lintas Group. She worked as a Central Co-ordinator, handling Tata Indicom’s outdoor account at Pan India level for 22 circles.

Talking about her move to Posterscope, Arti explained: “Alice was finally in the rabbit hole! I also got a chance to work in Activation at Tata. And then came a challenging portfolio in the retail division at Posterscope Outdoor. The field was new to me but I was on a high and needed the adrenaline. I went from being a media executive to media manager and right now I am Associate Business Manager, heading a team of my own. I am proud and passionate about my work and my passion leads me to greener pastures and multinational clients. When glory beckons, I march onward.”

“I didn’t wake up some day and ask myself why I am in Media Planning and Buying? I chose this field as much as it chose me. Retail is an extremely disorganized field but at the same time challenging and innovative.”

For Arti, every day is a brand new – pun intended – horizon, with new people, negotiating commercial proposals and maintaining client satisfaction, both existing and new. She feels that the scope is huge and without any stagnancy. Retail is rapidly expanding with great demand and Inventing, Innovating and Inspiring unique and visible trends for brands are her 3 Is for success.

I remember suddenly having access to sudden burst of choices when it came to newspapers and magazines. In my earlier years as a student, these choices and variety fascinated me. I was very curious about the background of these ‘information vehicles’ and how they may operate. After completing her BA in Mathematics from Lady Shri Ram College, Nilakshi Shukla started her career in marketing with Virgin Atlantic. In January this year, I transferred to MEC Interaction as the Delhi Head; looking after all digital platforms including display, mobile, search, social and creative.”

Nilakshi’s entry into media planning was not a calculated one. She joined WebChutney as a media planning executive, excited about the Internet, but not being entirely sure what it was about and without any prior experience in the space or media planning. But a few days into it, she was convinced that this is what she wanted to do in terms of a career. Nilakshi said that as an avid Internet user and with an inherent curiosity for the medium, being a planner fit right in: “Add to that the explosive growth which Internet usage was poised for and the fact that it was constantly evolving, ensured that this would be a fun and dynamic industry to work in.”
