Media industry professional-turned-forward-thinking thought leader Vishakha Singh has announced the launch of the next cohort of SHIFT (short for Simple Habits and Ideas for Forward Thinking). Singh has two decades of experience as a media professional and as an entrepreneur. SHIFT is a three-week online and offline programme that is designed for corporate professionals, business leaders, students, private practice professionals like dentists, chartered accountants, freelancers and even homemakers aiding them to adopt a forward-thinking mindset that will help them to navigate themselves seamlessly within their fast changing environment. The next cohort is set to begin on January 26, 2022.

Commenting on the next programme, Singh said: “It is always exciting to welcome a new batch to help them carve a better path both for their professional and personal growth. It both excites me and makes me nervous to welcome a new cohort, exciting because you get to meet and interact with a new set of people, nervous as you await with bated breath to let them experience SHIFT as a journey and see the impact post the course. Neither the age nor the designation should keep us from our quest to get better and grow progressively.”

  • The Phenomenon called Pradeep Guha

    Pradeep Guha

    By Vishakha Singh

Vishakha SinghEtsy, said the Facebook representative and a few heads turned towards me. It was mid-morning on a sunny October day in San Francisco, nearly a decade ago. The International Advertising Association India delegation of 20 people were seated in a small room at the Facebook headquarters with a bright orange wall on the backside. As a part of the delegation, I was attending a session by Facebook’s Paul Adams on building communities. It was 2012, when the words ‘digital communities’ appeared like precious jewels in our conversations, in small quantities. Building communities as a business model was new for the world and Facebook was showing the path, in action and in presentations. The speaker was then head of Facebook planning and had just released a book titled ‘Grouped’ on communities which we later received as a gift.

Led by Pradeep Guha, IAA had organised a digital tour for the CEOs to the US to visit and learn from the big tech companies. The 2012 digital tour was the second initiative from IAA and I had onboarded the delegation to visit Microsoft, YouTube, Facebook, Google and Twitter.

That October morning, at the Facebook headquarters, in the middle of a talk by Facebook, I had earned a special spot in Pradeep Guha’s thoughts. Before the start of the tour, in Pradeep Guha’s Mumbai office, sitting across his large wooden table, I had requested him to include a visit to the Etsy office too. A listed company, Etsy is dedicated to building small, homegrown businesses and has been building communities since its inception. Those days, Etsy was not widely popular. PG was not familiar with Etsy but he took interest in my conversation on Etsy.  So as the Facebook speaker talked about Etsy as the leading example in building communities, Pradeep Guha, sitting at the centre of the table, leaned forward and gestured a thumbs up to me. And heads on the table turned in my direction on this rare appreciation coming from him. I was suddenly noticed. Etsy had marked a respectable spot for me in his mind.

In this article, I want to bring your attention to the phenomenon called Pradeep Guha. To the unknown, you can read about Pradeep Guha in the tribute written here and a lot over the internet.

    The Curious:

Techcrunch Disrupt is an annual event held in San Francisco for the tech startup world. It not only showcases new ideas but also the making of ideas, successes and failures. I had described the event to PG and had recommended him to attend it. One fine morning in 2019, I received a message from him on how excited he was to attend it. Curiosity fuels learning and he stayed at the top of knowledge by attending not just Techcrunch but also Singularity University and some other courses. A sharp thinker feeds his mind with new knowledge. He makes efforts to attend courses to learn and unlearn, no matter his age or designation. This is what Pradeep Guha maintained. It was not just an Etsy moment at Facebook, PG made efforts to learn the new from across fields and continents. He displayed curiosity with a proficiency that lacked any arrogance, the arrogance that becomes a second nature for being successful for a long time.

The secret of making a phenomenon is to live a life with a growth mindset, to stay curious and to hone the knowledge.

    The Contrast:

What is the opposite of grand? Insignificant. To balance the two opposites effortlessly is a magical trait and that is what came easy to the phenomenon called PG. He always came up with grand visions but stayed true to the most insignificant details in execution of that vision. There was never any room for error in execution of the grandest of the vision. This reflected in all aspects of his work whether it was related to media selling by designing Mastermind or in creation of landmark events or even in maintaining his relationships with the world. He effortlessly balanced the contrast of big and trivial detail. It was neither compromised nor showcased. The balancing of the contrast was a given, it came like yin and yang, always together.

    The Compassionate:

Pradeep Guha, the media stalwart passed away on August 21, 2021. On August 9, I had a message exchange where he wrote to me saying, “All good, thank you.” The news of his passing filled me with all shades of emotions, primarily being upset. He had hidden the suffering, at the same time, he had responded. When tributes poured in, all of it had the same tone of how he made people feel very special. Losing him became a personal loss on a mass level. Another contrast. His ability to connect, support, bind with people is an ability less possessed by leaders. I was a nobody in his aura of things, but from time to time, I received a message, sometimes a gentle scolding for staying quiet for months. His ability to keep people in his thoughts, to make them feel important and needed is a lesson in generosity. It was a construct maintained over the years. Not just colleagues and friends, he maintained a magical vibe with celebrities too. Renowned personalities treated him like their closest pal, yet he asked for a picture to keep the podium well-defined for both.

Pradeep Guha, the phenomenon, lit the path with his way of life, with childlike curiosity, manlike balancing of contrast and nature like compassion for people. All we need to do is to keep the lights on.

The campaign titled, ‘The Chosen One’ which is in sync with the brand tagline is to celebrate women and their achievements. In a broad sense, the life of a woman is truly a gifted one with both strength of character and delicate nature of her emotions. Vishakha Singh, Founder, Red Polka, and a firm believer in the aspects related to working women says, “The genesis of Red Polka is to enable amazing designers’ businesses and this campaign is dedicated to celebrate the chosen one.”

The campaign showcases designers like Nishita Toprani of Little Pixie (Little girls clothing), Aradhana Nagpal, Dhoop, Diya Mehta of Diya Mehta Clothing, Devangee & Shruti of Vivat, Pooja of Intoto footwear. Rolled out with an outdoor presence at prominent locations in Mumbai, the campaign will also be activated on digital platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

For Red Polka, it is not just about curating designs; it is also about storytelling of several designers. The campaign showcases designers with their element of design like floral bands for Nishita as she uses flowers in all her designs, a wooden goat from Assam for Aradhana as her design inspirations come from eastern part of the country, a tree for Diya Mehta, as she is inspired by a tree and her logo, carries a tree. Black and white raw effect has been given to give a real feel to the story.

Vishakha Singh, Founder and CEO, Red Polka says, “In the last one year, Red Polka has been accepted by both designers and shoppers. The repeat visits by customers on our portal and renewal of designers’ registration with us is a testimony to the fact. While we celebrate womanhood every day, we decided to dedicate this week’s edition to be The Chosen One and rolled out a campaign to celebrate amazing stories from real life.”

With the traffic on the site steadily rising, Red Polka has been undertaking strategic marketing initiatives. The company organized activation through Red Polka show, an offline and an online initiative in Powai and Bandra last week. This first ever exhibition saw a massive crowd of shoppers checking the spring collection.

Vishakha Singh, Founder and CEO, Red Polka says, “We are overwhelmed with the response we got for ‘The Red Polka Show’. Because we handpick designers and their products, it is important to see the impact of curation and it was lovely to see bags in hands of shoppers with 75% of conversion at these offline shows. For a startup, these tractions add to the motivation to drive ahead.”

  • Vishakha Singh’s window-shopping platform Red Polka launched, gets first round of funding

    By A Correspondent

Red Polka, a curation-led podium which showcases brands, designers, their trendsetting products, and the unique stories behind them, has closed its first round of angel funding from a clutch of investors. The funds raised will be used to launch Red Polka mobile app and for team expansion. The app is expected to hit leading app stores in 2-3 months.

Vishakha Singh, Founder and CEO, Red Polka says, “Red Polka caters to discerning shoppers with a need to discover good designs. Red Polka operates in e-commerce enabling space, which is a relatively new segment in India. However, their USP is curation. They not only discover and showcase designs in fashion but also curate products keeping in mind their audience profile. Since the explosive growth in the e-commerce sector, this space has been growing rapidly as they help direct traffic to e-comm and online retailers and improve conversion rates.

The company is also focusing on attracting right talent to build a strong team. While Red Polka has an in-house team of curators, tech-savvy designers, content writers and relationship managers, the company has hired Parnil Mhatre as Chief Technology Officer. Mhatre comes with Artificial Intelligence background and setting up predictive analytics and recommendation systems is his forte. His expertise would enable Red Polka to customise their curation for Women shoppers.

  • Anchor: 5 reasons why one must go for Goafest

    By Vishakha Singh

Companies and people will very soon start talking about the Goa Fest, some media channels are already doing stories telling us what to expect, the controversies and so on. As usual some veterans will ask: “It is the same set of faces, same people, then why this Goa Fest Ji?” And I would reply with a ‘why not?’, after all, it is the only big way of celebrating being in a fun and energy-filled industry.

Here are my five fabulous ‘Fs’ why you should consider going to theGoafest. (Or otherwise)

    5. Feel fresher, Feel younger

When was the last time you did the rain dance? Wait, you just thought you are too old for it? Hah, so am I, and I’m itching to be forty. But that said, I love to watch people on the rain dance floor as I only feel younger. And that’s not the only reason, there is much more energy around in the air to make you feel young in your mind. Age doesn’t matter and will not matter for a while, if you attend Goafest!

    4. Fast Forward

It’s not about celebrating what was good last year; it is more about trends that are emerging. Whoever says whatever; there is a lot to hear. Hear from both national and international minds who give a peek-a-boo in the future. Every year, without fail, the lineup is worth spending a few hours in the air-conditioned hangars. If you fall asleep, you get to recharge yourself, if you stay awake and stay alert; you are in a fast-forward world in a very different way.

    3. Facebooking

Not the Mark Zuckerberg one, but more on face-to-face booking. Yes, Goa Fest is one helluva of social networking opportunity – colleagues, ex-colleagues, new flames, old flames, clients, agencies… there is not a moment you’ll be left alone, even if you wish for it! This is the best time of the year to get your own dose of social networking and that too right at the beginning of the financial year. So pick your choice and spend the year in that company. The company that you keep is what matters, make your choice here!

    2. Fire Fighting

Not too many people will talk about this, but Goafest is the perfect furnace to make you a fighter. Year after year, organizers choose such dates that you will come out a fighter at the end of it. If you can beat the heat, you are an accomplished fighter, and would end up winning all deadlines!

    1. Fine tuning

Um, this is quite secretive. This is not loud. This is absolutely to one’s self. With the amount of work displayed and the creativity in the air, you fine tune your mind, your thoughts, ideas, and keep it hidden – sometimes consciously and many times sub-consciously. This is the best gift that you could give yourself. Of being observant. Of people. Places. Work. Conversations. Of your own self!

If you are convinced of these five fundas (or have some of your own), you must convince at least one more person. Preferably, your client, your agency, your people. See you at Goafest!
