  • So what’s next for Dr Bhaskar Das?

    By Our Staff

There were telltale signs at Goafest last week.

One of the oldest and seniormost delegates present at the three-day event was perhaps also the most energetic. Present at nearly every session held and of course the awards. He ran upto the stage to meet star guests. Selfies galore with all the people who matter.

He is decidedly one of the most cerebral advertising and marketing professionals, one of the few people in the industry who has done his Ph D in marketing twice (not once) and is now working towards his thesis. He is on the Governing Council of MICA, and on the advisory boards and faculty at a few other temples of learning. And then amidst all of this, he does five to seven sales calls a day, is a door-opener for meetings with people who are otherwise unreachable to even the big bosses at media giants. And, yes, he also answers to our questions in Das ka Dum Monday through Friday.

So the telltale signs were that he was present at Goafest not as a representative where he has be Group President/Chief Strategy Officer/Mentor, but as Secretary of The Advertising Club. Yes, you read it right: he was not representing Republic at Goafest.

We tried reaching out to Dr Bhaskar Das, he politely declined to speak. We wrote to Republic via the marketing and PR head. No reply. We wrote to Republic owner, MD and editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami via his secretary. Not once, but twice. No reply. News entities we feel should be concerned about authentic information getting out in the market, are often the last to cooperate with sharing of news.

We also feel that there should be some graciousness, but this is not a story on morals and what’s not cool.

Das’s exit, if indeed true, will of course significantly impact Republic. In the short run at least. For in the last two years, where many corporate and advertising biggies have been dubbing the channel’s content as toxic, Das and the former Group CEO Vikas Khanchandani have been holding fort. Das’s persuasive and self-effacing demeanour has ensured that even those who detest the channel and its face didn’t mind inviting him for a coffee.

In the days when the channel was facing a lot of heat, despite friends in the industry asking him to quit, his only reply was: Yes, I am disturbed with the controversy. My age doesn’t allow me the strain. But I will never desert the ship at a time like this..

While entities like The Times of India, Zee and Dainik Bhaskar have thrived even after his exit, all of them have had a much longer legacy and many leaders who have had a fair equity amongst the powers that be.

Republic has had a string of senior and mid-level exits. COO and distribution head Priya Mukherjee, Group CEO Vikas Khanchandani and now Dr Das.

So what does Dr Bhaskar Das do next?

He has just turned 69. In fact a friend of the family told us that he put in his papers on his birthday on Sunday, on his return from Goafest. He wants to spend more than the hour-odd that he currently does at the gym and spend time with the family, but he also once told us that he wants to fight possible cognitive malnutrition by doing work.

He is active with MICA, and has also been teaching at various other business schools. He also mentors a few start-ups. Is working on his next PhD. Gives gyaan and put things in perspective for whoever needs the help. And is everyone’s friend.

Will he join another news entity?

We don’t know, but we’ll be surprised if he is (or rather his services are) not lapped by anyone.

He once told us: “Lord Krishna will take care of me. He knows it. I am a das, a loyal servant. I’ve always had cordial relations with whosoever I’ve left.”

    Hmmm.

  • Republic expands footprint in UK

    By Our Staff

Republic TV, which is already available on Hotstar and Yupp TV in the UK market, has now added Distro TV pivoting to digital, OTT and smart TV distribution to serve the diaspora in the UK market.

Commenting on the strategy, Vikas Khanchandani, Group CEO, Republic Media Network said: “Republic TV is a news media technology company and has been the front runner to make its streaming services available across smart phones and connected TVs with its partnerships with OTT, OEMs and Telco platforms both within India and globally. The pandemic has accelerated streaming TV consumption driven by news & sports.  It’s an opportune moment for us to pivot our strategy in the UK market as streaming is outpacing pay TV in UK.”

Added Priya Mukherjee, COO – India Distribution head and International markets:  “The channel has performed much ahead of legacy players, reaching a peak of 421K and maintaining an average reach around 200K in the last quarter during the pandemic. Many platforms have approached us given the leadership position and the loyal audiences we built in the UK, in such a short time.  Our Distribution Capabilities, give us an opportunity, to approach each market differently and we are looking at all possible models that are best suited to our expansion plans.”

  • Is Group CEO Vikas Khanchandani paying the price for Republic TV’s journalism?

    By Pradyuman Maheshwari

On Sunday, December 13, 2020, Republic Media Network Group Chief Executive Officer Vikas Khanchandani had stepped out on his morning walk in suburban Mumbai. A little after 8am, when he got back home, there was a police contingent waiting for him. He was arrested on the TRP Scam case that has been raging in the industry for a few months. There was some hope still since the matter was going to come for hearing in the presence of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, but rather than secure bail or release, he was remanded to police custody till tomorrow (December 15).

Khanchandani is the fourth Republic TV employee who has been arrested by the Mumbai police including founder, editor-in-chief and managing director Arnab Goswami. Last week, he was summoned several times by the police for questioning.

    So what is Khanchandani’s crime?

    1. He is Group CEO of Republic Media Network, and is hence responsible for all business functions of the organisation. He reports to Arnab Goswami who is also managing director and the primary promoter.

    2. As per the Companies Act of 2013, the law clearly lists  the key managerial personnel included – in this order: The MD or CEO or Manager and in their absence: a whole-time director. These are followed by the Company Secretary and then the Chief Financial Officer. In Republic’s case, the MD and promoter is the key official, but guess arresting him again would be too hot to handle

    3. The police says that as Group CEO and to whom Chief Operating Officer Priya Mukherjee reported, Khanchandani instructed her and the team on all the allegedly illegal actions.

    4. Republic TV, as per the police claims, had allegedly indulged in activities that regulatory body TRAI (short for Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) frowns upon

It may be noted that Khanchandani was arrested a day before his anticipatory bail application was to be heard by the Sessions Court in Mumbai. He was represented by Senior Advocate and Republic TV’s lawyer, Aabad Ponda.

So what you have above is the official stand, but it’s clear that Khanchandani was arrested given the ongoing slugfest on between Goswami and the Maharashtra government and Mumbai Police. Both have been equally critical of each other, but Goswami has gone a step further to damn and provoke the government and the Police Commissioner. On air. In English and in Hindi.

Logically, Khanchandani should have had the industry come out in support. This writer was among the first to do that, only to be ridiculed and questioned on Twitter that Khanchandani was party to all the excesses of Goswami on television. The media trial that happened post the actor Sushant Singh Rajput death and the manner in which Rajput’s friend and actor Rhea Chakraborty was being targeted ensured that even Goswami’s well-wishers (like this writer) turned against him.

And then there is Goswami’s very open praise of the BJP-led NDA government’s policies and actions. While the channel owner may say that it’s his nationalism that governs him, it’s a clear pursuit of ratings (nothing wrong with it) and commerce at all cost that is driving him. Thankfully for him, the BJP is firmly in the saddle till mid-2024, but the result is that all the goodwill that the channel and its founder have had had has been lost. Khanchandani, as Goswami’s second-in-command, bears the brunt of this legacy.

Sample the tweet by Raj Nayak, a senior mediaperson who is known to be a friend and mentor to Khanchandani: “I am really saddened by the arrest of my dear friend #VikasKhanchandani. We’ve been close for over 2 decades. I can vouch for his integrity. His only fault being at the wrong place at the wrong time and getting caught in the crossfire. Praying that he is safe and released soon.”

I am really saddened by the arrest of my dear friend #VikasKhanchandani. We’ve been close for over 2 decades. I can vouch for his integrity. His only fault being at the wrong place at the wrong time and getting caught in the crossfire.  Praying that he is safe and released soon.

    — Raj Nayak (@rajcheerfull) December 13, 2020

Let’s read this line from Nayak’s tweet again: His only fault being at the wrong place at the wrong time and getting caught in the crossfire.

Clearly, there is nothing that’s left unsaid. Khanchandani is a good guy, but at the wrong place – Republic Media Network.

    So what must be done:

    1. Khanchandani, his family and friends and the industry must prevail upon Goswami to cease and desist from provoking the government and courts any longer. On Sunday, when the Court order came in, Goswami was on air and was virtually questioning the Court verdict. If it is examined for Contempt of Court and found to disobeying the judiciary, Khanchandani could have problems. In fact, if the government is provoked further, it will only delay the decision to free Khanchandani

    2. This is a personal and professional decision, but it’s time that Khanchandani and all right-thinking (right as in correct and not the politically right) people working with Republic Media Network weigh how their continuance in the organisation impacts their moral and legal standing.

My tweet expressing sadness at Khanchandani’s arrest and assertion that he has a squeaky clean reputation had some who endorsed his professional standards but also drew some angry feedback. Sample this: “… the fact remains that he has been part of a hate factory that has been selling ads to promote more hate based on gaming the system because of inefficiencies”.

Sad to see @republic TV CEO Vikas Khanchandani being arrested. I have known him for many years and can say he’s squeaky clean. Yes, he works with Republic. But is that his primary crime? @VickMaverick @rajcheerfull @TheAdClub_India @IAA_India

    — Pradyuman Maheshwari (@pmahesh) December 13, 2020

Another comment said: “… would you say that he somewhere profited when the whole SSR debacle was taking place on his network, where the so called ‘guilty’ were charged even before a proper trial. Even if he did what he did while being aware of the right or wrong then I guess Karma’s a bitch.”

The decision on what next is clearly with Goswami and Khanchandani. And whether Khanchandani spends two or more days depends on how Goswami conducts himself. On television.

He was an excellent journalist, is well-educated, has impeccable social skills, but when he’s on camera and in his studio, he’s a different being.

The Shiv Sena-led MVA government has such stalwarts like Sharad Pawar mentoring it. The fact that the combine could outwit a BJP with superpowers like Narendra Modi and Amit Shah speaks volumes for what they can achieve.

Sadly, Khanchandani and his family are paying the price for all of Goswami’s actions.

  • BARC says it hasn’t commented on TRP issue. Says mail contents made public by Republic are confidential

    By Our Crime Correspondent

Dear God, Grant us a day’s break on a Sunday. In a week, a day’s chutti should be fine, no?

But the A&M beat is suddenly on an overdrive.

So we just received this statement: ” BARC India has not commented on the ongoing investigation and it is providing necessary assistance to the law enforcement agency. BARC India is highly disappointed with the actions of the Republic Network by disclosing private and confidential communications and misrepresenting the same. BARC India reiterates that it has not commented on the ongoing investigation and without prejudice to BARC India’s rights, it expresses its dismay at the actions of the Republic Network.”

So what’s this “action” about Republic all about? Since it’s about a confidential mail, we’ll stick to a story on Republicworld.com. Here’s the link https://www.republicworld.com/india-news/general-news/barc-email-shreds-param-bir-singhs-trp-case-lies-against-republic-fa.html

  • Republic Bharat hikes ad rates on the back of high ratings

    By A Correspondent

Remember Uber, the cab aggregator service we would also use once to commute? Some of us still do of course. But this isn’t about Uber. It’s about Uber introduce surge pricing when the demand was high and the supply was less.

Over the last few weeks, Republic Bharat has been flying high on the ratings roster. Critics may say that that it’s on the back of the Sushant Singh Rajput coverage of the channel. Perhaps it is, but it’s #1 is on for the third consecutive week and even though BARC guidelines recommend usuage of ratings data for a four-week average, it’s not inappropriate to record R.Bharat’s rise.

Yes, there is a distinct possibly that category leader Aaj Tak may get back to its #1 status as it has in the past, but from what we hear, the R Bharat newsroom is fighting hard to ensure this is not considered an aberration.

The channel claims 19.53% marketshare on the basis of the 14 top Hindi news channels from the 27 watermarked channels that BARC measures. The average time spent per viewer, notes a communique, has grown by 100% since its launch at a staggering 27 mins whereas the total time spent of the Hindi News genre is 17 mins. R Bharat continues to maintain #2 position in terms of reach. The channel also claims the “owning primetime” slot.

With R Bharat exerting its influence on the ratings roster, the channel has announced an increase the price by more than 50% of the existing rates. “With the upcoming festive season, R Bharat has announced special offers, promising advertisers across genres a seamless execution experience with the best platform in the Hindi News Market,” adds the communique.

Said Vikas Khanchandani, Group CEO of Republic Media Network: “Republic Bharat as a brand has taken up people’s causes and has stayed true to its core by focusing on 100% News. R. Bharat has connected with the Hindi-speaking masses by staying relevant, fearless and honest. That love and affinity for the brand has translated into strong viewership and ratings. Republic Bharat as platform delivers both performance and impact which is makes it the most engaging and effective news platform across Bharat”

Added Hersh Bhandari, COO of Republic Bharat: “The belief that news is back has been our biggest win. We have demonstrated with our performance, that we have been consistently delivering for our partners. Clients today are ready to  reward  performance, if they are convinced about their investment and smart enough to understand their returns. With over 200 weekly active brands showing their faith in the brand , we are in position to ask the deserving price/rate in the market and we are confident that the market will respond positively.”

Leading English news channel Republic TV has reported healthy numbers on its outreach via smartphones and digital devices on OTT platform, telco apps and OEMs like Hotstar, Jio TV, Zee5, SonyLIV, Vodafone Play, OLAPlay, Mi TV, Samsung My Galaxy, PayTm, YouTube and JustDial.

The Republic TV ‘Double’ Exit poll show saw 19.8 million watch minutes being clocked digitally. Source – Brightcove Analytics, Hotstar Analytics, YouTube Analytics and Frrole Insights. The above data does not include data from Jio TV. It may be noted that since there is no third-party measurement of access data, the Republic TV numbers of watch minutes has not been independently verified by MxMIndia.

Said Vikas Khanchandani, Group CEO, Republic Media Network: “News and sports categories have been the driving force for video consumption across AVOD Platforms.
