  • Only 10 jury members in 9 categories from India at Cannes Lions. None in 17 categories

    By A Correspondent

Cannes Lions, the International Festival of Creativity, has announced the 413 jury members chosen to award and celebrate the best creative work from around the world. This year’s juries are composed of individuals from 50 countries, including for the first time representatives from Georgia, Nigeria, Kenya and Sri Lanka.

Sadly only 10 jury members across nine categories are from India and as many as 17 categories have no representation from India. There are of course people from Indian origin or folks who have worked in India in the past (like Ravi Rao, Rupen Desai etc), but then they aren’t from an Indian agency.

Said Jose Papa, Managing Director of Cannes Lions: “The job of the Cannes Lions jury is to act as the custodians of creativity and celebrate work that demonstrates the value of creativity in all its forms. We are committed to ensuring that our juries include a diverse range of people from across the branded communications ecosystem.”

Last year the Festival announced new Lions with the introduction of a new Awards architecture to better reflect and support the fast-moving creative industries. These Lions include Creative eCommerce Lions, Brand Experience and Activation Lions, Social and influencer Lions, Sustainable Development Goals Lions and the Industry Craft Lions. An overall reduction in the number of categories within individual Lions refined the focus, while new categories were introduced to reflect how creative companies are operating.

Added Terry Savage, Chairman, Cannes Lions:“Cannes Lions is now in its 65th year and in that time the industry, and the organisations operating within it, has changed dramatically. These new specialised Lions require a broader range of skills and experience which will ultimately help expand our perspective of creative excellence. The Lions are constantly evolving, just as the industry is, and our jury members are fundamental to ensuring that we keep creativity at the core of what we do.”

The 2018 Cannes Lions Awards will be presented at ceremonies taking place each evening throughout the Festival from June 18 to 22.

So here’s the list of folks from Indian organisations who will be part of the juries at Cannes Lions 2018:

  • Taproot tops Spikes Asia

    By A Correspondent

There was much disappointment when the Adidas Odds campaign did win big at the 2017 Cannes Lions. We expected it to, just as we were certain the Bajaj V would also earn back rich laurels.

But then these things happens at all jury-led events and for Taproot, accolades (and metals) at D&AD, OneShow, Adfest or Cannes on the international arena have meant some satisfaction. And now the Adidas Odds campaign has bagged the biggest award at Spikes Asia – the Integrated Grand Prix. Taproot Dentsu has also named as the Indian Agency of the Year Award on the back of 10 metals.

Says Santosh Padhi, Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer with a smile: “Though I was bit disappointed with Cannes results, as I felt it was under rewarded with just three lions at Cannes, but this has made up for that,” adding: “Spikes Asia is one of the reputed Advertising Award Shows of Asia, We are happy to got two of the greatest honors at Spikes Asia this year in form of a “Integrated grand Prix” and “India Agency Of The Year” awards.

And his comments on topping the country at Spikes? “This is not the first time we have fetched this title of Agency Of The Year on global forum… Last year at Clio we were the India Agency of the Year.  In 2012 we were Adfest Agency of the year, at many occasions at various awards shows we have topped the table for India nothing gives us more high than to represent the nation at such international forums”

The other Grand Prix bagged by an Indian Agency was in the ‘Good’ category. And it was presented to McCann for “The Immunity Charm” for the Ministry Of Public Health, Afghanistan

Meanwhile, the 2017 edition of Spikes Asia closed with the Spikes Asia Awards last weekend where members of the creative industry from across Asia-Pacific gathered to celebrate and honour the best work from the region.

Commenting on the formidable jury line-up including the new Product Design Lions jury, Terry Savage, Chairman of Lions Festivals, said, “As a global festival celebrating the best creative ideas in brand communications, it is important to embrace all facets of this ever-changing industry, and as such we very much look forward to welcoming the members of the first ever Product Design Lions jury to Cannes Lions along with all our other juries. A 40-strong jury of media professionals from around the world will be divided into eight sub-groups of five people tasked to cast the first round of votes that will determine the shortlist. Jury president Matt Seiler, Global CEO of IPG Mediabrands, will spend time with each sub-group but will not vote during this first round. • Cannes Lions adds a few more award categories for 2014

    By a correspondent

The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is introducing a number of changes to some of its Special Awards which are based on points accumulated from shortlisted and award winning work presented at the Festival.

The Palme d’Or award, presented to the best performing Production Company, will see changes introduced to bring it in-line with the other special awards. The calculation will continue to be based on a points system awarded as follows: 10 points for a Grand Prix; 7 points for a Gold Lion; 5 points for a Silver Lion; 3 points for a Bronze Lion; 1 point for a shortlist entry.

    The changes being introduced are:

    • Production companies no longer have to have at least 10 entries in the qualifying categories -  Film, Film Craft and Branded Content & Entertainment – to be eligible for the Palme d’Or.

    • The Palme d’Or will consider all shortlisted and winning entries from a Production Company.  In previous years, only the best 10 entries from each production company were considered.

    • Shortlisted points will now be capped at 10 points, which is in line with the existing Agency of the Year rules.

“We welcome these positive changes to the Palme d’Or award as they will allow exposure to more producers throughout the world,” said François Chilot, President of CFPE/YDA.

The Media Agency of the Year Award will be replaced by the Media Network of the Year award. It will be awarded to the media agency network that obtains the highest score for entries in the Media Lions section. Only media agencies are eligible to compete in this award, which will be based on a points system as above. Advertising agencies credited on shortlisted and winning campaigns in Media Lions will see their points included in the Agency of the Year and Independent Agency of the Year calculation.

“As is our usual process when introducing changes at Cannes Lions, we consult extensively with industry leaders to ensure that we continue to be relevant and reflect the changes that are happening in the business around the world,” said Terry Savage, Chairman of Lions Festivals. “These adjustments to the calculations of the Special Awards are no exception, and as such we are delighted to have the support and endorsement of the key players.”
