  • IAA holds second edition of the Voice of Change summit

    The International Advertising Association (IAA) India Chapter, held the second edition of the Voice of Change summit: ‘Gender Portrayal from 30 seconds to 3 Hours’ last Thursday (November 9).

     

    After introductions and elucidation of the mission statements by Megha Tata, Co-Chair, IAA Women Empowerment Committee and Immediate Past President, IAA India Chapter, and Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Chairperson, IAA Women Empowerment Committee, there was an address by Cynthia McCaffrey from the Unicef “Gender inequalities in children’s lives and in the lives of those who care for them, hinder their growth, development, learning and eventually in reaching their full potential. Statistically, the lack of parity impacts girls and women the most but also disadvantages men and boys,” she said, adding: “Children observe and learn social cues from many forms of content including advertising and it plays a powerful role in shifting perceptions on gender roles. UNICEF is delighted to be the knowledge partner with IAA and its members on this very important journey to promote positive gender roles and practices through advertising, so every young person can live a life free from stereotypes and achieve their full potential”.

     

    A multi-lingual study powered  by  Google  AI  titled,  “Reflecting  India  –  An intersectional   and   longitudinal   analysis   of   popular scripted television from 2018 to 2022”, led jointly by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media (GDI), the Signal Analysis and Interpretation Laboratory (SAIL) at the University of Southern California (USC) as the academic advisor, and the IAA as media studies advisor was also unveiled at the event. The study covered the 10 most popular scripted television shows in India across five languages – Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu – between 2018 and 2022, according to the Broadcast  Audience Research Council (BARC), India.

     

    The study revealed several data-driven insights about representation in the India media and entertainment sector. Across all the shows analysed, young adults between the ages of 18 and 32 were seen the most, accounting for 75.6% of all characters present on screen, while characters with lighter skin appeared 8X more than characters with medium or dark skin tones. Female characters were present on screen and their names mentioned in dialogue more than male characters, amounting to over half of a show’s time, with 7 in 10 of all perceived female characters on screen typically being young and having lighter skin tones.

    The event saw the felicitation of Gender Warriors, industry seniors who have “championed gender equity, and led by example as protagonists of change”. This included advertising veteran KV ‘Pops’ Sridhar, Dr  A L  Sharada, Director, Population First, and social activist Dr Shyam Sundar Paliwal.

     

    Additionally, the event also recognized the distinguished service of, and felicitated the IAA North Star awardees, Srinivasan Swamy, Chairman and Managing Director, R K Swamy and Ramesh Narayan, Founder, Canco Advertising, for their contribution to the IAA.

     

    The day also saw panel discussion with industry experts Sameer Nair, MD, Applause Entertainment; Aparna Purohit, Head of Originals, Amazon Prime Video; Gaurav Banerjee, Content and Business Head, Disney Star, journalist Anuradha Sengupta, Raj Kamble, Founder and CCO, Famous Innovation; Mansha Tandon, Head of Marketing, YouTube India; Dr A L Sharada, director-screenplaywWriter Renzil D’Silva and journalist Prasad Sangameshwaran, among others.

     

    The day concluded with a fireside chat with actor and activist Dia Mirza conducted by television host Atika Farooqui.

     

  • Nickelodeon to air new IP on Sonic & Colors Rishtey

    Nickelodeon is all set to bring its recently announced 13th homegrown IP – ‘Kanha – Morpankh Samraat’ on Sonic. Nickelodeon will extend the show beyond its channel, and make way to the Viacom18’s Hindi general entertainment channel Colors Rishtey, thereby strengthening the kids’ franchise’s presence across different age groups and widening its impact.

  • Nickelodeon launches 2 new homegrown IPs

    The Nickelodeon kids’ network from Viacom18 has announceed the launch of two new IPs, ‘Abhimanyu Ki Alien Family’ and ‘Kanha – Morpankh Samrat’ starting April 24. ‘Abhimanyu Ki Alien Family’, the only alien show in the kids’ category, is a sci-fi comedy series.

  • It’s 10 years for Motu Patlu

    Leading kids’ entertainment channel has informed that its popular toon icon Motu Patlu has completed 10 years of existence.

  • IAA rallies industry to raise Voice of Change

    The International Advertising Association (IAA) India Chapter held a summit titled Voice of Change: Gender Portrayal from 30 seconds to 3 hours, where the important conversation on gender parity, as seen in media, was brought forth in a day of discussions, debates and research findings. IAA started the journey last year with a research study in partnership with UNICEF, conducted by the Geena Davis Institute on gender representation in advertising. Taking their cue from the facts presented in the study, the industry body decided to initiate tangible change through the dialogue required to bring about gender sensitivity amongst the people at the helm of content creation and marketing in India.

     

    Kicking off the event, Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Chairperson, IAA Women Empowerment Committee and Head – Hindi Mass Entertainment and Kids TV Network, Viacom18, said “Voice of Change harkens the need of a more sensitised and inclusive narrative in content and all the creative minds present here – content creators, brand custodians and students are the powerhouses behind creating and marketing that content now and in the years to come.   • IAA to host gender sensitisation summit

    The International Advertising Association (IAA), India chapter is hosting a summit on Gender Sensitisation In Media on July 29 in Mumbai. The theme is Gender Portrayal across the creative spectrum from a 30-second TVC to a three-hour film.

     

    Said Megha Tata, President IAA India: “IAA has always brought forward initiatives that are meaningful and Gender sensitive, on and off screen and has also been the one who has always taken the lead on this issue in the industry. We felt that it is time for all of us to come together and be the voice of change. We want to address the dialogue of gender discrimination across the media spectrum and hope we will collectively bring much needed change in the system.”

     

    Added Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Chairperson, IAA Women Empowerment Committee & Head – Hindi and Kids TV Network, Viacom18 Media Pvt. Ltd: “Over the last decade, women have broken stereotypes in this industry both behind the scenes and on the screen. It’s time we tell more of those stories and break biases.     The summit shall see leading industry bodies such as ASCI, UNICEF, Tata Institute Of Social Sciences, Unstereotype Alliance and Akshara Centre as partners.   • Colors to launch ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi 12’

    Colors is back with the 12th season of its premier show ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’. It will be hosted by director Rohit Shetty and is produced by Endemol Shine India.

  • Viacom18 bags TV and digital rights for Abu Dhabi T10

    Viacom18 has bagged the TV and digital rights for the Abu Dhabi T10. Facilitated by sports management firm Rise Worldwide, Viacom18’s multiyear partnership with Abu Dhabi T10 will further enhance cricketing action in India.

     

    Speaking about the partnership Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Head – Hindi Mass Entertainment and Kids TV Network, Viacom 18 said: “Sporting events have always attracted a wide spectrum of audiences and we have been successfully experimenting with sports content on our network.   • IAA to host discussion on gender sensitisation in media

    The India Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA) will be hosting a high-powered virtual panel discussion with leaders of the marcom industry on July 27. The subject is Gender in media and the impact on children and their future.

     

    Said Megha Tata, MD- South Asia, Discovery Communications India and President, IAA: “A few weeks ago, we released the toplines of the results of a unique market research conducted on 1000 Indian advertisements by UNICEF and the Geena Davis Foundation. The IAA had facilitated this important research on gender representation in Indian advertising on July 27. UNICEF will present the results in depth, and then there will be a discussion on the implication of these findings on gender in media and the impact on children and their future. This will truly represent industry as the Voice of Change”.

     

    Speaking about the initiative, Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Head – Hindi Mass Entertainment and Kids TV Network, Viacom18 and Co-Chair – Women Empowerment Committee, IAA said: “Conversations and actions go hand in hand when tackling an issue as important and nuanced as gender representation in media and its impact.   • Ranveer Singh to debut as quiz master on Colors

    General entertainment channel Colors has acquired the rights for quiz show ‘The Big Picture’. The channel has signed actor Ranveer Singh who is to make his television debut as the host. The quiz show for which Byju’s will be presenting sponsor will also be available on Voot and Jio TV. The channel will work in association with Banijay Asia and ITV Studios Global Entertainment B.V.
