  • Do we need Public Service Ads or Public Service Brands?

    Vikas MehtaWhen I joined the world of advertising more than three decades ago, I was lucky to be part of Lintas, now Mullen Lowe Lintas. While there were advertising agencies which were producing very creative, hard-hitting ads or agencies which produced ads that were strategically sound and would not elicit a second glance, Lintas had positioned itself as an agency which built brands. Be it Surf or Lifebuoy or Kitply or MRF Tyres or Chrery Blossom… the list was long.

    What I also discovered was that Lintas was heavily invested into public service advertisements. Many memorable ads were made. Causes like anti-dowry, you are no better than a buffalo at an auction if you ask for dowry. Or anti-drugs, drugs means death; or even the one which used sugarcane juice vendors to highlight the importance of hygiene in avoiding diseases during monsoons. The last one, I remember, was effective enough to elicit protests from sugarcane juice vendors who protested outside Lintas offices at Express Towers in Nariman Point, Mumbai.

    But I always wondered how much of an impact the ads made amongst the target group. Sure it got awards, peer appreciation etc, but did they make a change in society?

    And this thought resurfaced when a friend with family had a close shave in a car crash because the husband in the front was wearing seat belt though she and children in the back were not and they did get bruised and cut. And I wondered why people still do not wear seat belts inspite of many public service ads and messages.

    The feeling got reinforced when I saw an emotive and impactful ad on not drinking and driving. Watch it here. And again, the same feeling resurfaced. Why do such well-made ads not really work?

    One can point to many a reason. Wrong targeting, not insightful, sporadic or inconsistent messaging and so on. But the answer is actually quite simple.

    And here I go back to the Lintas analogy. While some ads are creatively outstanding, some bang on strategy, are they really building a brand? Strangely, while Lintas built many great commercial brands, I do not think it build a public service brand.

    Any public service messaging remains just a message if one does not treat the issue as a brand. We don’t communicate a product. We communicate to build a brand. We communicate to ultimately sell Lux or Dove. Not a soap. We define a focused target group. We look deep to find an insight. We try and identify what should the rational and emotional benefit be. We create a desired response and then we also build a brand personality. Finally, a brand idea is crafted.

    Do we do all this in public service ads?

    The brutal answer is no. Most of the times we identify a cause, we try and find a creative insight and work to create and ad. And that’s why the ad does not work. It’s a one-off. It’s about maybe shock-and-awe. Or it’s about tearing emotions. It could also be a straightforward presentation of some interesting facts. It’s aimed at mostly everyone, or just your peers. It has no defined brand personality and most importantly, it has no ownership.

    The starting point needs to be ownership. Someone… it could be a corporate, it could be an NGO or even the government if it seriously wants to tackle an issue needs to take ownership of the issue. And then brand it. ‘Do not drink and drive’ is a message. Not a brand. Ditto for ‘smoking kills’ or ‘wear seat belts’. The brand-owner needs to find a phrase or a name which will be used in all pieces of communication. We live in a world of hashtags and acronyms. That could be the answer.

    And then create a brand document followed by a creative brief. Define the target group. They could be multiple. For example, in case of drinking and driving, it could be the millennial partygoers or a public transport driver. Write separate briefs. Create different pieces of communication. Decide the appropriate media.

    Currently, the thinking is more to create a shock-and-awe effect. In case of both drunk driving and seatbelts, most communication deals with what can happen if one does not wear seat belt or drinks and drives. But if we look at the issue from a brand perspective, the bigger issue could be (my perspective solely) that most millennials think that this will not happen to me. Or I know I can handle my drink. If we do a proper research amongst our decided target group, we will be able to actually pinpoint the actual issue. Reach an insight. Decide on our desired response.

    To do all that lets treat public service ads as brands.

    Let’s nurture the brand.

    Grow it.

    Make it effective.

    Spend on it strategically and with proper planning.

    If, the Got Milk (note the brand name) campaign with the brand idea of moustache could work to increase per capita milk consumption in the United States, no reason why a public service issue cannot be handled like a brand.

  • Mullen Lowe films campaign for Fastrack

    Fastrack sunglasses has launch a new brand campaign titled #NecessoryNotAccessory. Conceptualised by Mullen Lowe Lintas, the campaign is showcased through three multi-concept films.

     

    Said Maneesh Krishnamurthy, Head of Marketing, Eyecare Division Titan Company: “In a tropical country like ours, sunglasses are a must-have. For decades, sunglasses have been marketed as a fashion accessory only but that is not just, why they were created. With #NeccessaryNotAccessory we want to bring new users to the category and grow it by showing the consequences of missing your sunglasses on your next holiday. We believe your beach holiday will never be the same after you experience it with polarised sunglasses nor will you experience the blinding effect of the Indian summer sun with the right mirrored sunglasses. We are ‘educating’ with a Fastrack quirk.”

     

    Added Sonali Khanna – President & Head of Lowe Lintas, South: “Fastrack is a brand where we’ve always made unconventional campaigns to match their unique products. Hence, we decided to push this from merely a ‘feature-education’ piece to a fun and interesting narrative on why sunglasses are ‘Necessary not Accessory’.”

     

  • Industry, staff shocked at Joe George’s exit announcement

    It looked like any other day. A rainy one indeed. And while it’s been raining several top-level changes in the industry over the last fortnight, this one was very big. Very, very big. In fact given the scenario, bigger than a Sonal Dabral joining Ogilvy and Rajiv Rao leaving the creative major.

     

    First the news that has been carried by most media already. Joseph George (better known as Joe), Group Chairman and CEO, MullenLoweLintas Group, India and Regional President, MullenLowe Group South & Southeast Asia, has called it quits. He will move on from the agency network at the end of September 2017.

     

    George is no rolling stone. He has had an uninterrupted stint of over 26 years with the company, where he played numerous growth, brand management, client management and leadership roles locally, regionally and globally, he now plans to pursue what he calls “his big dream”. The staff at the agencies were in a state of shock one learns, some even sobbing as they have had much love and admiration for George.

     

    First, let’s be done with the communique that was sent out earlier.

    Alex Leikikh, Global CEO, MullenLowe Group, is quoted in a statement: “Joe has made such a huge contribution to the MullenLowe Group network during his 26 years within the organisation that it really is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to him. During his recent tenure, Joe has led MullenLoweLintas Group to huge success within India, across the APAC region and on a global stage. The agency has been credited with many firsts for India including, the best new business performer for four years in a row, the number one Creative Agency in the World by WARC 100 (twice), consecutive double-wins at 4A’s Jay Chiat Awards and runner up for AdAge International Agency of the Year 2015. On behalf of the entire MullenLowe Group network I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Joe who has built and led our business in India and South and Southeast Asia so successfully. He leaves behind a great team, legacy and business poised for even greater future growth.”

     

    George joined Lintas India in 1991, and has been with the company through its journey of evolution – from Lintas India to the MullenLoweLintas Group of today. George was appointed India CEO in 2011 and while continuing to be based in Mumbai, took on the additional responsibility of running the South Asia & Southeast Asia region for MullenLowe Group in 2016. He also serves on the Global Executive Committee of the MullenLowe Group network.

     

    During his six-year leadership, Mullen Lowe Lintas Group grew into one of the most powerful agency groups in India. Outperforming the industry right through this period, on business growth, organizational reputation as well as on creative output. It was also during this period that MullenLoweLintas Group emerged as the most consistently dominant performer in Market Effectiveness across the world. He was also the chief architect of the launch of the two new Indian agencies from the MullenLoweLintas Group – Mullen Lintas in August 2015 and the recently launched Point Nine Lintas.

     

    Speaking of this development, George said in a statement: “MullenLoweLintas Group in India today is in the best shape it’s been in for a very long time. I couldn’t be moving on at a better time, and any happier or prouder with what the 1000 of us have managed to achieve these past years. Alex and I have worked closely over the past 8 months on the transition plan; and with the road map and the leadership in place for all three agencies of MullenLoweLintas Group, I am confident that our agency network in India is ready to author its next chapter of success.”

     

    On the India transition planning, Leikikh added: “One of Joe’s greatest strengths has been his ability to develop world class business and creative leaders. Those people will now step up to continue our progress and evolution in one of the world’s most dynamic and important markets.”

     

    In his 18-month leadership of the South Asia & Southeast Asia markets, George focused on creating stronger and tighter management structures across the offices. He led IPG’s agency-acquisition in Sri Lanka and subsequently its overall transformation; the re-structuring of the MullenLowe Thailand and Vietnam operations, as well as putting in place the leadership and brand and business strategy for the MullenLowe Singapore office. Succession plans for Joe’s Southeast Asia responsibilities are in advanced stages of finalization, and will be announced by global CEO Alex Leikikh in the coming weeks.

     

    George concludes on a personal note: “This agency has given me everything. Probably more than I deserve! Twenty-six years can be a lifetime, but there’s an impatient excitement in me today to want to start all over again. Ironically and a tad illogically though, this urge to do so is because I have enjoyed every single day of my quarter century in this fabulous network”

     

    Hmmm. So the question is who’ll take charge of the mother ship after George exits in end-September. All the other captains – ArunIyer, Amer Jaleel, Raj Gupta, Virat Tandon and Vikas Mehta are now handling their own key functions. They’ve assumed fresh charge over the last two years and have their tasks cut out for them.

     

    So will it be an outsider – but part of the global/regional MullenLowe fold who will come here? Remember Charles Cadell was CEO for three years from 2008 to 2011. So since all the captains are busy with their own kingdoms, perhaps an expat may help ensure that all’s well and well-oiled.

     

    The Mullen Lowe Lintas Group has also also been doing very well on the effectiveness and strategy awards circuit, and while the next next Effies will happen in December 2017 and the preparation would’ve started under George’s leadership, what the direction of the agency on the effectiveness and creative awards front will be interesting to see.

     

    Will the new MLLG boss reverse the R Balki-Joseph George policy on not participating in creative awards, only time will tell. Until then, here’s hoping for a happy transition at the Mullen Lowe Lintas Group. One is also looking forward to what George’s dream project is all about. There are two bits in the communique that hint at what it could be: one it’s a big dream and second, he’s going “to start all over again”. So a start-up for sure. And unlikely to be another agency. So what next?

     

    Watch this space. Meanwhile, let’s hope there are no more announcements in adland. We’ve had enough.

     

  • India rules at APAC Effie Awards as Mullen Lowe Lintas is Agency of the Year 2016

     

     

    The winners of the APAC Effie Awards 2016 were revealed at an awards gala Thursday evening celebrating Asia Pacific’s most effective marketing campaigns.

     

    MullenLowe Lintas Group India was named APAC Effie 2016 Agency of the Year, bagging 8 metals. Running behind were Colenso BBDO/Proximity and spotting three agencies in the tie on the third place, BBDO India, Barnes Catmur& Friends Dentsu and Ogilvy & Mather Mumbai.

     

    On the network level, BBDO Worldwide took the lead, with a total haul of 17 metal awards, including the Grand Effie, followed by Ogilvy & Mather and MullenLowe Group coming in the second and third position respectively.

     

    Two new Special Awards were added this year – Brand of the Year and Marketer of the Year to recognise the joint efforts and close collaboration between clients and agencies to produce successful work. The awards were presented to Ariel Matic and Procter & Gamble respectively, with their entry ‘Ariel – Share The Load’ being the best of show for the night, clinching the Grand Effie, on top of a Gold and a Silver. These special awards were accorded based on the points received on all winners and finalists.

     

    The awards gala, attended by some 200 industry professionals, presented a total 66 Effies – 1 Grand Effie, 12 Golds, 21 Silvers and 32 Bronzes. As with previous year, India remains to be the strongest market in the region on the effectiveness stage,contributing the highest number of metal winners last night. Following in the ranking are New Zealand and Australia.

     

    Said Cheuk Chiang, Chairman of the 2016 APAC Effie Awards: ” Congratulations to all the winners. It is a massive acknowledgement. To get here having gone through two rigorous rounds of judging by a stellar team of industry professionals is a significant and incredible achievement and indeed something to be proud of. These winning cases represent the best in Asia Pacific and I hope they only serve to inspire the industry further in producing great work that drive real business results.”

     

    Organised by the Confederation of Asian Advertising Agency Associations (CAAAA) and Tenasia Group, the APAC Effie Awards honours the region’s most outstanding marketing communication works that have proven results in meeting strategic objectives. Winners and finalists will contribute points towards the ranking on the 2016 Effie Effectiveness Index, the global ranking which identifies and ranks the most effective marketers, brands by analysing finalist and winner data from worldwide Effie competitions.

  • It’s Mullen Lowe Lintas at the Effies

    Till fairly late in the evening the boys in black were leading the points tally. And then, in the slog overs as host Brian Tellis put, the folks from across the Mullen Lowe Lintas Group pipped last year’s winners.

     

    Mullen Lowe Lintas Group bagged the coveted Agency of the Year award at the Effie Award held in Mumbai last evening. At an event attended by some 1200 members of the fraternity, Hindustan Unilever was awarded the Client of the Year award. The Grand Effie for the integrated advertising campaign was bagged by the Mullen Lowe Lintas group for the Hector Beverages brand Paper Boat.

     

    The Lowe Lintas bosses were gracious in their acknowledgment of the works of Ogilvy, even as they scored the need for creativity that’s effective.

     

    This year, the Effie Awards India celebrated its 15th anniversary with a jury panel comprising 285 industry leaders from across Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru representing agency and clients. The winning campaigns represented the most successful national campaigns in marketing communications.  Some of the key categories included were consumer products, consumer durable, Services, Healthcare, Small town and rural marketing etc.

     

    “In an era where marketing budgets are under strain and scrutiny, it is extremely heartening that effectiveness has become the mantra of the marketing and advertising fraternity. The overwhelming response to the Effie 2015 is witness to this, with an all-time high participation of 57 agencies and 603 entries. The fact that the Effie award has become the most coveted trophy on the shelves of marketers and agency alike is the greatest joy for me.” said Ajay Kakar, Chairman, EFFIE India Awards 2015.

     

    Elaborating further on the entries Vikram Sakhuja, 2015 Awards Co-Chairman, EFFIE India Awards 2015, said “The EFFIE’s this time too has it all, the power of insight, non-conventional marketing plans and ultimately a great brand success stories.”

     

    Speaking at the award ceremony Raj Nayak, President of The Advertising Club said “The business environment is constantly changing and it is imperative that we align ourselves these changes to meet the expectations of our clients. I take this opportunity to appreciate and congratulate all the winners and my industry colleagues who are driving and leading this change.”
