  • Rejig @ MSM. Frmr Star Plus head Pantvaidya to steer SET. Sneha Rajani to watch on movies, Anooj ‘Sab’ Kapoor to also head new venture

    It’s been in the work as per the grapevine. Multi-Screen Media Private Limited (MSM) has announced that Sneha Rajani, will assume the position of Deputy President and Head, MSM Motion Pictures. Nachiket Pantvaidya, who has recently joined the network, takes over as Senior. Executive VP & Business Head, Sony Entertainment Television (SET). Anooj Kapoor, will assume additional responsibilities as Senior Executive VP and Business Head, SAB, and also a new initiative in the Hindi entertainment space.

    Said N P Singh, CEO, MSM on the announcement, “I am certain that Sneha, Nachiket and Anooj will revitalize and provide fresh perspective to their respective areas of responsibility. Each brings unique strengths to grow the business and we wish them the best in their new roles. I am confident that 2014 will be a year of innovation and growth for MSM.”

     

    Ms Rajani, who has been Business Head, Sony Entertainment Television, will have end-to-end responsibility for MSM Motion Pictures and will chart the success and future of that business as a key force in movie production. She has been associated with MSM for over 15 years and has previously been Business Head, Max, which she launched and led for 10 years before assuming responsibility of the flagship GEC.

     

    Mr Pantvaidya who was the Business Head of Star Plus and also held several roles in the Star India network, including being the Head of Star Pravah and MD of FOX Television Studios will now head SET. An IIM Ahmedabad alumnus, Nachiket has had stints with BBC and Disney in the past. He has also held several positions in MSM from 1996 to 2004.

     

    Meanwhile, Mr Kapoor will With the success of SAB, Anooj has demonstrated capability for building differentiated audiences for the network. Anooj has been with MSM since 2007. Prior to joining MSM, Anooj worked with Colgate Palmolive as product manager, Lowe Lintas as Creative Director and also ran his own production advertising company. He has a Masters in English Literature and a MBA from SP Jain Institute of Management Studies.

    The opening ceremony of one of today’s most popular and expensive sporting properties may have matched its impressive track record over the years. And the organisers could thank celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, rapper Pitbull et al who were joined in force by cricket legends as they steered their way into winning the hearts of the audiences. In fact, the viewership numbers being predicted from the opening ceremony this year is expected to exceed 55 million, a fact that is being reported extensively even across foreign media.

     

    There’s no doubting the effort that has been put in by the organisers and broadcast partner Set Max as the task facing them this year was winning back the audiences that had gone adrift over past few seasons. Apart from a string of new measures and a high-profile marketing campaign, the buzz that was created around IPL 6 was dubbed as being the loudest so far, or so is the claim. Much of the credit to that is being owed to ace choreographer Farah Khan who bought in an element of newness this year with some signature moves involving cricket.

     

    Highlighting the experience this year, Neeraj Vyas, Business Head, Max said, “Firstly, the sentiments have been very positive around the IPL. It follows India’s recent performance against Australia which has kind of boosted cricket sentiments in the country. The other thing about the IPL is that it is cricket of the highest quality and degree and is extremely competitive and edgy, but there is also a lot of entertainment value attached to it. For example, the IPL campaign that we did around IPL this year is very entertainment-led and had director-choreographer Farah Khan playing host. As you’ll observe she is advocating everyone to not just sit but to be a part of the game by dancing to three key moves commonly associated with cricket – fours, sixes and falling wickets.”

     

    In fact the campaign has been a huge hit on the online space where it has crossed the 2 million mark on YouTube. “So the whole scale around IPL is much bigger this year than last year. It definitely has managed to arouse enough hype and curiosity. In fact if you see our marketing budgets, we have invested 15 per cent more than last year. There has been a substantial effort that has gone behind the marketing campaign this year. The same can be reflected through the huge buzz and reach that can be sensed everywhere and across all platforms.”

     

    Not to be left behind in the production department, Set Max has gone the extra mile this year where its studio and expert panelists are concerned. Affirmed Mr Vyas, “We have a brand new set of Extraaa Innings this time around; it is a set that is bigger than any other set that you’ll see in recent times. And joining Gaurav Kapur and Samir Kochhar will be two new hosts, Karishma Kotak and Rochelle Maria Rao. The there’ll also be big names associated with cricket like Navjot Sidhu, Harsha Bhogle, Ajay Jadeja and Sunil Gavaskar. What we’ve also done is added new names to the roster like Kapil Dev and Rameez Raja. They’ll primarily be driving the show in Hindi. So it’s also the best line-up that we have where studio names are concerned.”

     

    Not wanting to stop at that the broadcasters sensed immense opportunity in reaching out to the masses beyond the metros and tier 2, 3 towns and who until now were denied their share of voice in the affair. The wishes of the many Indians who reside in far-off towns and rural belts will be realised as they can enjoy the matches in Hindi as well. Asserted Vyas, “Another new addition this year is the airing of content in Hindi. That was done to essentially reach out to interior pockets of India who are more comfortable with Hindi commentary. Also, if you saw our coverage last year we had upped our quotient of Hindi usage on XIDs. So there was a lot of Hindi banter that happened between the expert panellists which was a decision that was taken intentionally. And this year we have just expanded that by having a dedicated Hindi feed. So the idea was to reach more and more people.”

     

    Number-crunching affair

    It has been widely reported on how the IPL this year has heeded the demands of the marketers and have offered them advertising value worth a steal. According to estimates, the channel expects to earn close to Rs 900 crore overall this year and much of this will come from top clients like PepsiCo, which is the title sponsor for the tournament, having signed a deal in the range of Rs 50-60 crore. Set Max has also sealed associate sponsor deals with eight clients including Godrej, Havells, Panasonic, Karbonn Tabs, Usha International, Cadbury, Tata Docomo and Samsung Mobiles.

     

    Highlighting the response received from the clients this year, particularly new entrant PepsiCo, Mr Vyas said, “The response from the clients goes to show that IPL is still a massive brand and secondly, as I said earlier, it is the reflection around the positive buzz surrounding Indian cricket at the moment. So there has been an extremely positive sentiment from the viewers as well as the advertisers.”

     

    He added, “Client-wise if you ask me, the best thing to have happened is Pepsi’s association with IPL – who are the on-ground as well as on-air partners. Given their past history, they will naturally bring in their own flavour to the tournament. I know for a fact that they are planning some special campaigns that will begin during the IPL. In a sense, Pepsi probably understands cricket better than most other brands as they have been associated with the sport for around 15-20 years. So one can expect them to bring in their own creativity around cricket, which is always entertaining to say the least.”

     

    Confirming Mr Vyas’ sentiments, Vinit Karnik, Head of Sports and Live practice at GroupM ESP said through a statement, “We’ve been part of IPL since its inception and we strongly believe that IPL is India’s biggest and the most powerful marketing platform for brands to leverage the combined appeal of cricket and entertainment. This season has been a busy and fruitful season. We had the opportunity to work closely with the Sun Group’s Sunrisers and have enabled the new franchise get off to strong start with 10 on-ground official partnership/sponsorships including Make My Trip, 7UP, Garnier, Kingfisher, Live In Jeans, Manyavar, Sheltrex, RN Sports etc…. We also advised Vodafone backed by a comprehensive valuation exercise based on proprietary data and insights which helped them build a case to renew their on-ground associate sponsorship for another 5 years. Other high profile deals which we managed to facilitate this year included Bajaj Allianz and Mumbai Indians, Flying Machine and Royal Challengers Bangalore among others.” The total value of all the on-ground deals enabled and activated by GroupM ESP in IPL 6 is estimated at US $ 15 mn.

     

    On to another important number that’s watched closely by all, the ratings for IPL 6 is expected to outdo that put up by the previous season. According to statistics released by MEC-Meritus, average TV rating for the league stage is expected to go up from 3.8 last year to 3.9 – an increase of 2.6% (15+ years, Male/Female, SEC ABC). Also, MI (23%), Chennai (19%) and KKR (14%) are the most popular teams while support for Hyderabad has gone up by 200% (2% to 6%). Further, the study notes that Sachin Tendulkar (80), MS Dhoni (79), Yuvraj Singh (76), Virat Kohli (74) and Virender Sehwag (73) are the most popular Indian players in the League while Chris Gayle (60), Ricky Ponting (55), Brett Lee (51) and Kevin Pietersen (50) are the most popular foreign players.

    T Gangadhar, Managing Director, MEC India, said, “Our study suggests that the IPL seems to have matured as a property. The study clearly establishes that ratings in the first phase (first 18 games) impact the fate of the entire league. With Pepsi activating their title sponsorship in a big way, the BCCI launching the IPL Fantasy League and India’s strong performance against Australia, the first stage of the league could get further momentum.”

     

    According to Mr Vyas, in terms of ratings expectations, “People need to realise that IPL is now a mature and a long tournament that last 76 games spanning 54 days. Nothing of this scale ever exists in the country. In fact about 30 per cent of the games are played in the afternoon…so despite all these ground realities it sustained an average rating of 3.5 last year, which according to me is nothing short of a miracle. If you look at GEC shows today, no one manages to retain audiences over such long periods. And this despite the fact that about 30 per cent of the matches are played in the afternoon. So we will be happy if we are able to retain the ratings at that level or even better it to around 4 or so.”

    Agreeing with Mr Vyas, Amin Lakhani, Principal Partner, Mindshare said, “I’ve always maintained from the start that where cricket and especially IPL is concerned, there has been a positive sentiment observed. It kind of picks up in terms of popularity and buzz closer to the start of the tournament. The thing about IPL is that it is now a time-tested property; only last year was an aberration. It has always been a winning property and will continue to do so. It is too early to write it off. And frankly, I am not even bothered about viewership as it a 76-match affair spread across 54 days…whatever ratings it has achieved has been brilliant so far. I can’t think any other property that has managed to do so in such a scale and manner. Where viewership is concerned, I feel even if it manages to hold at 4 or above would be a very good thing.”

     

     

    Mona Jain

    But feelings seem to be mixed for Mona Jain, CEO of Vivaki Exchange, who remarked, “I expect the ratings to display a similar trend to that of last year. Also, where the campaign is concerned I believe they should have started that much earlier on mediums like television, outdoor, radio etc. And the fact that IPL is an established property maybe that’s the reason the broadcaster maybe wanting to push the property closer to the start of the event. I guess more emphasis was paid on leveraging the event then trying to build it up.”

     

    While there may be a few naysayers who’ll be raising questions on the waning demand of the sport in India, SET MAX would want to prove them wrong by posting numbers a notch better than at least the previous season. One will have to wait and watch if King Khan managed to work his charm to at least get the inaugural event off to a flying start.

     

  • AdStrat: Trusting Max

    Name of the Campaign/Ad: India- ‘For life’

     

    The Brief: Max is a multi business corporate offering services in healthcare, health insurance and life insurance amongst others. While the Max brand architecture has undergone a change, the new communication must build trust for the corporate brand Max, by virtue of which people can choose its constituent brands with more confidence than their competitors. The three guiding principles/ guardrails that govern Max are Sevabhav, Excellence, Credibility; the communication must be reflective of this.

     

    Research insights: The objective of the campaign is two fold. Firstly, Max will announce its new brand positioning of ‘For life’. Secondly, this gives Max the opportunity to consolidate all its service offerings under the Max umbrella. Establishing Max’s credentials as a corporate powerhouse. As this is the first time Max Corporate is advertising.

     

    The thought process behind the creative: The brand persona of Max India is that of a Jeevan Saarthi, who will navigate you in your quest for health, wealth and happiness. The TVC uses a simple yet strong visual device of a trampoline to connote the key message that Max India helps you bounce back in life. Various interactions are built around it reflective of the values on which the Max foundation is laid.

     

    The film opens on a beautiful morning where you see multiple trampolines placed in a cityscape. Seeing this, passerbys are surprised and get curious to check it out. The film is used to establish how people of different age groups, though apprehensive at first, set out to experience the trampoline which is really a visual metaphor for ‘Max’.

     

    The concept of the campaign stems from the brand personality itself. In life, one is faced with many moments of truth – some challenging, some decisive, some life changing and in these moments of truth, it would be nice to have someone to fall back on, so that you can bounce back in life. The concept being that in different highs and lows of life, Max will always be there to help you bounce back.

     

    Media vehicles chosen: TVC, Cinema, Digital, Print, BTL

     

    Key issues kept in mind while executing the ad: Soumitra Karnik, National Creative Director, Dentsu India Group, “It was a fabulous experience doing this ad. It was almost like doing a large flash mob. There were over 500 people on location, six cameras placed everywhere from in between the crowd, to the rooftops of buildings, in moving cars and even one that was attached to a jumper’s knee.”

     

    What is the differentiating factor about the ad? Mr Karnik said, “A lot of people did not even know they were being filmed. We just let the people lose their fear and inhibitions and just enjoy jumping on the trampolines. And they did, a whole lot of people did just that. Which was exactly what we wished to communicate that life is for living to the fullest and in all the ups and downs, Max will be right there to help them bounce back, just like a trampoline. To enhance this childlike exuberance, we even used a six year old girl’s voice to sing the ever popular and very apt ‘sar jo tera chakraaye, ya dil dooba jaaye” track.”

  • Sony’s stake hike allows MSM flexibility: Man Jit Singh. Regional/niche channels on anvil

    This is one soap that Sony Entertainment Television bosses are happy to see the end of. Over two decades ago, a group of seven entertainment industry biggies (including then superstar Jackie Shroff) and Sony Pictures got together to launch Sony Entertainment Television.  There were also rumours of senior minister Sharad Pawar’s brother-in-law Sadanand Sule having a stake. Multi Screen Media, as the company was called, had a complex shareholding, as is the case with many Indian corporations.

     

    Four years back, the minority shareholders were in a legal tangle which was finally resolved, but it was evident that they wanted to cash out soonest.

     

    So when the communique reaches media inboxes on Sony Pictures’s announcement of an agreement to acquired around 32 per cent of MSM’s shares currently held by Grandway Global Holdings Limited and Atlas Equifin Private Limited. The transaction, which will bring Sony’s stake in MSM to a little over 94 per cent, will close by end-December 2012.

     

    Under the terms of the agreement for this acquisition, aggregate cash consideration of $271 million will be paid by SPT to Grandway and Atlas, subject necessary government approvals, with $145 mn to be paid by December 2012 when the transaction ends and the balance $126 million will be paid in in three equal annual installments starting from the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014.

     

    “SPT has enjoyed great success with our channels in India and this acquisition further demonstrates our commitment to entertaining Indian audiences,” said Andy Kaplan, president, worldwide networks, SPT in a statement. “We’d especially like to thank Grandway and Atlas for their entrepreneurial spirit that helped to get this venture off the ground 17 years ago.”

     

    MSM chief executive Man Jit Singh (who as a Sony representative was chairman of the Board even when Kunal Dasgupta was CEO) spoke to MxMIndia’s Pradyuman Maheshwari from London on phone. Excerpts from the interview:

     

    This thing has been going back and forth for a while between Grandway, Atlas and Atlas.

    Yes, it’s been some time.

     

    So, is it only a cash transaction or with there be a non-cash consideration as well?

    As stated in the press release that it is $271 mn transaction of which there is a upfront payment of $145 mn and then three equal installments.

     

    And the balance 6-odd per cent?

    The balance 6 per cent  is held by a fund called the Capital Group which is not part of this transaction.

     

    Capital has had some stake for a while…

    Yes, they’ve held the stake from 2001. The Indian stakeholders are exiting. Capital Group is another transaction.

     

    Are you happy with the 1 bn-odd valuation of the company?

    We are delighted with the valuation which happened at the end of an extensive private equity process which determine the market value and then Sony stepped in and decided to acquire the stake, which for us is great news. Because now: a) it show Sony’s commitment towards India and to the channel operation and b) it will give us a lot of flexibility in running our business. And we’ll be able to make investments as we go forward. So, we are delighted with this news.

     

    In the year around 1999, I think the evaluation was something around 2.5 bn. And that was of course the first high that Sony had reached. And now it’s come down quite a bit.

    As you know, perhaps it was a little later. But as you know during the dotcom period the valuations which were thrown around were extraordinarily high. I think that it was a moment in time, the markets have settled and businesses have fairly matured and I think the valuations are where they are and they are correct.

     

    You mentioned that this will allow some more freedom for doing various things so anything on the anvil. You’ve spoken about regional channels in the past and you did buy this Bengali channel. Anything more…

    As you know, we are in the process of acquiring a stake in Maa TV which we have announced already and that will continue. We’ll take opportunities as they come and we now have the flexibility to move quickly and consummate those opportunities. And we look forward to doing that.

     

    Is there any particular direction that you are looking at?

    We are certainly looking at regional channels as we are interested in regional channel space. And as you know we have made a major investment in our sports channels. And we expect that sport is an area where you have to continue to buy rights when they become available because you have to bid for them. And we’ll be in a position to make those investments when they come to us.

     

    But those investments you have made. Sony is already investing a fair bit for this acquisition and you’ll have to make a lot more investments for all of this.

    Correct.

     

    That mandate you have received…

    Yes. By investing in MSM, Sony has shown its willingness and enthusiasm for the Indian market. And they are very very open to continue….

     

    Is there anything else you are looking at other than channels because digitalization will allow all that to happen?

    Absolutely. We believe that digitalization is going to make us able to deliver different kind of content to smaller segments of viewership. So we believe that there will be opportunity to create niche channel. This will certainly help us by allowing us to look at all those opportunities. We believe there is a good amount of things that can be done over the next two-three years.

     

    The last two years have been tremendous for MSM because we have Sony doing so well, SAB is doing so well and IPL hasn’t been too bad. So would you credit that for the way things are right now and at Sony’s commitment?

    I think you have to look at Sony’s commitment which was committed in the good times as well as in the bad times to MSM. It is only that its bigger commitment is to the Indian market. Sony has always believed that India is one of the most important of the BRIC countries and it’s a place where Sony must invest and grow the market. So there has been a commitment to India. So we should give them credit for being consistent in their beliefs that India should be one of the key markets in which certain focus is on. And not only that but on the channel business, our electronic business side, it is a growth market for us on both sides.

     

    And will we see some synergies with all of that all, in the near future?

    Absolutely. This will give us much more flexibility to be able to create synergies between our electronic groups and our channel business. And we see opportunities to bring things together.

     

    Is there a possibility of a change of the company name now that Sony’s ownership is near-total? Perhaps Sony Entertainment Television…

    Why you don’t like MSM?

     

    No, I love it. One has got used to it. But still the fact is that now since it’s a Sony it could well be called that. Is it on the cards?

    I’ll be honest; we don’t have any plans to do that. But thank you, I’ll think about it (laughs). I’m quite happy with MSM, maybe because we all came up with it. There is no such plan. We are quite satisfied with it. Also, the channel is Sony Entertainment Television. So, I’m not sure if we’ll need to change the company name. Let’s put it this way, there has been no talk on this.

  • JWT crafts new ‘shuruaat’ for post-IPL Max

    Television channel Max has announced its latest brand campaign with the theme ‘Shuruaat Yahin Se’ . Created and conceptualized by JWT, the creative agency for Max, the campaign comprises three films – featuring an old couple, a politician and an Olympic shooter.

     

    The campaign highlights the monotony in the lives of these characters and how certain movies that they watch on the channel change their life for the better. Directed by ad film maker Piyush Raghani of Old School Films, these will be released across television, social media and online forums.

     

    Meanwhile, the channel also sports an all-new packaging. Charlieco, a Los Angeles-based agency has brought about this new look-and-feel. The music score mirrors and accentuates the visual themes of the packaging and has been created by the musical duo Salim- Sulaiman.

     

    Speaking on the new initiatives, Neeraj Vyas, Executive Vice President and Business Head, Max said: “‘Shuruaat Yahin Se’ aptly brings alive the central communication theme that Max gives its viewers the power to change their life for the better by showcasing the best of inspiring and thought provoking Hindi cinema. I am sure we will be successful in further engaging loyal viewers while bringing in new audiences.”
