  • MxMIndia Comment: Sad. If Publicis Worldwide stays away from the Abby

    MxMIndia Comment

    By Pradyuman Maheshwari

While every agency has the right to participate or stay away from the Abby, the Publicis Worldwide decision to not send entries for Abby 2017 is shocking. And sad.

According to a report in The Economic Times on Tuesday, the new Publicis Communications CEO Saurabh Varma attributed the reason to a desire to focus more on the big large international shows.“Both Bobby and I are aligned on that decision,” Varma told ET. The reference being to Bobby Pawar, Managing Director and Chief Creative Officer, Publicis Worldwide.

The decision is on expected lines given Varma’s stated belief that Leo Burnett will not participate in the Abby. In fact since Varma took charge in November 2013. Leo Burnett hasn’t participated in the Abby since the 2014 edition.

While it’s clear that Varma and Leo Burnett and Publicis Communications (the holding company of PublicisGroupe creative and PR agencies of which he was appointed CEO in December 2016) do not have problems with the Advertising Club, since Leo Burnett has been participating in the Effies conducted by the Ad Club, the decision to stay away from the Abby is worrying.

Let’s steer clear of the possible embarrassment it has caused to Nakul Chopra, longstanding CEO Publicis Worldwide who is also President of the Advertising Agencies Association of India, the apex body of advertising agencies in the country. That’s something Messrs Varma, Chopra and Pawar need to discuss internally.

Our bigger worry is that yet another key player in the Indian advertising is going to stay away from participating in the Abby awards. The Mullen Lowe Lintas Group, Ogilvy and Leo Burnett have already been sitting out. There are also some small agencies like Creativeland Asia who have had issues with the Abby. McCann Worldgroup chose to return last year, albeit with a token participation. This year, hopefully, it will return with more entries.

As mentioned earlier, it’s not that the biggies have any problems with the Ad Club. They participate in the Effie with much enthusiasm.

But the boycott of the Abby doesn’t speak too well for the industry and the Abby award. Agency bosses say that the non-participation isn’t a dampner for their creative teams.

It must be added here that the decision to stay away from award holds true for Kyoorius Advertising Awards too for Lowe and Leo. Ogilvy does participate and win big at Kyoorius.

It’s critical the Advertising Club and Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) and industry honchos get together and find a solution to the problem.

Over the years, the processes of the Abby Awards have been streamlined and cleansed.

We have heard murmurs that entry fees to these awards are a stretch on agency budgets. Perhaps. There are suggestions that it should be more of clients and not just agencies who should be on the jury. There are also some who say one of the reason why some don’t participate is because they haven’t done enough good work.

It’s important that the industry works jointly to save an awards event that is its own.

  • Byju’s celebrates the joy of children learning on their own in latest ad campaign

    By A Correspondent

Education platform Byju’s latest ad campaign celebrates the fact that if children love learning, they will learn on their own. Breaking the myths around smartphones being used just for entertainment purposes by children only – this campaign tells the story of how these devices can become an integral part of a student’s learning journey today. Offering rich content, interactives and videos, technology-enabled education has made learning fun, effective and engaging like never before.

Conceptualised and created by Lowe Lintas and the Byju’s media team– this campaign has been built on the central thought of the 2016 campaign – ‘Come fall in love with learning’. The campaign reinstates the simple fact that if children love learning, learning any concept becomes more fun and easy. In fact, it is important for students to become lifelong learners.

Showcasing everyday scenes between parents and children, this campaign emphasises that parents need not worry when their children are learning from Byju’s on their smartphones. It also shows how children are becoming conscious of their academic responsibilities and catching up on their school lessons using Byju’s Learning App, without adult supervision.

Said Mrinal Mohit, COO, Byju’s: “At Byju;s, creating quality and seamless learning experiences for students has been our key focus area. Parents often think that children use smartphone for entertainment only. This campaign has been crafted to help parents understand the importance of learning through smart devices and how the concept of using smartphone as a learning device is becoming widely popular. In fact, the TV commercial depicts real-life scenarios that students learning from smart devices would have gone through at some point or the other. We are confident that this new campaign will help us instill trust in the fact that better learning experiences enable students become self-learners and learn for the love of learning, rather than the fear of exams.”

Added Arun Iyer, Chief Creative Officer, Lowe Lintas: “Continuing with our central thought of ‘Come fall in love in with learning’ we probed further into parent and child relationships when it comes to studies. While the first campaign attempted to break the myth that kids don’t like to study, this time we brought in the angle of parents prying into what their kids do on smartphone. Built on the stereotype that children are more technology savvy than their parents and the fact that parents often think that their children only engage in trivialities on smart phones – we brought out the truth that children start enjoying studies, especially when it meets with their technology acumen. Hence, showing the role of Byju’s in a student’s life and learning process.

  • Flipkart Fashion asserts its uniqueness in campaign by Lowe Lintas Bangalore

    By A Correspondent

Leading online e-commerce playerFlipkart seeks to assist shoppers on all issues related to fashion. By launching Flipkart Fashion, it seeks to establish Flipkart as a destination for “affordable trendy fashion” by landing the proposition of being a one-stop solution to all fashion related confusions. Through Flipkart Fashion, the online player is providing a method to the madness of spotting the right trend by making trends – handpicked by top fashion experts, accessible to its consumers.

To communicate this new offering, Flipkart has unveiled a high decibel integrated marketing campaign across India. The marketing campaign would span the online and offline platforms and reach out to a cross section of the populace in various regional languages. The communication has been flagged off by the launch of two video films on both the online and offline platforms.

Conceptualised by Lowe Lintas Bangalore, the films promote Flipkart as the one stop shop for all needs around fashion. The films have been devised based on the insight that even though fashion as a category has scale and accessibility on Flipkart, it is still not a go-to platform for trendy fashion in the minds of consumers. Flipkart Fashion aims to change this perception and position itself as a trendy yet affordable destination for its consumers.

Commenting on the marketing objective, Shoumyan Biswas – Head, Marketing, Commerce Platform, Flipkart said, “Flipkart is the market leader when it comes to fashion amongst e-commerce portals. Being a market leader, it is our responsibility to grow penetration of fashion across all consumer segments and need states. Also, fashion being a profitable segment with high growth, it is one of our top priorities. Our scale and depth in this category have helped us decode some key consumer truths. One of the biggest consumer aspirations is the desire to be “trendy”. We realized that this desire often goes hand in hand with “confusion” of finding out what is “in trend”. Basis this knowledge, we created a campaign around the proposition of “Being Trendy made Easy” by curating trendy selection by top fashion experts and offering them at affordable price points.”

The films highlight the confusions related to trends surrounding fashion and how Flipkart Fashion is an assured solution that one can rely on. Be it about the ever-changing fashion trends to conflicting advices on trends and having to choose between too many trends…there are many confusions that confound and disorient the consumer. But with Flipkart Fashion that has over 100 stylists highlight emerging trends on the platform, users are to find only the best of the latest fashion. The films sign off with the line that ‘If it’s trendy, it’s on Flipkart’, which establishes the point that Flipkart Fashion offers users with only the latest trends.

Highlighting the creative idea behind the films, Rajesh Ramaswamy, Executive Director, Lowe Lintas Bangalore said, “Fashion is something so relative, that it’s near impossible to wrap your head around it. The confusion about ever changing trends and the fashion world in general is something that everyone experiences. And yet, we are all conscious about what we wear and also about all the judgement that will be passed by our peers in the case we get it wrong. In the film, we have captured this very confusion and fear and provided a solution for it. With over 100 top stylists picking the latest trends for you, Flipkart fashion clears all confusion and lets you simply choose.”

  • Cargill Foods appoints Lowe Lintas as creative agency

    By A Correspondent

Leading FMCG company Cargill Foods India has appointed Lowe Lintas for the creative duties for consumer brands – from edible oils to atta.

The pitch was announced for Cargill Foods India’s brands, such as the Leonardo range of Olive Oils, Nature Fresh range of edible oils, Nature Fresh Sampoorna Chakki Atta, Sweekar Refined Sunflower Oil, Gemini Refined Cooking Oil, Sunflower Vanaspati and Rath Vanaspati. On this new journey, Neelima Burra, Chief Marketing Officer at Cargill Foods said, “Edible Oil is a highly fragmented and regionalised market. Cargill India follows multi brand approach and micro-marketing strategy to win in market place. Looking at the business dynamics, in last two years we have rejigged our portfolio and brand positioning. We thank our earlier agencies Leo Burnett and FCB Ulka, who helped us to re-position and re-launch our brands. I really appreciate their efforts in helping us evolve our campaigns and make them noticeable. We are extremely choosy of our approach to businesses and marketing. While our products and brands are doing well in top league, we believe customized campaign approach is pivotal for success in Edible Oil Market. The brief we shared and the ideas proposed by Lowe Lintas were in complete sync with the ethos of the brands which were pitched for.  We are excited on this association to lead all our brands to a leadership position in consumer’s hearts and minds“.

Said Naveen Gaur, President, Lowe Lintas, Delhi: “We are truly excited about our partnership with Cargill. At Lowe, we have a tradition of building brands which not only enjoy mass support but also become a part of everyday conversation. And that’s exactly been the crux of our conversations with Cargill. Looking forward to create some great pieces of work!”

  • Yellow Diamond unveils new campaign featuring superstar Salman Khan

    By A Correspondent

Yellow Diamond has rolled out a TVC campaign “Dildaar Hai Hum” featuring Indian Bollywood celebrity Salman Khan. Yellow Diamond is the brand of Prataap Snacks, which has a diversified portfolio of savoury snacks which includes extruded snacks, chips and namkeen in varied range of flavours that caters to the Indian taste buds.

The commercials begin with a musical shot which opens with a funky guy sharing a selfie while eating snacks and actor Salman Khan appears and detests his way of sharing. The actor then whistles and a troop of dancers appear, dressed in sportswear. The actor then explains the meaning of sharing by showing his quirky dance moves on “Share karo toh dil se” soundtrack. This soundtrack is the recreation of the song “Selfie le-le re” from Bollywood movie, Bajrangii Bhaijaan.

Said Amit Kumat, MD and CEO, Prataap Snacks: “Through this TVC, we have tried to convey the age old message that ‘Sharing is caring’, with the entire TVC campaign focusing on sharing. With “Dildaar Hai Hum” as our brand philosophy, we aspire to be loved and accepted by our consumers. The TVC concept brings this out in a lively and humorous way. The presence of superstar Salman Khan is the major highlight of the TVC campaign which contributes towards creating a mass appeal for our brand and products.”

Speaking about the conceptualisation, Arun Iyer, Chief Creative Officer, Lowe Lintas said: “The campaign thought of ‘Dildaar hain hum’ is specifically directed towards the youth who are highly influenced by technology today. One trend that the youth are addicted to is sharing and posting activities on social media platforms. The video film urges the youth to drift away from this habit of being obsessed with only digital media and rather focus on sharing other aspects of life that are more meaningful. This is because ‘real sharing digital se nahin, dil se ki jaati hai’. We believe this trait will be well-accepted and adopted by the consumers and will ensure that the Yellow Diamond brand finds its place in the hearts of the consumers.”

  • Flipkart announces its biggest integrated brand communication campaign

    By A Correspondent

There are a host of dates earmarked in India’s annual calendar where consumers wait with bated breath to partake of the celebrations. Clearly figuring in this list is the ‘The Big Billion Days’ (BBD), that has been made popular by Flipkart over the past two years. As a concept, Big Billion Day was launched in 2014 as a one-day sale initiative across categories. But over time, it has moved to a five-day full-fledged sale event with different categories opening on different days.

As opposed to The Big Billion Days 2015, which was an ‘App only’ sale, this year the sale is being extended across all platforms – App, website and m-site. To re-establish its connect this year with the users, Flipkart has announced the rollout of a full-blown integrated campaign that is one of the largest marketing initiatives being undertaken by the company this year.

“We aim to get 30% more reach this year with our campaign for Big Billion Days and will spend more than 20% of our budgets on digital channels to do this,” said Samardeep Subandh, Chief Marketing Officer at Flipkart. As part of the marketing exercise, Flipkart has rolled out a series of videos that will attempt to inform the consumers that it is not just another sale event but the ‘Sale Event’ of the year. The key message that is derived from the campaign sums up the entire event – “ITNE mein ITNAAAA milega”. It communicates that no matter what one’s budget is, BBD increases its value with the unbeatable offers it has across categories. So staying within budget, one can upgrade or buy more and not let the budget dictate one’s shopping aspirations.

Conceptualised and executed by Lowe Lintas Bangalore, the brief shared to the agency was to land the fact that BBD is not just another sale event but rather it is the ‘Sale Event’ in India. To cut across the clutter and differentiate itself, Flipkart opted to use kids and show them in witty yet real situations.

Highlighting the creative thought-process behind the campaign, Arun Iyer, Chief Creative Officer, Lowe Lintas said, “Like most important events, The Big Billion Days have come to be an important event in the Indian context. These are the days when consumers unleash their inhibitions and go on a shopping spree with much gusto. The campaign thought ‘ITNE mein ITNAAAA milega’ is a colloquial expression that captures how Indians like it when they receive something extra by paying a small sum. This thought has been captured well by the kids that act as orchestrators of the message. It was an exciting campaign to work on, and we hope consumers like it as much.”
