  • IAMAI report shows spurt in internet users across verticals

    The latest Internet Economy Watch, a report published jointly by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB has noted that the number of online users visiting the mobile segment has gone up from 6.31 million in January 2013 to 20.70 million in January 2014, registering a YoY growth of 228 percent. According to the data captured from major e-tailing sites in the monthly tracker, online visit to branded apparels and designer label segments have increased by 113 percent and 41 percent respectively, when compared to the numbers of corresponding month last year. The online users visit to spa and restaurant segment saw a decline from 0.76 million in January 2013 to 0.54 million in January 2014.

    According to the January data, the number of profile uploads on matrimonial sites also witnessed an increase. Profile uploads on matrimonial sites increased to 1.96 million in January 2013 as compared to 0.85 million in the corresponding month last year, a YoY growth of 130 percent.

    The monthly tracker further indicates 56.44 million people accessed various e-tailing sites. There were 2641.22 million page views in the category. The user reach for job and matrimonial websites is 29.37million and 18.95 million respectively with 1166.10 million and 495.08 million respective page views. Online travel segment has reach with 29.99 million reach and 1905.77 million page views.

  • Mobile device usage rises 173%: IAMAI

    The surge in interest of mobile devices and smart phones can be gauged from the latest Internet Economy Watch, published jointly by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB. The segment has witnessed 173% y-o-y growth in July 2013 with 12.70 million hits in July 2013 as compared to 4.66 million hits in the corresponding month last year.

     

    The branded apparel segment witnessed 9.95 million hits in July 2013 as compared to 5.29 million hits in July 2012, a y-o-y increase of 88%. The online user visits to designer footwear segment increased from 2.04 million hits in July 2012 to 2.21 million hits in July 2013. A significant increase y-o-y growth of 107% for jewellery segment has been registered with 3.65 million hits in July 2013 as compared to 1.76 million hits in July 2012.

    As per the data for July, while the online booking of air tickets decreased from 1.95 million hits in July 2012 to 1.84 million in July 2013, there has been a marginal increase in online booking of railway tickets from 6.53 million in July 2012 to 6.70 million in July 2013.

    The number of resume uploads in July 2013 were 3.12 million as compared to 2.60 million in corresponding month last year. The profile uploads on matrimonial websites was 1.91 million in July 2013 as compared to 1.67 million in July 2012, a y-o-y growth of 14%.

  • Online booking of air tickets registers 7% growth

    The Internet Economy Watch Report for the month of September 2012, released by the Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) indicates a marginal growth of 7 percent in online booking of air tickets when compared with the numbers of corresponding month last year. Air tickets booked online in September 2012 were 1.55 million as compared to 1.46 million in September 2011. The growth rate is the lowest when compared with the numbers of the previous months of the current financial year. The online bookings on irctc.com witnessed y-o-y growth of 17 percent with 5.77 million online bookings in September 2012 as compared to 4.92 million in September 2011.

    According to the data captured from prominent e-tailing sites in the monthly tracker, the online user visit to mobile phone and book segment has increased by 17 percent and 27 percent respectively, when compared to the numbers of corresponding month last year. A significant increase has been registered in the online user visit to branded apparel segment. The number of hits has increased to 5.99 million in September 2012 from 4.62 million in September 2011. The online user visit to footwear segment increased from 3.94 million in September 2011 to 4.49 million in September 2012, a y-o-y increase of 14 percent.

    In September 2012, the number of resume uploads on job portals and profile uploads on matrimonial sites has indicated a y-o-y growth of 6 percent and 13 percent respectively. While the number of resume uploads in September 2012 was 1.75 million as compared to 1.65 million in corresponding month last year, the number of profile upload on matrimonial websites was 1.18 million in September 2012 as compared to 1.04 million September 2011.

  • Books & mobiles enter IAMAI’s monthly tracker

    The Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has released the ‘Internet Economy Watch’ for the month of July 2012. ‘Internet Economy Watch’ the monthly tracker by IAMAI, is based on absolute numbers captured from various relevant sites, encapsulates online usage for E-tailing, Online Travel and Vertical Classifieds.

     

    In the July 2012 report, IAMAI has introduced two new categories – Mobiles and Books. Mobile has infact emerged as the second most popular category among the online consumers i.e. after Branded Apparels. With the exception of Jewellery, all the other e-commerce categories have shown growth in July 2012 as against July 2011. The number of resumes uploaded has continued to decline even in July 2012 as against the previous year whereas the number of matrimonial uploads continued to grow.

     

    So do these trends indicate that consumers in India are fast adapting to online buying? According to Dr Subho Ray, President, IAMAI, consumers have over the years have become more confident about purchasing online. “Definitely, Indian consumers over a period of time have become more confident about purchasing online. The figures from the Internet Economy Watch report for various that how internet savvy Indians have become and how comfortable and confident they are doing online transactions” he said.

     

    Speaking on the kind of response IAMAI has been receiving on the ‘Internet Economic Watch’ report, Dr Ray explained, “The Internet Economy Watch report has helped marketers and brands to map the consumer behaviour online and devise their digital strategy accordingly – to be in sync with the online behaviour of consumers. Having said this, we must also keep in mind that the ‘Internet Economy Watch’ report is at a nascent stage and will be of comprehensive use in the months to come.”

     

    In the months to come IAMAI not only aims to add more categories in the report but, also plans to make the monthly report more comprehensive by giving it a holistic view of usage of internet in India.

    E-Commerce Sites:

    As per the data captured by the report there has been a significant increase in the online user visit to books and designer label category during July 2012 when compared to the numbers of last year. While 1.74 million hits were registered for the books segment in July 2012 as compared to 1.11 million hits in July 2011, designer label segment registered a y-o-y growth of 45 per cent with 2.04 million user visits in July 2012. It is in comparison to 1.41 million user visits in the corresponding period last year.

     

    While branded apparel and footwear segment witnessed a marginal rise, y-o-y growth of 6 percent and 12 percent respectively in number of online user visits in July 2012 as compared to July 2011, Jewellery category saw a decline from 1.84 million hits in July 2011 to 1.76 million hits in July 2012.

     

    Online Travel Portals:

    In e-ticketing segment irctc.com clocked 6.53 million bookings in July 2012 as against 5.23 million in July 2011. The e-ticketing on airlines witnessed a y-o-y growth of 34% with 1.95 million bookings in July 2012 compared to 1.46 million in corresponding month last year.

    Verticals Classifieds:

    Data captured from prominent recruitment websites reveals that the number of resume uploads have gone down from 3.09 million in July 2011 to 2.60 million in July 2012. The matrimonial profile uploads has increased from 2.33 million in July 2011 to 2.47 million in July 2012.

  • IAMAI Internet Economy Watch: E-com continues to surge

    The Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) on August 01 released ‘Internet Economy Watch’ for the month of June 2012. According to the findings, the e-ticketing category with irctc.com (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) and airlines continues to grow robustly. It recorded a year-on-year growth of 36 per cent as compared to the corresponding months last year.

     

    As per the findings from the Internet Economy Watch data released by IAMAI (Internet and Mobile Association of India), there has been an increase in online railway ticketing and air ticketing. But figures for matrimonial profile uploads, activities on e-commerce sites and resume uploads on recruitment sites continue to show decline. Interestingly in the April-June quarter, the month of May has seen the highest traffic of online users across categories.

     

    The Internet Economy Watch data is said to be based on absolute numbers captured from various relevant sites, encapsulating online usage for e-tailing, online travel and vertical classifieds.

     

    In an email interaction with MxMIndia, Dr Subho Ray, President, IAMAI talked about the factors behind the surge of e-ticketing: “Technological advancement and more and more people getting internet savvy coupled with convenience is the key factor leading to the rise in online booking of train and air tickets. Online tickets can now be booked on the move, through mobile, tablets and of course PCs. A deeper PC penetration in rural areas is also one of the reasons for the rise in online booking.”

     

    On the takeaways for brands and marketers from these findings, Dr Ray said: “The Internet Watch Report is a recent initiative by IAMAI and is out with its third report. Going forward, the monthly data will help marketers and brands to map the consumer behaviour online and devise their digital strategy accordingly – to be in sync with the online behaviour of the consumers.”

     

    Besides e-tailing, online travel and vertical classifieds, in the near future IAMAI is expected to introduce newer categories: “Yes, going forward we would be incorporating more segments” added Dr Ray.

     

    Some of the finding of the report are:

    Online Travel Portals:

    The report states that 5.83 million bookings were registered on irctc.com in June 2012 as compared to 4.30 million in June 2011, whereas airlines witnessed 1.45 million online bookings for the month of June 2012 as compared to 1.07 million in the corresponding period last year. During the quarter April-June 2012, irctc.com registered an all time high of 6.22 million e-bookings in May 2012, while e-ticketing with airlines touched 1.92 million bookings in April 2012.

    E-tailing Sites:

    Data captured from 29 e-tailing sites reports an annual increase in online user visit to spa & restaurant category from 0.61 million in June 2011 to 0.75 million in June 2012, showing a year on year growth of 24 per cent. The branded apparel category witnessed 5.39 million visits in June 2012 as compared to 4.40 million visits in the corresponding period last year. On the other hand, designer labels segment saw a y-o-y growth of 21 per cent with 1.73 million online visits registered in June 2012 as compared to 1.43 million visits in June 2011.

    Vertical Classifieds:

    While the number of resume uploads on recruitment sites has gone down from 3.43 million in June 2011 to 2.44 million in June 2012, the profile uploads on matrimonial sites is marginally up from 2.34 million in June 2011 to 2.36 million in June 2012.

    Online Traffic:

    During the quarter April-June 2012, the month of May has seen the highest traffic of online users with e-ticket bookings at irctc.com, resume uploads on recruitment sites and visits in e-tailing of branded apparels, footwear and designer labels.

  • IAMAI: E-commerce witnesses upward swing

    There has been a surge in the e-ticketing category of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (irctc.com). In May 2012, IRCTC recorded over 6.22 million bookings as against 4.02 million bookings in May 2011, thus witnessing a year on year growth of 55 per cent.

     

    While there has been an increase in online railway ticketing and online air tickets, matrimonial profile uploads and activities on e-commerce sites; there has been a slight decline in the number of resume uploads on recruitment sites. These are some of the findings from the Internet Economy Watch data released by IAMAI (Internet and Mobile Association of India).

     

    The Internet Economy Watch data released is said to be based on absolute numbers captured from relevant sites of verticals encapsulating online usage for e-tailing, online travel and vertical classifieds.

     

    Besides the online railway tickets bookings, the data also reveals that there has also been an increase in the online air tickets as well. The booking of online air tickets is said to have witnessed an increase of 82 per cent year on year wherein on May 2012 online air tickets received 1.67 million in May 2012 from 0.92 million of the corresponding month last year i.e. 2011.

    Vertical Classified Sites:

    Interestingly, the number of resume uploads on recruitment sites have seen a slight decline in May 2012 as compared to the resume uploads in May 2011. Resume uploads on recruitment sites declined from 3.70 million in May 2011 to 3.02 million in May 2012. The resume uploads in April were however 2.05 million. The data captured from 28 online matrimonial sites however shows an annual increase in matrimonial profile uploads from 2.35 million in May 2011 to 2.42 million in May 2012.

    E- Commerce Sites:

    The study shows there has been an increase in user visits to branded apparel and footwear sites from 5.42 million and 5.55 million visits respectively in May 2012 as compared to 4.15 million and 3.28 million visits for the corresponding month last year. While the designer label segment has registered 1.80 million visits in May 2012 as compared to 1.47 million visits in May 2011. The jewelry category has witnessed 1.64 million visits in May 2012 as compared to 1.89 million visits in corresponding month last year.

    Compared to April 2012, there has been a significant increase in e-ticket bookings at irctc.com, resumes uploaded on recruitment sites and visits in e-tailing of branded apparel, footwear and designer label segment in May 2012. On the other hand, there has been a notable decrease in online booking of air tickets and profile uploads on matrimonial sites in May 2012 as compared to April 2012.
