  • Ramnath Goenka Awards presented for journalism

    By Our Staff

The Indian Express Group hosted the 16th edition of the Ramnath Goenka Awards for Excellence in Journalism on March 22, 2023, in Delhi, with Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India, as the Chief Guest. The ceremony honored journalists from both print and broadcast media who have demonstrated exceptional strength of character and integrity while reporting news under challenging or dangerous circumstances.

Addressing the audience in his speech, the chief guest of the evening, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India, said: “The media is the fourth pillar in the conception of the State, and thus an integral component of democracy. A functional and healthy democracy must encourage the development of journalism as an institution that can ask difficult questions to the establishment – or as it is commonly known, ‘speak truth to power.’ The vibrancy of any democracy is compromised when the press is prevented from doing exactly this. The press must remain free if a country is to remain a democracy. India has a great legacy of newspapers which have acted as catalysts of social and political change. Many journalists, both in our country as well as across the world, work in difficult and unfriendly conditions. But they are relentless in the face of adversity and opposition. It is precisely this quality which must not be lost. As citizens, we may not agree with the approach that a journalist has adopted or the conclusions that they reach. I, too, find myself disagreeing with many journalists. After all, who amongst us agrees with all other people? But disagreement must not distort into hatred and hatred must not be permitted to evolve into violence.”

Adding to this, Viveck Goenka, CMD, Indian Express group, said: “An independent judiciary and an independent press are — and will remain — inalienable parts of our democracy. Do what is right irrespective of who is before you, who it’s affecting, and, in this case, who you are challenging” and lauding the CJI’s work, the CMD said “his innovative initiatives to open up court hearings; his use of technology to increase public access to the bench; his moves to bring transparency into the court’s decision-making; his thoughtful, nuanced reflections on the role of the court and its limitations; his acknowledgements of differences. All these are enduring reforms that, I am sure, will strengthen the judiciary and deepen public trust in it.”

As a thank you note, Raj Kamal Jha, Editor-in-chief, The Indian Express, adds “The evening was a “very special story”. 37 pieces of powerful reporting from 27 newsrooms, two books that enriched our understanding of what shaped India and a wonderful applause that cuts across party lines.” Thanking the Chief Justice, he said “Your vision for a free media and your notes of caution affirm our faith that the Supreme Court will remain to borrow a metaphor you used in your recent speech, the north star. For journalists and journalism, year after year, case after case, the star light has illuminated the road ahead. From scrapping the ban of a publication, Romesh Thapar 1950 to protecting the media from executive interference in Indian Express 1984, to extending free speech online, Shreya Singhal 2015 to ensuring journalists personal liberty in Arnab Goswami 2020, the court has kept pushing back at the state to expand our freedoms. That’s why when the lights dim, when a reporter is arrested under a law meant for terrorists, when another is arrested for asking a question, when a university teacher is picked up for sharing a cartoon, a college student for a speech, a film star for a comment, or when a rejoinder to a story comes in the form of a police FIR, we turn to the north star for its guiding light. More so as Chairman Mr Viveck Goenka said a free media and an independent court are kindred spirits. The health of one has serious implications for the health of the other. Both secure an invaluable space. The work we celebrate this evening comes from that space. “Thank you to the winners, we know that an abusive social-media post is more fun to read, summoning righteous rage, needs no effort, being afraid is very easy, but its reporting like yours with fairness and accuracy, with a rigour for detail and a respect for the contrary that best makes the case for journalism.”

  • Indian Express Group announces investments in emerging companies

    By A Correspondent

The Indian Express Group has announced a undisclosed round of investments in emerging companies such as Envoged, PayMango India Private Limited, Mister Homecare Services Private Limited and Spiral Content Solutions Private Limited. The group believes that investing on growing platforms is a natural extension of its strategic business model.

Anant Goenka, Director, The Indian Express (P) Limited, says: “Our first investment was in Chaldal – Bangladesh’s largest online grocery delivery company. Today, after tasting success in our own digital growth story, we at the Express are excited to be associated with such brilliant ideas and passionate entrepreneurs. These digital initiatives are promising and we believe they just need a little support to grow to their full potential.”

Gurgaon-based startup PayMango was founded by two IIT Delhi graduates in June and has already raised upwards of Rs 1 crore. Founders Gajinder Singh & Ram Singla had earlier launched a couple of mobile and marketplace plays.

“In the transformation of #DigitalIndia, The Indian Express is playing a pivotal role. The Indian Express through its quality coverage has become the most shared voice amongst the youth on various social networks. PayMango shares the same vision of Digital Empowerment of the Local Commerce by providing local stores an m-commerce platform to satisfy the demand of the consumers,” says Gajinder Singh, Founder & CEO PayMango.

“For the country to reap benefits of internet we need a Yumist, Groffer or UrbanClap in each locality. That’s how PayMango is providing local commerce wings to fly,” adds Goenka.

Mister Homecare Services Private Limited is a professional on-demand maintenance services organisation for consumers and businesses alike. “The Mr. Homecare family is very happy to have Indian Express on board as one of our investors. We look forward to engaging & working closely with the group as we look to build out a strong backend to service the aggregators in the on-demand home services space,” said Rushabh Vora Co- Founder & CEO.

Brothers Rushabh Vora and Sahil Vora launched the on-demand Home Services Company catering initially to Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore. Mr. Homecare is going to expand its operations to Delhi and other markets in the country soon.

Envoged is a “re-commerce” platform that allows owners of luxury goods like handbags, footwear and accessories to easily sell items that they no longer need. The platform takes care of collecting the items, consigning them, checking for authenticity, determining the ideal resale price and then finally helping sell them online.

“Envoged makes luxury fashion affordable for the aspirational consumers in India. It is a pleasure to have The Indian Express Group invest in us given their reach and connect with a huge class of Indian population aspiring to own luxury in their closets. We’re excited to learn how they’ve achieved their exponential and sustained digital growth over the past few years,” says founder Anandita Singh.

“India hasn’t even scratched the surface of the online luxury fashion market. We’re impressed with the passion and focus that this very young team brings to the table,” says Goenka.

Spiral Content Solutions Private Limited is a content marketplace that curates Indian and international content and makes it available for brands to use on social media and other digital platforms.

This relationship adds tremendous heft to us as we power ahead to build out a content marketplace of the highest quality,” he said.

  • Murdoch’s empire makes 2 buys in India

    By A Correspondent

There were film magazines and film magazines and film magazines. And then there was Screen. A brand born just four years after the country’s independence earned its rep of being a serious film trade publication.

While Filmfare (and later Star & Style, Cine Blitz and Stardust) were built in the fanzine model, Screen was meant for people in the business of cinema or for serious consumers of film information.

There were some trade publications like ‘Trade Guide’ or ‘Film Information’ or ‘Box Office’, but Screen was bigger. Editors like BK Karanjia and later years Udaya Tara Nayar and Bhawana Somaaya.

But over the years, a decision to go in for softer content plus the concentration on film coverage in the dailies ensured that the popularity of Screen eroded, even as the respect for the weekly continued.

Realising the Indian Express group launched the Screen awards and also went in for a digital edition. However, competition on the digital medium was stiff, as newer brands – with no ‘Established in 1951’ pedigree – gaining popularity amongst netizens.

Albeit a brief period when Screen Awards were aired on Colors, the Express group and Star India have had a long and healthy relationship. In early 2014, Screen Awards moved to Life OK and while it was touted as a business decision, industry insiders had then said the reason why this was done was a bigger pact between Express and Star. But that didn’t happen immediately even as there were rumours that the Indian Express was looking at selling Screen at a valuation in the region of Rs 30 crore.

On Monday, March 9, evening, Star India announced the acquisition to the media in general with exclusives to some favoured publications. As part of the transaction, Star will get exclusive ownership of the “Screen” brand franchise including all archival material and transfer of key employees. “The Screen acquisition will yield huge benefits for Star India and for hotstar our digital platform,” said Uday Shankar, CEO of Star India. “We couldn’t be more excited.”

“Screen is a strong and reputable franchise and gives us access to the entertainment editorial suite and the tinsel world, where news that shapes trends is made by film stars, directors and producers,” Mr Shankar said in the communique, adding “The acquisition of Screen will allow us to strengthen and expand the content brand online while taking the awards platform to the next level. There are strong synergies and the combination of the quality content and awards franchise with Star’s presence across television and digital platforms is strategic and scalable.”

“We are delighted to enter into a transaction with Star India. Screen is one of the most reputed film and entertainment properties in the country. We have built this business with lot of passion and are confident that Star will nurture it and take it to greater heights” said Viveck Goenka, Chairman and Managing Director the Indian Express Group.

Speaking on the transaction George Varghese, CEO Indian Express said “Screen is one of our leading properties on the entertainment side of the business. Our decision was driven by our belief in Star’s focus to grow this business, which we believe would translate into adding value for all stakeholders including employees.”

The acquisition will integrate the Screen awards property with Star, besides adding a consumer brand to the network’s digital business. The acquisition makes Star poised to become steward of the great Screen franchise that the Indian Express Group has built over the past many years. Star is uniquely positioned to preserve and build the market presence of Screen through its shared values and complementary resources. This acquisition will enable Star to expand the awards franchise and build the content brand to the next level by taking it online.

Industry analysts say the Rs 30 crore valuation may seem high for the weekly print publication or just the brand, but add the awards to the bouquet and it’s a steal given the yearly fee that Star would be required to pay the Express group for the telecast of the awards. Another analyst who didn’t want to be quoted said that while Star could have set up its own awards, by buying the Screen brand name, it ensures that no other television network can take advantage of the Screen equity.

Amongst film awards, while the Filmfare Awards are considered to be the #1 and most respected and sought after awards, Screen comes second followed by Zee Cine and IIFA and a slew of others. Stardust, which was until last year, the lowest in the ladder appears to have climbed the pecking order given that it has received a shot in the arm post the association with Colors.

Star India is a fully owned subsidiary of 21st Century Fox which is owned by Rupert Murdoch. After the split in businesses recently, the news operations come under News Corp, which in turn has acquired VCCircle, a smartly packaged digital news site dealing in private equity, venture capital and start-ups. VC Circle also runs successful conferences and training programmes. On Monday, News Corp announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire the VCCircle Network, which includes VCCircle.com, Techcircle.in, VCCEdge, VCCircle Training, in addition to a premium-content driven conference business. The terms of the acquisition, which is expected to close in this month, were not disclosed.

“This important investment is a sign of our faith in India’s future and our enthusiasm for working with and building up emerging talents in the country,” said News Corp Chief Executive Robert Thomson. “India is an increasingly meaningful part of our portfolio, which is itself increasingly digital and global.”

“For the past decade, we have built a strong franchise with proprietary data, information, content, and networking capabilities around India’s digital business world,” said P V Sahad, Founder and CEO of VCCircle Network. “Being a part of News Corp will now allow us to accelerate our already aggressive growth plans.”

VCCircle Network is owned by Mosaic Media Ventures Pvt Ltd and has about 100 employees across India, with its headquarters in Noida. Mr Sahad, and the management group, will become part of News Corp’s India team. Mr Sahad will report to News Corp Senior Vice President, Strategy, Raju Narisetti (formerly editor of ‘Mint’).

The VCCircle acquisition builds on News Corp’s recent digital investments in India. In November, News Corp acquired a 25% stake in PropTiger.com, India’s leading online residential real estate platform. In December, News Corp acquired BigDecisions.com, which aims to help Indian consumers make smarter financial decisions through interactive, decision-making tools powered by sophisticated algorithms and data. News Corp also has a presence across India through its Dow Jones, Wall Street Journal and HarperCollins Publishers businesses.

The question which everyone seems to be asking is what next will the Murdoch empire target for acquisition? Could it be more non-news publications with a strong digital play? Guess only time will tell. We’ll bring you a ringside view and some unbiased analyses.
