    By Our Staff

Mumbai-based integrated agency Human, founded by Imran Khan and Chirag Raheja, has signed on Span Wealth as its client.

Commenting on the partnership, Anish Vora, Founder Director of Span Wealth said: “I have known Chirag for a long time and have followed his work extensively. When he informed me that he is starting his own agency, I knew that there would be no one better to entrust with our rebranding needs. Both our companies, SPAN and Human, believe in keeping people at the heart of everything we do – so I hope that this is a long and fruitful relationship which will be beneficial for both parties.”

Added Raheja and Khan, Co-founders and Directors of Human: “Span’s approach to wealth management is very refreshing, and their clients are testament to their abilities. More than product pushers, they are guardians of their clients’ wealth. They’re an idea whose time has come. So when Anish reached out to us with a brief, he really put the ‘happy’ in our new year wishes! We’re stoked to partner with SPAN, and can’t wait to deliver beyond their expectations.”

  • Sam Balsara pays tribute to Parmeshwar Godrej

    By A Correspondent

    Parmeshwar Godrej

This ought to have appeared last week. But when we met Sam Balsara last week on the sidelines of the Ad Club media review, we couldn’t help asking him to write this as he was reminiscing his interactions with Mrs Parmeshwar Godrej, who had passed away a few days earlier (October 10). One of the most high profiles socialites in the country,  Godrej was in recent years known for her work on the fight against AIDS with the Heroes Project that she set up with actor Richard Gere. Earlier, she was known for the branding and advertising initiatives for the Godrej group, especially for Cinthol where she got former cricketer Imran Khan to endorse. Here’s the tribute from Sam Balsara:

It’s difficult to believe that Mrs Godrej is no more. That she was an outstanding lady is an understatement and obvious to those who came in touch with her. I was fortunate to work closely for her. Her first brush with advertising was with brand Cinthol when she wanted to shoot Imran Khan for Cinthol in the 90s. And she wanted the ad to be shot and put on air the next day and I did. I didn’t think it was possible but I tried and succeeded. Such was her drive and determination and enthusiasm that it was difficult to say no.

She always achieved the impossible or improbable and came out with flying colours.

Post Imran, she went on to create outstanding advertising with Vinod Khanna for Cinthol shot by Shantanu Sheorey, with Dimple for Crowning Glossy shot by Zafar Hai and many others.

When Khyber restaurant got burnt, she redid the interiors completely with Hussain and Anjali Ela Menon and kept a burnt down wall intact that drew critical acclaim from the most celebrated professionals.

    Sam Balsara

She was bold, gutsy, down to earth, a creative mind in the real sense of the term and had the pulse of the common man despite the rarefied environs she lived in. There can never be another Mrs Godrej.

  • Imran Khan to endorse MTS in Rs10 crore deal

By Ratna Bhushan & Gulveen Aulakh

Telecom service provider MTS India has roped in Bollywood actor Imran Khan as its brand ambassador for two years. The 10-crore deal makes the Delhi Belly star the latest one to join a long list of celebrities, including Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan and MS Dhoni, endorsing telecom service companies. While it’s the first time that Sistema Shyam TeleServices’ brand has taken the celebrity plunge, Imran already endorses Coke and Levi’s jeans.

MTS India spokesman and celebrity management firm, Kwan Entertainment, which doesn’t manage Khan but helped him striking this deal, declined to comment.

“Imran will promote MTS through mass media, online and below-the-line promotional activities. He will also be part of Red Energy, a youth-centric online activity for the brand,” an official directly involved with the developments said.

While the 2G scam has not deterred telecom firms from wooing celebrity endorsers, it has impacted their ad spends. Eight of the country’s top 10 TV advertisers during January-September this year were consumer goods makers. Idea Cellular was the only telecom firm in the ranking, according to the media research firm TAM.

The telecom sector has been facing tough times with raging controversy on 2G spectrum allocation, rock-bottom tariffs, sliding average revenue per user, thinning margins and falling profits. High interest costs, banks shying away from lending and 3G roaming agreements being disputed by the government add to the sector’s problems.

Approval and introduction of the new telecom policy that would have allowed liberal merger and acquisition norms and helped in consolidation of the sector, has been pushed back by nearly half a year. This may further add to telcos’ woes.
