  • Can one use the word ‘journalist’ for hagiographers?

    By Ranjona Banerji

The doings in Maharashtra have frustrated not just the Bharatiya Janata Party but also journalists who have the BJP beat. These journalists have, after all, spent the last six or seven years building up images of Narendra Modi and lately Amit Shah as veritable supermen, unchallengeable in their enormous store of statecraft and ability.

Even Superman had his kryptonite but let’s not get into comic lore for people who either actually believe the bogus stories of the Bal Narendra or have spent the last six years propagating those lies!

Although there are maps doing the rounds of social media and I saw one in the Times of India yesterday, of how the BJP’s grasp on states has reduced since 2018, there is no need to rejoice that sections of the media have found any courage to stand up to the government. As long as the RSS’s Hindutva propaganda continues to be spread via television and social media – Hindi news channels are major culprits here – the idea that India is a constitutional democracy is getting closer to the shredder.

It is a pity, laughable perhaps, that the journalists who work for these channels do not seem to realise that if the fascist dream they are pushing become a reality, the first lot to lose jobs will be them.

Maharashtra though has shaken the Hindutva tree a bit. Those journalists who informed us that the BJP has working round the clock to save Devendra Fadnavis’s early morning surreptitious swearing in have not now explained how those efforts failed. There is conjecture that Narendra Modi and Amit Shah engineered these late-night events. But there is no confirmation, even from ever-chatty “sources” on how Batman and Robin failed. And we still don’t know the Ajit Pawar story.

Instead, Rahul Kanwal, big cheese at India Today TV, took to Twitter to tell us that he was being abused alike by BJP and Congress trolls and had therefore his channel had done a good job in its abysmal coverage. Kanwal had also “informed” us that Amit Shah had incomparable state craft and that senior unnamed BJP politicians had told him that the “thinking” of Shah and Modi (sorry, it should be Modi and Shah, for now that is) is different from everyone else’s.

Veteran journalist and author Tony Joseph countered Kanwal on Twitter, “That is a self-serving but baseless argument. The strongest criticisms have come from those who are fans of no party, but are outraged by the despicable lows to which most mainstream media has sunk, without spine or spunk to hold the govt of the day accountable to people.”

So who are these journalists accountable to? In any newsrooms, beats are assigned to reporters and often with seniority, political correspondents become experts on any political party they are assigned to. They are therefore expected to have not just institutional knowledge, or invites to cosy single malt dinners, but the inside track and of understanding of the party’s internal wranglings. You will notice that almost all journalists on the BJP beat indulge mainly in hagiography. Not accountable to the reader or viewer then.

Most of the media criticism of the Congress however, as an example, also comes from old Congress hands who have honed their skills on covering the Congress. These are the journalists who remind you that every transgression by the BJP has a parallel in the Congress’s past. They are the ones who therefore set the agenda for the new BJP lot: that you can easily spin myths in praise and deflect all criticism by looking into the past.

To further the point, senior journalist Coomi Kapoor’s column in the Indian Express has spent five-and-a-half years NOT telling us about what happens inside the corridors of government and instead has focused on what happens in non-BJP party headquarters. The corridors of power have been shielded by shining the spotlight on the Opposition.

The events in Maharashtra have shown that as far as journalism is concerned, this strategy has reached its limit. I am certain however that these BJP journalists will continue with the BJP agenda of bringing the Uddhav Thackeray-led government down. But how long can one use the word “journalists” for them?

    By A Correspondent

The much-awaited RedInk Awards for Excellence in Indian Journalism 2017 of the Mumbai Presss Club were presented on Wednesday evening in Mumbai with veteran journalist Vinod Dua being conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award and Raj Kamal Jha the Journalist of the Year Award.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was the chief guest for the RedInk Awards, said that he does not buy the argument that there is a threat to the fourth estate. “Constructive journalism always has its own value and at the same time we are open to criticism,” he said, narrating his own experience since he took over as the Chief Minister.  “Tolerance is in the blood of Indians…India traditionally had been a tolerant society,” he said, adding “Our democracy is very strong and it has survived turbulence in the past. The democratic system evolves and corrects itself.”

The Mumbai Press Club felicitated the CM for his role in ensuring the passage of the state Journalist Protection Act.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was bestowed on Vinod Dua for his extensive and versatile contribution to journalism in different formats and subjects. Accepting the coveted award, Dua said: “It is not just an award… it is an honour to me.” He said that it has been noticed that journalists get too close with people in power and often behaving like that. “This is not something that is good,” he said, adding that journalists should also be content by what they are monetarily getting. Besides, one must do what journalists stand for.

The RedInk Award for the ‘Journalist of the Year’ 2017 given to Raj Kamal Jha, Chief Editor of the Indian Express, for providing exemplary stewardship over the last couple of years to the newspaper; and for providing focus and restoring what it has always been known best for – investigative journalism.

“This award belongs to the Indian Express, the entire team,” said Jha, adding: “For us what is important is a good story…and sometimes when we see a good piece from a youngster, we feel that we could not have written it that way.”

Govind Tupe of ‘Sakal’ newspaper was awarded the special RedInk award of ‘Mumbai’s Star Reporter’ – instituted for the first time this year – for helping empower civil society through hard work and dogged follow-ups. Donning the role of a journalist and an RTI activist, he forced the establishment to change its rules bringing all offices of cabinet ministers and ministers of state under the RTI umbrella of ‘public authorities’.

Apart from these, awards were also given in the 10 various categories. The organisers received more than 1,500 entries across categories.

  • Sakal says ‘Good Morning’ to change with power-packed forum

    By A Correspondent

What’s a regional newspaper group doing conducting a two-day seminar called ‘Delivering Change Forum’ at Mumbai’s Nehru Centre? A lot of hot air, you think. Especially since it’s got Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in attendance along with the top deck of his administration.

Get ready for the tripe, you tell yourself. And then you see some pictures posted on Facebook by a few A&M land honchos, and you tell yourself that they must’ve been in attendance thanks to the missives from the affable CEO.

So you give Day 1 a miss. The tweets are promising, but then that’s what one expects from the official handle of any event. Hence the first half of Day 2 is also missed, although the session themes are inviting.

You finally do the trek to the venue, with the hope of meeting some old friends and consuming the yum batatavada and samosa at the canteen. Plus some diet cola to free yourself of some guilt. And scan the exhibits at the art gallery or the books published by the Centre which you always look up but never buy.

Enter the large, well-airconed hall of Nehru Centre. The head of one of the country’s biggest design shops does a “hey”. Along with her two others from Pune. And she berates you for having missed the first day and a half. But then she’s a friend and well-wisher of the big boss. You discount some of the praise.

You are then accosted by the marathon banker. You really missed it, he said. We move on. You really liked it, huh, we quizzed him. “Of course”. And he said how he had thought of just dropping by for the inauguration on Day 1 and since then has been riveted. “Couldn’t get up from the seat”. And you meet another adlander-cum-athlete who echoes the same. And yet another.

You finally sit in for the first post-lunch session. Mobile in hand, checked into Whatsappto fighting away possible boredom. Cut to three hours later. Fourteen calls missed. Some more from bank and telco DSAs. Several messages unread. Although one did make a few exits, met the big boss, the namesake, and a few other friends, the sessions were indeed engaging, albeit on softer issues like design.

So here’s a report based on the communique received from the Sakal Media Group on the event:

“Sakal Media Group organised India’s first “Delivering Change Forum” (DCF) on January 24 and 25 in Mumbai.Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the conference co-organised by Sakal Media Group and DCF (the advisory arm of Sakal Media Group), in cooperation with the Maharashtra government and many institutions from across the globe. “This is the right time to implement new concepts leading to transformation in a country which has the largest youth population in the world. We have to strive hard so that these new emerging concepts reach policy makers and then are implemented,” Fadnavis said.

DCF Founder and Chairman Abhijit Pawar elaborated on the concept of the conference. He said: “Connecting boardroom to grassroots is crucial for bringing about a desired change in society and Delivering Change Forum (DCF) aims at connecting the dots and converging efforts for this transformation”.He further added that ‘Maharashtra which has a large pool of youth and it needs to be channelised to bring about the desired transformation’.  Pawar urged participants to join hands in this work. “The SMG and DCF is a platform for development of women, youth and all sections of society,” he said.

Added Pradeep Dwivedi, CEO, Sakal Media Group: “In today’s context, media has to transcend from being a passive informer and act as vital catalyst for larger change and progress in society. Hence, this conference was designed with enriching content and brought a world class line up of speakers discussing the key trends, innovations and concept proven models, all of which with one objective in mind: To help deliver positive change in society and lead more effectively in the current environment.”

Commented Krishna Menon, CMO, Sakal Media Group: ‘Sakal is fulfilling its social commitment through initiatives such as Tanishka and YIN. As the social change is underway, developments in financial, educational and social sectors should reach all sections of society’.

The event culminated in a dinner over discussions with Ratan Tata, Amitabh Bachchan, Fadnavis (and senior government officials), senior advertising professionals like Sam Balsara, amongst others.”

Notes to oneself: Good Morning! (Sakal is morning in English). Send reminder request to Mr CEO for videos of the two-day proceedings. Pawar-err-Power-packed forum indeed.
