    The Hollywood Reporter India, published by RPSG Lifestyle Media, has appointed Anupama Chopra as Editor.

    Meanwhile, the future of Film Companion, the decade-old website set up by Chopra, is not known. Will it shutter as it is rumoured, or will she hand over the reins (and ownership) to someone else, is not known.

  • IAA to host gender sensitisation summit

    The International Advertising Association (IAA), India chapter is hosting a summit on Gender Sensitisation In Media on July 29 in Mumbai. The theme is Gender Portrayal across the creative spectrum from a 30-second TVC to a three-hour film.

     

    Said Megha Tata, President IAA India: “IAA has always brought forward initiatives that are meaningful and Gender sensitive, on and off screen and has also been the one who has always taken the lead on this issue in the industry. We felt that it is time for all of us to come together and be the voice of change. We want to address the dialogue of gender discrimination across the media spectrum and hope we will collectively bring much needed change in the system.”

     

    Added Nina Elavia Jaipuria, Chairperson, IAA Women Empowerment Committee & Head – Hindi and Kids TV Network, Viacom18 Media Pvt. Ltd: “Over the last decade, women have broken stereotypes in this industry both behind the scenes and on the screen. It’s time we tell more of those stories and break biases. Through this change summit, the IAA brings prominent industry voices to communicate, converge and be the Voices Of Change that we need to empower the narrative.”

     

    The summit shall see leading industry bodies such as ASCI, UNICEF, Tata Institute Of Social Sciences, Unstereotype Alliance and Akshara Centre as partners. Prominent voices like Poonam Mahajan, Vidya Balan, Deepika Warrier, Monika Shergill, Anupama Chopra, Santosh Desai, Nandita Das, Ranveer Brar, Tista Sen, Anuradha Sengupta and others will be in attendance.

     

  • Ormax Media & Film Companion announce 2nd edition of ‘O Womaniya!’

    Media consulting firm Ormax Media and entertainment platform Film Companion announced the launch of the second edition of their initiative on female representation in the Indian entertainment industry, titled O Womaniya! Releasing in June this year, other than the films released in the previous year,  the 2022 edition will also cover the streaming category extensively, analysing major digital-series and direct-to-OTT films, along with theatrical films, released in 2021, across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam entertainment industries. Additionally, the current edition will also analyse female representation in the boardrooms of the top media and entertainment companies in India, and how the industry can work towards creating a nurturing environment that helps women grow into leadership roles.

     

    Speaking about the second edition of the report, Anupama Chopra, Founder & Editor, Film Companion, said: “I believe that cinema can shape the world. Which is why inclusivity and diversity is paramount.   O Womaniya! is our attempt to push the needle to move faster. We hope that data will trigger conversation, which will trigger change. We are happy to collaborate with industry bodies like the Producers Guild of India and Active Telugu Film Producers Guild, and streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, an important part of India’s rapidly evolving creative ecosystem, to take this conversation forward meaningfully.   • Netflix India announces competition for emerging filmmakers

    Netflix India has announced Take Ten, a short film workshop and competition that aims to discover and support emerging filmmakers from diverse backgrounds in India. As a part of this, 10 filmmakers will be given an opportunity to attend workshops by the best in the creative industry and then to make a fully funded short film with a $10,000 grant. The films will be showcased on Netflix’s India YouTube channel.

     

    Take Ten is sponsored by the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, which has dedicated $100 million a year over five years to setting underrepresented communities up for success in the TV and film industries through programs all around the world.

  • Film Companion launches its inaugural Disruptor’s List

    Film Companion, the film content portal set up by journalist Anupama Chopra, announced its first FC Disruptors list recognising prime innovators in entertainment between July 1, 2018 and August 2019.

     

    Speaking on the list and how and why it came about Chopra said: “I love the idea of disruption. The idea behind coming up with such a list was to recognise the contributions of some of the key artists of the Indian film industry and the way they have changed Indian entertainment. Of course lists are designed to create debate – we spent months arguing accomplishments and who should and shouldn’t be on the list. The FC Disruptors list is a snapshot of some of the most exciting work in entertainment.”

  • DISS 2014 showcases motivational entries from India

    The 2014 edition of the ‘Done in 60 Seconds’ competition saw a host of participants from across India sending in their entries to the coveted event.

     

    In November 2013, Jameson and Empire Magazine opened the ‘Done in 60 Seconds 2014’ competition with Talenthouse India to challenge budding filmmakers to recreate classic Hollywood films in less than 60 seconds. Celebrating the golden era of Hollywood, 130 shorts films were crowdsourced on Talenthouse’s platform. Globally, in 2014, India emerged as the second biggest contributor out of 16 countries with Russia having the highest number of entries. This prestigious ranking was achieved by a massive number of entries from Mumbai (50 participants) followed by Delhi and Kolkata with 13 and 12 entries respectively. Bangalore, offered 11 short movies for this competition.

     

    The Indian leg of the globally renowned competition saw acclaimed filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane and film critic Anupama Chopra select India’s entry for the Jameson Empire Awards 2014 from twelve outstanding short-films at the National Grand Finale that was held on 21st February 2014. The winning entry was a one minute short film by Ritesh Varma who recreated the Charlie Chaplin classic, Modern Times in sixty seconds. His film will go on to be featured at the star-studded Jameson Empire Awards 2014 in Britain next month.

     

    Commenting on the event, Arun Mehra, CEO, Talenthouse said, “Talenthouse India today is a promising platform for young filmmakers to showcase their talent. In the past year alone, we have showcased over 1000 short films from over 200 amateur filmmakers.
