  • 2013 – 365 days of engagement

    By Kartik Iyer

It was a year that began with hope. Hope that we were well past the depressed market, the global turmoil and the poor fiscal reports. Hope that predicted media growth in the range of 12+ percent.

But as 2012 wore on, it became clear that this was not to be. While it began well, by the end of the first quarter itself signs of what was to come were being seen. Signs of continuing depression, poor fiscal reports for many European countries and signs of uncontrolled inflation within India. All of this meant that the consumer would react and probably postpone purchase. And so it was through the year. With even the festival season not being able to change the trend. Media growth projections dropped to the 7+ percent levels.

All of this meant that Advertising investments would continue to be challenged for Efficiency. The one word that decided the trends of media in India. So while TV and print continued to be the big boys albeit with low growth numbers, their role was questioned. Digital media became a core part of planning instead of being a media for the leftover budgets and grew at a burning pace of over 35+ percent. Out of Home encompassed the large billboards as well as the Malls, Multiplexes and market places thus growing at a rate of over 10 percent. Social media was no longer about digital alone but also about the various points of social connect like malls, multiplexes etc. And the key objective was to maximize earned media. Which meant that the effort was for every medium to connect with the other and work in tandem to deliver greater effectiveness and engagement.

In this evolving media space, let’s take a closer look at each medium.

Print – Will hold but would definitely face growth challenges. This could be the year when TV overtakes print in terms of ad volumes. It is now for media owners and advertisers to redefine the role for the medium and use it for its inherent strengths. Gimmicks aren’t what Print is for. It’s time it played a role as the ultimate Stature medium. As well as a medium that is with the times and is the fountainhead of details.

TV – Would continue to grow. However audience fragmentation is real and needs to be managed. Digitization will hopefully deliver more realistic information on the consumption trends of the medium and one could see clear niches being carved out. Niches that have their own individual appointments with audiences. Appointments that today have become extremely valuable in the efficiency paradigm.

OOH – Is no longer a single medium but is split into large format on the road OOH, Ambient OOH in malls, multiplexes and market zones and Retail space Out of Home. Another variant is that of Urban and Rural activation. A medium that enables true one to one engagement with consumers who are curious and focused. All of these will have their own unique capabilities and would probably see the highest rate of technology influx. The medium has come of age and it’s now time for advertisers and agencies to understand the capability of the medium and design communication accordingly.

Digital – There is a reason that I have mentioned this last amongst all media. And that is because this medium is ready to take on the role of being the backbone of all communication. Very often one gets to see data that clearly shows that the medium has a limited reach which may be true to an extent. However one must bear in mind that even the latest researches on the medium are dated considering the rapid growth the medium enjoys in being adopted. This medium again can be split into a number of areas like Digital display (static) Digital Video, Search (which can lead to display) and the most underused version which is Mobile.

Mobile – This is the one medium that provides the reach which is wider than any other medium available in the country spanning all of India across Urban and Rural geographies. It is now for the advertiser to get innovative and design communication depending on the capability of the device. And all of this has to be done while encouraging the consumer to opt in for communication. There are already very many cases of brads that have managed to engage across geographies using this medium and it’s time that all advertisers learnt from these pioneering initiatives.

At an overall level, all media will move from being categorized by the material form to the interaction form. So it will no longer be print, TV, Radio, Internet, OOH etc.

It could be categorized as Written, Visual and Engagement. This would mean that a TVC (Video) would play out on TV as well as Digital (Pre rolls etc) and OOH (Ambient spaces, Large format OOH etc). A static ad would be released in dailies, magazines, websites and close format ambient media. Audio would be played out on radio and internet and malls and so on. Furthermore, the ads in dailies and magazines would have QR codes or Layar codes built in so that with the use of mobile devices the static ad could lead to video. Similarly with OOH advertising. And all of these things are happening now. Not in the near future but now.

The die is now cast. Future directions have been defined and 2013 will only see all of the above growing. And digitization will give advertisers more realistic numbers to work with. TV and print will continue to be challenged. Digital will continue on its rampant growth path. Out of Home will become core to engagement plans. Digital will be available in ambient spaces thus merging Digital and Ambient. Brands will start thinking of Integrated Communication Plans rather than media plans. And media will become performance focused and more exciting every day. The good news is that shopping in the last few weeks has seen a significant upswing which could be read as a more upbeat consumer which would be a good point to start from for 2013.

And finally let’s not forget the Consumer who is now the Emperor. India’s youth is impatient and has no time for the old world order. They are moving and want to be seen with brands that are moving at their pace or leading them. They are continually bombarded with communication and don’t have the patience to remember every piece. It is the ones that engage with them regularly and innovatively which will be remembered and those are the brands which will emerge as winners.

  • So will media spends grow at 12 or 8%?

    By Johnson Napier

A lot could be said about how the year 2011 has shaped up for the media industry in India. From a growth perspective, it possibly has shaped up the way brand marketers and industry observers had predicted it to be – a mixed year with its usual set of highs and lows. But despite the rise and fall, the enthusiastic performance displayed by the industry year-on-year is giving players from the space, as also research bodies, enough scope to track down this domain exclusively and come up with studies that predict the trajectory and also crystal-gaze into its performance for the forthcoming year.

In pace with its observations on the growth witnessed by the media industry in India, a couple of media (agency) firms have rolled out reports citing healthy growth numbers for 2011 and a cautious-yet-optimistic trend for next year. After Mindshare India released its annual report titled ‘This Year, Next Year: Indian Media Forecast’, it was the turn of Pitch-Madison to reveal its report last week. Joining the above two reports was another finding from research firm Media Partners Asia that unveiled its study tracking the performance of media in 2011-12. (Disclosure: MxMIndia partnered with Mindshare to publish the report digitally and in print form as ‘The Mindshare Indian Media Forecast 2012’)

    2011 (cr) 2012 (cr) YOY % growth
    Mindshare 33,388 37,397 12
    Pitch-Madison 25,594 28,013 9
    Media Partners Asia 31,400 34,100 8.7

While most studies have predicted a healthy growth trend what is noteworthy is the optimism in numbers that have been expressed through the various reports which range from a modest 8 per cent to a high of 13 per cent. This translates into adspend monies ranging from Rs 25,594 crore to Rs 33,388 crore approximately. As part of the ‘Mindshare Indian Media Forecast 2012’ published by MxMIndia, Ravi Rao, Leader, South Asia, Mindshare had expressed how predicting adspends has become more complex now than ever was. “The economic outlook is something that one can never get the handle right, with most studies not agreeing on one number. But this is what makes it exciting to look and estimate the Adex growth in India. Group M does yeoman’s service of providing some startling numbers based on science rather than gut, even though India tends to buck the trend away from global predictions.”

When analysed further, the Mindshare study predicts an AdEx growth of 12.8 per cent in 2011 with net revenue totalling INR 33,388 crore. This was driven largely by the medium of television that contributed 18 per cent to the growth followed by Print at 7 per cent and Digital at 30 per cent. In fact for 2012, Mindshare predicts an overall growth rate of 12 per cent that will be led by spends on television – 15 per cent, print – 8 per cent and digital – 30 per cent.

As for the insights by MPA, ad revenues in India for 2012 are expected to clock a growth rate of 8.7 per cent. According to MPA, this growth will be primarily driven by MNCs investing in India and stronger MCG sector, and if there are revisions carried out in 2H 2012. As for the advertising growth across key categories, MPA expects robust growth from the FMCG sector, which is the largest advertising category, contributing 30-35 per cent to total ad spend. The study predicts that MNCs are expected to report robust numbers while a few large MNC accounts are looking to increase spends by 50-70 per cent for the coming year. The other sectors that will see heightened activity include Auto – while traditional companies such as Maruti and Hyundai have reduced spends, global car manufacturers investing in India are driving the overall growth for the sector, Telecom and Life Insurance.

On its part, the Pitch-Madison study (published by Pitch magazine, conducted by Madison) predicts a sluggish growth rate of 8 per cent due to slowdown worries in the second half of 2011. It predicts a cautious trend for 2012 which is expected to pick momentum only in the second half. It predicts a growth a 9 per cent with revenues totalling Rs 28,013 crore.

The industry, on its part, seems undeterred with the varying figures being thrown up and appear comfortable with the current state of affairs so far. Divya Gupta, CEO, Dentsu Media India said, “The estimated adspend growth according to us stands at approx 9 per cent. Also, the growth trajectory may have slowed down versus what was reported in the last few years, but it is still very healthy!”

According to Shubha George, Chief Operating Officer, South Asia – MEC, “Our estimate of 2011 closing numbers is close to 13 per cent. When analysed further, the mediums of TV, Digital and Cinema have outperformed vis-a-vis the overall 13 per cent whereas Print and Radio have been below par. As for 2012, our estimates are a percent lower than 2011 at 12 per cent.”

Admitting that the so-called slowdown may have cast its effect on the growth of the industry, Anita Nayyar, Chief Executive Officer – India and South Asia, Havas Media said that “the actual rate that was predicted was in the range of 11-12 per cent but given the slowdown scare and also the volatility that was witnessed in the markets, the rate was revised to be in the region of 9-10 per cent.” Going forward, Nayyar feels that marketers will tread with a cautious approach as they are yet to see signs of recovery – a phenomenon that will start taking place in the second half of 2012. “Large clients like P&G and other FMCG units have announced a slash in the adspend rates. This indicates a cautious approach that’s being taken by the marketers. Even category-wise, sectors like FMCG, finance etc that used to spend heavily have taken a backseat for the moment. But what is surprising is the marketing drive that has been taken out by sectors such as education, real estate and to certain extent even auto, which are continuing to hike their adspend budgets.”

Presenting a rather comprehensive outlook, S Yesudas, Managing Director – Indian sub-continent, Vizeum India stated that while the industry will grow at 10 per cent, growth will come in largely from three areas. “At a broad level it will come from investments in newer markets with the definition of India changing for many categories and consequent expansions. Share of voice reduction by certain categories will be balanced with increase by certain others which will include new launches particularly in the financial, automobile, IT and healthcare segment. Growth will also come from increased investments in the digital as well as out-of-home space and will be further boosted by changes in the audience buying-selling structure of traditional TV medium,” he asserted.

While some clients may have decided to plug the unwarranted spends in advertising there are others who are jumping into the bandwagon to explore opportunities not found before. But slowdown or no slowdown, the industry appears to be keeping pace with its growth story the way it has been since the past few years and would continue to focus on ensuring that clients get maximum ROI for the monies spent.

  • Resolutions for 2012: I shall, I intend, I will…

The new year means making new resolutions, and our industry is no different. MxMIndia spoke to the leading lights of the industry to find out about their resolutions for 2012.

    Tarun Rai, CEO, Worldwide Media

The last few years have been very exciting for me and for Worldwide Media. The pace has been frenetic. The aim is to keep up the momentum. Keep up the excitement for everyone at Worldwide Media. We’ll need to be nimble and flexible since 2012 will bring some surprises. But we want to stay the course. Continue to produce great content for our readers and deliver value to advertisers. And provide opportunities to our employees. In my role as the AIM President, I want to raise the profile of our industry and get the attention it deserves from advertisers. Lots to do and we are raring to go.

    Mahesh Peri, Publisher, Outlook Group

In this year I will really like to see digital media grow. I will like to embrace digital media and make it count on all the parameters. Not only do I want my own organization to do well in it, but the media industry on the whole.

    Sandeep Khosla, CEO, Infomedia18

My professional goal is to take some of the publications we have to a number one brand. When I talk about brands I don’t just mean our publication business, but other media too where we are present – this includes doing well on the internet, ipad and blackberry apps. Also, this year we will also look forward to launching a couple of new magazines especially in the lifestyle segment. As far as personal goals are concerned, I will look forward to divesting more time and energy on philanthropic work, something that I have already been focusing on off late.

Rahul Kansal, Chief Marketing Officer, Times of India Group

My resolutions of late has been not to make any resolutions. But currently in my personal life I wasn’t to develop some more hobbies in a more passionate way. I have already embarked on trying to learn some music and I am taking it very seriously. There are too many professional goals and objectives to name. However, it is basically to ensure that Times of India and all our other brands remain buzzing, not only as newspapers but on all media generally.

Harish Bijoor, Brand Expert and CEO of Harish Bijoor Consults Inc.

My New Year resolution is not to make one this year. I have realized that when I make a resolution, something or the other bites into it and I am not able to keep my commitment hence breaking my resolution.

Agnello Dias, Chairman and Co-founder, TapRoot India

My resolution is to work towards making creativity work in other forms than just the way we have known advertising till now. It would be to look at creating other forms of creativity that can work as product valuation for the client and also create unique property for advertising agency which can be valued in the financial terms. Just to explain something like Kolaveri Di which could have been created by an agency.

Dhunji S Wadia, President, Everest Brand Solutions

Pitch Less – Win More: Use agency resources for existing clients who are paying for your services. Pitch only when the client is serious and not just interested in an agency fashion parade.

Bottom-line and Not Mere Headlines: When acquiring new business, I would urge agency managers to look for bottom-line growth instead of just adding to the top-line (and creating headline news).

Bring Sexy Back: Make the advertising business fun and attractive for all – people within the agency, clients and aspirants

Spread The Good Word: Go to the right forums, seminars, institutes and keep waving the Industry flag high. There’s lots of good in the industry – it just needs the right evangelists.

    Mahesh Chauhan, Salt Brand Solutions

2011 and Salt began my journey towards my dreams. 2012 will be all about continuation. So no doing the ‘new’, but doing a lot more of what we already do at Salt. And that really is about keeping things simple. Good company: There is a huge opportunity in the tough business environment of 2012. Clients today seek partnerships that deliver real value. We have traveled some distance in 2011. We must continue to become their preferred choice. Good work: Continue to focus on work. Continue to build on the enjoyment at work. Argue, fight, laugh, cry, shout, abuse, embrace: all for the simple cause of great work. Good looks: Continue to build on the capabilities at Salt. Continue to hire diverse and outrageous talent that makes us nervous. Foster them so that they create great work. All at Salt will look good! Continue to enjoy everyday. Continue to be simple. Continue to be true to Salt!

Piyush Sharma, CEO, Media Transasia India

On the first hand we will like to consolidate our existing businesses across the brands that we have launched over the last couple of years, while at the same time we will keep our eyes open to any new opportunity that might present itself in new spaces…just like we have done in the past. Here, I am talking about new product launches in magazine space in the Indian market.

Manajit Ghoshal, CEO and MD, Mid Day Infomedia

Very clearly, our goal and aim is to make Mid Day the number one and best local newspaper in Mumbai for young professionals. We have recently showed the best IRS figures in the recent IRS report and we will march towards our goal in 2012.

  • Zee zeal comes to the fore

    By Rishi Vora

The year 2012 promises to be a memorable one for Zee TV, with a celebration to mark the channel’s completing 20 years of being in the broadcast business.

Besides completing 20 years of being in the broadcast business, the channel is expecting to climb the GRP ladder and look to attain leadership position. The road has been patchy at times, competition has stifled its growth and the channel has not quite delivered as per expectations. But, in all certainty, one can say that Zee is one channel which has stuck with the idea of being a family entertainment channel, one that does not believe in spending millions on celebrities, and one that is known to be profitable in the business.

The company is planning to celebrate its 20 years with a campaign that’ll communicate the brand’s philosophy. Though finer details of the campaign are not known, it is learnt that the channel is looking to work more towards the channel brand Zee besides regular marketing campaigns to promote fiction and non-fiction shows.

    Akash Chawla

Marketing Head of the group’s national channels, Akash Chawla admits that Zee has in the past few months taken a beating as far as ratings are concerned. But, at the same time he is of the opinion that 2012 is the year where they will look to change their ranking, where the idea is to be the No 1 player in the next 12 months.

“We will go step-by-step in achieving that goal,” he said. He also mentioned that the first goal will be to reach the No 2 position in the next four months.

Content will play a major role and as a part of the strategy, Zee will look to bring international formats, something which they haven’t tried their hands at in the past. While that is true, the channel will continue to launch home-grown formats too. Recently, the channel launched a couple of fiction shows and is looking to promote them on the back of reality show – Dance India Dance 3 (DID 3), a reality dance format show which Zee is betting big on.

A lot of work has gone in the new media initiatives, promoting DID 3. The channel recently organised a flash mob with the idea to promote the concept of ‘dance’ among viewers (see photograph). Besides that, contests on Facebook, hoarding, press, TV spots supporting the mega campaign. “The idea is to have a dialogue with the viewers. Even in the case of our press ads, we have tried to make a dialogue with our viewers, explained Chawla. “He further added, “We also did a flash mob because we thought it was a great idea. We were launching the show at a peak of a season where people tend to move out a lot. Also we did this when it was a holiday season, so footfalls in public places are likely to be more. If at the end of the day, I can make people dance along with Dance India Dance, the message is there, the engagement is there. The recall value increases.”

Zee Cine Awards will happen in Macau on January 21 and be aired on the network on February 5. The show is promoted across all countries where Zee operates; however, marketing activities are being carried out country wise, where there will be different ideas, contests and marketing plans for different countries. Ditto with sponsorships, where each country will have a different presenting sponsor. For India, the channel has got on board Pan Bahar as the presenting sponsor.

The campaign will cut across outdoor, print, radio, on-air promotions and interactive contests. It will also widely explore the digital space including social media, mobile-based apps and forge strategic tie-ups in every region to ensure a 360* connect with Indian as well as international audiences. This coming together of Zee’s global marketing teams will see more than 30,000 promos running across its global network in 168 countries.

The story doesn’t end here for both Chawla and Zee Group for that matter. From a network point of view, there is a renewed thrust on Zee Classic. One of the three channels that were launched to be on the digital platforms initially. Zee Premier and Zee Action being the remaining two. Having defined a niche for Zee Classic and the fact that the channel has already about 500-odd movies to engage the audience with, the task at hand for Chawla and team is to market the channel more aggressively to that specific niche. The channel launched a new show called Classic Legends, presented by Javed Akhtar.

Digitisation will help boost channel’s profits. It also opens up a whole new channel for marketing. Dish TV being a sister company, and reported to be the largest among DTH players, Chawla says it makes more sense to leverage that platform and generate as much traction from there in promoting the channels shows, particularly reality shows – DID 3 in this case.

So a lot happening. DID 3, Zee Cine Awards, the new media thrust, the plan to be No 2 in four months and No 1 in a year’s time. The task is mammoth as Sony and Colors too are eyeing the No 1 spot. So these are testing times for Zee. Will the pressure of expectations defeat the channel’s ambitious moves? Or will it come out victorious?

  • 2012 for Sagittarius

Most of the long-term planets, with respect to the sign of Sagittarius, will remain scattered for a greater part of the year 2012. This indicates that, akin to the planets, your interests too will be scattered, even confused, indicates Ganesha. Remaining centred and concentrating on your main goals could be a task! The good thing is that your energy levels will be at an all-time high and barring a few seasonal illnesses, you will enjoy good health throughout the year. Your mind and heart may gravitate towards spiritualism like never before, more so since your family life may have been disturbed or vacuous. This shift, thanks to Neptune, may alter many of your previously held beliefs and attitudes. It may make you more sensitive and compassionate towards your family. Single archers may be soon changing their relationship status to ‘committed’. On the work front, you’ll excel, and may see a surge in your creativity. Job opportunities may arise from nowhere, hints Ganesha. Although financially, you are safe, you’ll need to manage your expenditure.

    Home and Family

Your domestic life has been through plenty of upheavals due to Uranus’ presence in your 4th House. However, Uranus has moved out of the House and the circumstances have become less demanding. When Neptune enters your 4th House on February 3rd 2012 to stay anchored for the next 14 years, expect your attitudes and outlook to change greatly, foretells Ganesha. It’s not only you but also your family members who will visibly be calmer, and will feel inclined towards spiritualism. Neptune will also uncover all sorts of secrets, which may sometimes shock you, and may sometimes pleasantly surprise you. However, you will feel lighter and calmer at the end of it.

    Love and Social Life

Venus’ unusually long transit indicates you will get into a serious, committed relationship. Moreover, when Jupiter will enter your 7th House on June 11th 2012, the romantic possibilities will be more potent. Your romantic endeavours are likely to be successful this year, predicts Ganesha. If you are unmarried, this year could bring you into contact with your life partner. This transit also indicates that you will function like a go-getter, take charge of your life and won’t wait for things to happen. You are determined to get what you want. Go, chase your dreams! Ganesha’s blessings are with you.

    Health

Your health will not cause any concerns with Jupiter, your ruling planet, placed in your health House till June 11. As a result of this aspect, you will enjoy good health, and will most probably be focused on maintaining good health and fitness. However, don’t take your health for granted, especially from June 11 to July  2012. Your relationships and health are correlated as Venus is your health planet. So if you encounter any problems on the health front, Ganesha advises you to review your relationships first, so that you can identify the root causes and restore harmony.

    Career and Finance

It is the right time to get rid of excess baggage, eliminate wasteful expenditure, throw out all the things that you don’t need any more, maybe invest surplus funds more profitably, or even realign your financial goals, says Ganesha. Pluto in your finance House indicates that there may be an inheritance coming your way. You may be all set to get an increase of revenue from your insurance and royalties. Ganesha throws in a word of caution here and says that you should manage your debts very carefully and wisely. Take loans only for constructive purposes, because borrowings which won’t generate revenue will surely become burdensome for you.

  • 2012 for Libra

You will practically heave a sigh of relief as the year 2011 wraps up, says Ganesha. The year 2012 will be all about changes – for good! Your personal, social, financial and spiritual life is likely to undergo a transition. The storms of the past may not be over, but they definitely will abate. It’s time for re-evaluations and second chances, and that includes a relationship that you may have thought as irreparable. Ups and downs in your personal and professional realms are possible, but aren’t they for everyone, exclaims Ganesha! Health will be fine, but there will be burdens, many of which would be self-invited. Stress and tension may be the rightful results of all the over-work! Look to de-stress using relaxation therapies. You may also plan to refurbish your home, which will help you take your mind off for some time. Unexpected expenses are likely to mount. And your love life may not improve dramatically, but it will, in its due course. For now, just hang on, and turn to divine help and spirituality, for a better tomorrow, says Ganesha!

    Home and Family Life

Your home and domestic life is getting influenced by a variety of factors. In 2008, Pluto moved into your 4th House of family and home, and it’s going to be anchored there for many more years. It is, therefore, likely to impact your domestic life greatly, indicates Ganesha. Your relationships, emotions, and domestic life in general are going through a lot of changes. This year too, there are likely to be minor and major changes on your home front. Many negative aspects and shortcomings will be made manifest, but take it as a clue to become aware of these and take appropriate steps to purge yourself of their deleterious effects. It will not be easy, but the detoxification process is going to take place whether you like it or not. And, thus there is no point in resisting it; just let it happen, because it’s going to bring positive changes in its wake. Saturn, your family planet, is going to be in your own sign for the better part of 2012, making you devote more time to your domestic life.

    Love and Social Life

Uranus moved into your 7th House in the year 2011, and shall stay put there for six more years. This indicates a lot of changes as far as your current relationships are concerned. Expect these changes to be a mixed bag – some good, some bad. The strength of your love and friendships both may be tested. If these relationships are deep-rooted, they will survive the storms, assures Ganesha. But superficial ones may not stand up to the test. By the time Uranus moves out of your 7th House, you will have realised who your good friends are, and who are/were merely fair-weather buddies. This aspect applies to not only your personal relationships but also to business partnerships. Ganesha will help you through all this, hence have faith and carry on, without being bitter or vindictive. However, marriage is not on the cards this year. In fact, you need to eschew it.

    Health

The year 2012 looks definitely better on this front, affirms Ganesha. Your health is going to get better with each day, rather. But you may still not be able to breathe easy. Though things are getting better, you still need to be very careful about you health, and keep a safe distance from hazardous situations. Your 6th House of health, which was vacant last year, becomes strong after February 3rd, which indicates that you will take your health seriously, says Ganesha.

    Career and Finance

Brace yourself for a rough ride in the year ahead, as far as your finances are concerned. This is because Uranus is aligned squarely with your financial planet, with which Saturn also is making an unfavourable aspect. However, Saturn’s aspect is not as powerful as last year, so you may get a few moments of respite. These two aspects indicate that you will have to work much harder than usual to achieve your financial targets, says Ganesha. There may also be many upheavals in your financial situation this year. Some of them could be bolts from the blue! And some, minor whiffs in comparison to others. By the end of the year, your whole outlook on finances will have undergone a change, not just how you earn and spend your money but even your financial strategies. But, then a lot also depends on financial conditions in the world around you. A word of consolation from Ganesha here: Be patient, and you may see sunshine financially, once the dust settles. Some disturbing financial dealings may set you back for some time, but eventually you will be able to see the real good come out of it.

  • 2012 for Capricorn

Energetic and enthusiastic, you begin the year on a positive note. Although your health may still continue to be your biggest concern, expect your energy and determination levels to go up. You have always enjoyed your work, and shall do so even more in 2012. And, this gets better by mid-October! You will excel in your work, and will reap rich rewards. Switching jobs for better prospects, relocation and buying a new home is on the cards, too. You may spend a fortune doing up your new home and buying the latest gadgets. But be careful about your finances, as your income is likely to fluctuate. On the relationship front, couples will enjoy marital bliss, while singles have romantic dates and dinners lined-up. All in all a rewarding year for goats is in store, assures Ganesha. Yet, if you are still feeling empty and confused, remember that emotional disharmony is the main reason why prayers are not answered. If you don’t seem to be deriving any benefit from your spiritual practices, the fault is not with the Divine, but maybe is within you, points Ganesha. So, get up and get hold of your life!

    Home and Domestic Life

For the next six years your 4th House will be a House of power, and may cause you much confusion and distress, so Ganesha advises you to brace for the challenge. And, also start ‘relaxing’ as and when possible. You may not have ‘real problems’, but given the sheer momentum of movement and chaos of the things around you, you may start imagining them, points Ganesha. And, since yours is a stable, earth sign, you would obviously not like so much change and movement. Uranus in the 4th House also suggests a variety of things, most important of them being nagged by a constant desire to shift homes, places, jobs, cities even. This year, quite contrary to your usual nature, you may throw all the rule books out of the window, when it comes to your personal and domestic life.

    Love Life

This year, Ganesha gives you a stable love relationship, and that is not a small thing. So, enjoy! There may not be much change in your marital or single status in 2012, as your 7th House of love and marriage is not a house of power. All in all the status quo will be maintained – marriages will run smoothly, while singles, most likely, shall remain single. The largely unoccupied 7th House in your chart shall give you a lot of leeway in this area, though. That is, a lot depends on what you want, and how you want the things to go. So, if your desire to marry is strong enough, you may probably end up marrying your chosen one. However, as a general rule such a strong desire is unlikely during the current planetary aspects. Though marriage is not on the cards for you, singles will enjoy dating and romantic encounters.

    Health Graph

There are three long-term planets in a stressful aspect with your sign in 2012. This is an improvement from last year when there were four, though this is little consolation. Health will continue to be a cause for concern for you. But, as the year progresses these concerns will reduce, especially when Saturn drifts away on October 5 from its stressful aspect with your sign. From April 3 onwards itself, though, your 6th House, the House of health, is getting strong. It means that you are likely to be paying more attention to your health. You will also need to conserve your energy and vitality during the year. If there is work that you can delegate, by all means, do it.  However, last year was tougher for you on account of health, so if you made it through 2011 without any major glitch, you will probably coast through 2012 with considerable ease. But that should not give you any reason to loosen up in this department. Pluto is in your own sign which indicates that a detox program will benefit you.

    Career and Finance

This is a volatile year as far as your finances are concerned. Uranus is your financial planet, and it spends the whole year in a square aspect with Pluto. Ganesha says you can expect major changes this year. There is a divine cleansing going on in your financial life, as in, many erroneous decisions that you made in the past – like wrong planning and bad execution – are now being uncovered so that you can set them right. Avoid lending money to friends and relatives. You may also spend considerably in home improvement projects, and a definite emphasis is on increasing your standard of living. Besides, you will also come across opportunities to work from home and earn money, or you could profit from family connections. Despite such myriad interests, your actual earnings may fluctuate wildly this year. They may either be too much or too little, making a rather inconsistent pattern. This is a very new thing for you steady goats, but take it easy, as this too shall pass, says Ganesha. The good thing is that, this year, at least, you are more at ease, in tune, with your job or business, unlike last year, when you were very uncomfortable about it.

  • 2012 for Pisces

Unlike your usual self, you will be filled with a desire to express yourself in the year 2012. Your confidence will improve, and you will look to broaden your vistas. And, about time too, says Ganesha! The results of this change in your outlook and attitude will be very visible – your social esteem will improve. A spiritual way of life has always enchanted you, and it will be the same now too! Yet, practicality is the call of the day. Your relationships and friendships may have been tested in the last few months. This year, you will need to come to terms with it all, and being realistic will come in handy, indicates Ganesha. Your financial situation may be swinging wildly in 2012. Although the year may have a fair share of challenges, you’ll handle it gracefully You may also be looking forward to occasions and celebrations to bring your family members closer. Bumping into a ‘special one’ at such an event is also a possibility. On the career front, this is a year full of possibilities. Health-wise the year looks benign, yet be careful of seemingly little health troubles.

    Home and Domestic Life

Venus enters your 4th House on April 3, and stays there for the unusually lengthy period of four months, while Jupiter enters this House on June 11. Both are good omens for you, says Ganesha. Expect happiness and a buzz of activity on the home and family front. However, there are two challenges this year in the form of two eclipses in this House. But, if you concentrate all your positive energies and focus on this area, you will find the necessary determination to overcome any challenges cosmos may hurl at you, assures Ganesha. There are chances of setting up a little office at home, thanks to your career planet Jupiter and its entry to your House of domestic affairs. You may also look to expand one, if you already have it. And you may also look to promote your career with a little help from home. There could also be new career opportunities coming your way through family connections.

    Love Life

Your 7th House of love and marriage has been occupied by Mars since a long time. As a general rule, this aspect is not propitious for love and matters of the heart. As result, your relationships may go through some trials and tribulations, says Ganesha. Conflicts of ego are also possible, but it will be best to steer clear of them – for your good. If your love bonds are strong enough, they will manage to weather the storms, assures Ganesha. If you are single, you will be more aggressive, more proactive than ever in love. Decisions about committing to a serious relationship may not be well thought of, though, so take care and shun your rose-tinted glasses for some time. Your love planet is Mercury, and this swift-moving planet goes retrograde three times in a year. These three phases during 2012 – March 12 to April 5, July 15 to August 7, and November 6 to November 25 – will not be not favourable for getting involved into/ starting a long-term relationship. You will need to patiently see off these three phases, says Ganesha.

    Health

Your health is good this year, but Ganesha warns you to beware of accidents. As already said, all long-term planets will be in either a harmonious or a neutral aspect with your sign till June 11. In fact, your 6th House of health is empty, and you may not need to worry on account of planets, this year. However, don’t let any of this make you complacent. Jupiter’s mildly stressful aspect beginning June 11 should not be very bothersome, though. It is, rather, Mars in Virgo from the beginning of the year to July 3 that should cause you more concern on the health front. During this period there is a danger of accidents. You have a healthy but sensitive body, and with Neptune entering your 1st House, it may become even more sensitive. You will find yourself inclining towards spirituality, and you may consequently feel motivated to make appropriate changes to your diet and lifestyle.

    Career and Finance

From a cosmic point of view, says Ganesha, you are being given financial independence, but it is also likely to heavily disturb the established status quo. As you are led towards financial freedom, many old patterns of thinking and working, and attachments to material things will have to be either abandoned or totally overhauled. You are still in only the second year of the seven-year-long influence of Uranus in your charts, and it is only after this phase is completed that you will be able to achieve and experience true financial freedom. So, carry on, unrelentingly, and your efforts shall be paid off. There are chances that your swinging fortunes may frustrate you, tire you or may even depress you – don’t accept defeat yet, for many of the changes happening now may have long-term implications on your financial future, and for good, says Ganesha!

  • 2012 for Scorpio

The trends of last year continue this year for Scorpio, but with additional focus and augmented aspirations. Professional demands take up much of your time, and rightfully so, as everything else looks quite sorted. Although on the financial front, things remain largely unchanged, there are chances of profitable partnerships or lucrative ventures. Change is the keyword, even at work. Socialising, communications, information technology, spirituality and intellectual activities will take up your time and interest. Attending parties and rubbing shoulders with the high and mighty may become a part of your routine this year. Your love life looks scintillating for the major part of the year. However, don’t neglect your family amidst all the buzz. Your relationships and attitudes towards your domestic life look set to undergo major changes this year. Be accountable for your responsibilities, and it in turn shall help you avoid conflicts and arguments, says Ganesha. Stress may adversely affect your health, especially post October 2012. Take care while driving and performing mundane tasks around the house.

    Highlights and Major Trends

After having stayed for many years in your 4th House of home and family, Neptune now exits Aquarius and enters your 5th House of Pisces. Here, too, Neptune will be anchored for many more years. Ganesha says this shows that your personal interests too are now becoming more elevated, and you are leaning more and more towards all things spiritual. You will prefer to spend your leisure time in spiritual pursuits rather than watching films or engaging in other worldly entertainment activities. The influence will rub off on children too. The trends of last year continue this year as far as your love and family life are concerned. Many of you married or got involved in long-term love affairs last year, and there will be no change on this front till June 11. Also, you seem to be more sexually driven, which is a good thing for your sign, as you need a constant creative outlet. The ruling planet of your horoscope, Pluto, has been camping in your 3rd House of communication since 2008 and will stay there for many more years. This indicates that communications and intellectual activities will dominate your life. You will broaden your horizons of knowledge. Throughout the year, Pluto will be in a square aspect with the tumultuous Uranus, so you will have to drive carefully and avoid risky ventures. Saturn too has been present in your 12th House of spirituality for the last two years, and will stay there for almost the whole of this year.

    Home and Domestic Life

Unlike in recent years, your 4th House of home and family is less powerful this year. Neptune moves out of this House on February 3 and enters your 5th House where it will stay for many years. Moreover, last year, your family planet Uranus entered Aries, your House of health. All these transits indicate that this is a tumultuous year for family life. Relationships and attitudes will undergo major changes this year. You will be more mindful of the health of your family than your own, especially of an elderly member of the family. In recent years, your home has been a sort of an entertainment centre, but now you turn it into more of a health centre. You will buy and set up health and exercise equipment in your home, while removing all such equipment that may be hazardous to health, for example toxic paint or furniture with sharp edges. Ganesha says there will be opportunities to shift home in June and July, but many of you, especially those who shifted in recent years, will prefer to stay where you are.

    Love and Social Life

This year, just like last year, at least till June 11, is very favourable for love. Marriages, or relationships that are equally intimate, are strongly indicated by Jupiter which is in your 7th House. If they didn’t materialise last year, they are likely to happen this year. At any rate, says Ganesha, you will certainly have a very active social life, what with you throwing and attending parties, making friends with the high and mighty and getting invited to the best dos in town. Paint the town red, but be careful of yourself and your energy, warns Ganesha. What’s more, most of the people with whom you are socialising will be the ones with whom you work – business partners, associates, colleagues. Your love life and financial life are intricately woven together. And this is a good thing for you, this year, confirms Ganesha. Not just your friends, but even your spouse is getting richer now, and you will have all the support that they or their wealth can offer.

    Health

Even though there are no problems on the health front – in fact, for most of you health this year is much better than last year – you are focused on your 6th House of health because of your eagerness  not only to maintain and improve your health but also to prevent health problems in future. Neptune transits from a stressful to a harmonious aspect for you on February 3, while Jupiter will be in a stressful aspect till June 11, after which it will drift away. Ganesha warns that you may expect Saturn to kick off a long-term stressful aspect when it enters your sign on October 5. You are experimenting a lot in matters of health, which is perhaps because of the presence of Uranus in your 6th House, where it will stay put for many more years. You will prefer to go in for alternative medicine therapies, rather than traditional methods, and by trial and error you will begin to learn to observe the reactions of your body to various techniques, whether it is reiki or acupressure or reflexology. Ganesha says the point to remember here is that you are beginning to realise that what suits someone else may not necessarily suit you, and the other way round.

    Career and Finance

Your financial House is not too powerful this year, so financial matters will remain more or less in limbo, ie there will not be many changes this year. The planetary dynamics are not exerting any pulls and pressures, except for a lunar eclipse on June 4th which will cause minor tweaking in your financial matters. Jupiter, your financial planet, moved into your 7th House in June last year, and will stay there till June 11 this year. Ganesha says that for singles this move indicates a marriage with someone rich, while for those who are married, it indicates that there will be financial support forthcoming from the spouse. This transit could also indicate a profitable partnership, or some lucrative venture. Friends too will support you not only financially, but also by opening up new opportunities for you. Way to go!

  • 2012 for Aquarius

The year 2012 is likely to mark a significant development on the personal as well as professional front for you. Home and family activities will come to the fore, and you will try your best to fulfil the demands of your loved ones. Some transformations are in store on this front, but they will be for the better, says Ganesha. For singles, chances are bleak for a committed relationship, but remain optimistic and don’t let a personal crisis affect your career. Barring a few glitches, the year 2012 looks set to be quite positive for you. Married ones may be planning a baby. Owing to a major move by Uranus, you may see your belief systems and preferences getting altered, though. Your creativity will peak, and your skills and true potential shall find an outlet. Now, that’s going to be very satisfying! However, be cautious while signing any legal documents or getting into any deals, as a secret clause may lead to misunderstandings, warns Ganesha. Communications, new-age technology and gadgetry will hold your attention like nothing else does. Do take time out to relax and de-stress, though.

    Home and Family Life

Jupiter is transiting through your 4th House, the House of home, and the transit shall continue till June 11. This transit will augur winds of change, and they may begin with some tangible changes in form of either a new home, a refurbished one or an addition to the family unit by the way of marriage of birth. In 2012, Ganesha says, friendships will flourish, and there will be a good rapport between your friends and your family members. You are blessed to have some loyal and supportive friends who will help you achieve the goals you set for your family. The time is good for prosperity and family support too. Enjoy!

    Love and Social Life

Expect no major changes to occur in your love life, as there are not going be any major cosmic pulls, pressures or even movements on this front. However, this does not mean that there will not be any romantic opportunities. In fact, casual link-ups and flings are likely, but refrain from reading too much into a casual relationship. And, if you see any potential, slow down and test the waters first, advises Ganesha. For those of you who are gearing up for marriage, the favourable phases during which you will be presented with many chances are from March 20 to March 31, July 22 to August 1, and September 6 to 14. However, make sure you choose the right person to be your life partner.

    Health

Your 6th House of health is not strong, but you don’t have to worry about it as the long-term planets are favouring you. Ganesha advises you to regularly go for massages and relaxation therapies, so that you make your health even better. Allow rest for your ankles and calves, have a balanced diet and detox every once in a while. You need emotional harmony and a peaceful domestic life to feel completely healthy and well. This need can be attributed to the Moon, your health planet. So, keep your moods as positive as possible, because a negative mood can develop into distress/ depression, if you are not alert enough to nip it in the bud, says Ganesha.

    Career and Finance

This year will mostly be a continuity of the trends that you witnessed last year. Your planet of finance, Neptune, which also happens to be the most spiritual of all planets, will exert even more influence on all your activities and decisions, especially as it will be in its own sign and House. You depend heavily on your instincts in financial matters. Not that your intuition leads you in the wrong direction, but it’s advisable that you back your insights with some real research, advises Ganesha. Scrutinize the fine print with a magnifying glass before committing yourself to any monetary deal.

  • 2012 for Taurus

Being health-conscious is not new for you, but this may become a passion now, indicates Ganesha. Your sincere attempts to maintain a healthy lifestyle will yield positive results, more than ever, in the year 2012! To help you further, stars will ease off all health-related issues in 2012. Finances, career, love, spirituality and social welfare are other areas that will remain in focus. This year also heralds a prosperous time for bulls, thanks to the optimistic planet Jupiter. Travel, family time, joyous occasions – the truly good things in life will be on offer! Cash inflow will be more than decent, and an inheritance may also be in the offing. You may even be able to arrange funds for your ambitious ventures. Splurging on attaining the luxuries of life is also on the cards. Do guard against over-spending and rash behaviour, though. Love life and family may become a cause of stress. And your inability to handle delicate situations tactfully may worsen the situation, warns Ganesha. Try and resolve conflicts, rather than adding fuel to them. Marrying in 2012 is not a good idea.

    Home and Family Life

The stars suggest that there are going to be no major changes on the domestic front in the year 2012. Yet, even if things don’t take a turn for the better, they will not change for the worse either, assures Ganesha.  From May 6 to 14, your family planet, the Sun, will be travelling with Jupiter. This is a favourable aspect. You may look to renovate or expand your current home, or may also move to another home for good. The days between July 22 and August 22, and between September 6 and October 5 are favourable days for home and family matters. At the time of solar eclipses, though, some problems and misunderstandings may resurface in your personal life. Rein in your anger at the times of family disagreements or conflicts to steer clear of any major issues later.

    Love and Social Life

Sometimes the weight of expectations in relationships becomes too much to bear, muses Ganesha. And it may pull you down this year. But then, there are no free lunches in this world. Each relationship comes with its perks and demands. Face the responsibilities with courage, and if need be discuss things candidly. Such heart-to-heart chats can give your relationship a new lease of life. Make sure you reach the root cause of your conflicts, and work together with your beloved to uproot it completely. Such an approach will help you sail though the year on a high note. Saturn will enter your 7th House, that is the House of love and marriage, towards the end of the year 2012. This could be a tricky phase, and you will need to be very patient and careful in matters of heart and esteem. Your social standing matters a lot to you, and you would do well to guard it at all times.

    Health

In the year 2012, your aim will be improving your health and fitness in a holistic way. Your 6th House, the House of health, indicates that matters related to health are going to be in focus during the year 2012. However, you are advised to not make a mountain out of a molehill, when it comes to health related issues. There may be times when you’ll feel tired or stressed out. You may also fall sick. But, there is nothing to worry; you need not hit the panic button, assures Ganesha. All major long-term planets are, for a good part of the year, in a good aspect and when they are not, they wil hardly affect you by their positions. All in all, barring few problems, your health throughout the year is likely to be good.

    Career and Finance

Money may pour in from many directions in 2012. Moreover, your business decisions may turn out to be lucrative and give your better than expected results. In the year 2012, your career planet is going to be in your 12th House. This planetary position indicates that you will continue to stay focused on your career for a long time. However, increasing your bank balance and achieving targets should not be your only consideration, says Ganesha. Rather, you should do something for society, too. While you are likely to have smooth sailing on the financial front, a few matters related to your career may give you some sleepless nights. You may want choose a career option that would allow you more freedom. A business venture or a freelance project may fit the bill.

  • 2012 for Gemini

In 2012, Ganesha nods at your never-say-die spirit! You may have had some really tough challenges to face in the past few years. If not, then at least some major life-altering adjustments may have taken up your time and energy. Expect things to improve. In 2012, Neptune enters your 10th House. This will boost your spirituality and faith. Matters related to body, health, your personal image, creativity, family and mystical sciences shall be of great interest to you. Barring a few minor issues, your health is likely to be good throughout the year. Don’t be complacent, though! Expect prosperity to get a boost mid-year, thanks to Jupiter. You will have money to spend on the luxuries of life. You may be looking at renovating your living space or may even be re-thinking a relationship. If a friend/ relative is taking up a lot of your time, it’s time to say ‘me first’. Do that and bid them a goodbye, says Ganesha! Guard you and your loved ones against minor accidents. You may also see love and work intermingling. Enjoy!

    Home and Family Life

Your 4th House of home and family shall remain strong for a better part of the year 2012; not for the whole year, though. Mars hovers in this House for a pretty long duration – for over six months from January 1 to July 3. This means that you will undertake a thorough overhauling of your home. Whatever it is, it will keep you happily on your toes. However, your domestic life may become tumultuous during the period when Mars transits over your sign. Tempers will run high in the household, and if you don’t take charge of things in a mature way, it may lead to conflicts. An elderly person or a parent may not have been keeping well. Advise this person to calm down. Keep away dangerous objects like matches, knives, or inflammable material from you and your loved ones. But rest assured that things will be happy and endings will be happier, especially if you are ready to go an extra mile, sums up Ganesha.

    Love and Social Life

Love is most certainly on the cards this year for you. There are signs in your horoscope that strongly indicate a gradual building up of your love and social life, even though your 7th House of love and marriage is rather weak. Two vital planetary movements are indicated this year for your sign. Jupiter (your love planet) will be passing through your ascendant, and will foray into the 1st House on June 11. For the remaining year, it will continue to remain in your 1st House. This strongly portends love. Besides that, Venus (the generic love planet) will hover above your zodiac for a rather lengthy period. Usually, Venus spends around a month in any sign, but in your case, it’s staying put from April 3 to August 7. It is yet another strong sign of love present or blossoming in all its glory. From June 11 to August 7, both the love planets in your charts will remain in your own sign. So, you can be sure that love, perhaps even marriage, will happen this year.

    Health

Health of Gemini this year should be satisfactory. The aspect of most of the long-term planets looks set to be harmonious. At the most, they will leave you untouched. An unfavourable aspect made by Neptune, though, may stress you out briefly. Besides that, there may be passing phases during the year, resulting from general planetary transits, during which you may feel a little under the weather. But you need not worry about these bouts, because they do not indicate trends, and are only temporary.

    Career and Finance

You may look forward to a financially progressive year, during which you’ll see an augmentation in your wealth, earnings and even the value of your property. The results may not be drastically visible in the first half of the year. But, post June 11, your prosperous phase will set in and will continue into the following year, confirms Ganesha. In the first week of June Jupiter enters your sign, bringing with it a lot of optimism. People usually mistake wealth for a load of money, whereas it is actually the lifestyle and a general ease with which you go about your work, business or money-related tasks. As far as your career is concerned, matters seem to be a bit more complex, though. Rein in your own expectations from your career.
