Dear MxM

I work with an FMCG company in marketing. Since I have just two years of experience, my bosses did not think I deserve to go to Goafest. This is even though everyone appreciates Goafest, and I genuinely thought I will benefit. Even earlier, I wanted to go for AdAsia, but couldn’t, even then I was not upset because the entry was expensive. But now, I am very disgruntled and want to quit. My parents think it’s not a good reason, but I have not been able to concentrate on my job for the last week. Please help

Wow… That’s some reason for wanting to quit. Hang in there pal. AdAsia is not the end of the world. Yes indeed, it is good to be there but you have a long road ahead and I am sure you will get ample opportunities to attend GoaFest and other larger events and forums.

Companies take these decisions based on various parameters, and cost rationalisation is one major reason. I know of several firms who have cut down on such forum attendance and now work with token presence, if need be.

Don’t take all this to heart, pal. Marketing professionals are built tough!! Have craft? Then chill. The world will recognize it for sure. Cheers.

I am working with one of the top newspapers in the country. I am sorry to say that some of my seniors have just not adapted to modern times. When I suggested to my bosses that there should be a soft skills course for the senior team – including the bosses – I was reprimanded. Should there not be some policy for re-training of key employees? Sir, what is your view?

I absolutely agree with you and this is now pretty much a need, given the mix of old and new in companies. Soft skills and functional skill refreshers are mandatory and all smart companies have an annual training calendar.

Hence if your company thinks its a stupid suggestion, all I can say is that I wish the company luck. When learning is ignored, the vision is narrowed!

Sir, I work with a popular channel in South India. I visited New Delhi recently and I was appalled to find absolute ignorance of what the media scene is in the South. Why this kolaveri, Sir? I was treated as if I am from Scandinavia and was asked the most stupid questions. Grrrrr!

Well, I don’t think the entire market is so dumb, though there are strong north-south mindsets and their radar is narrowed to mediums and brands, which they can relate to and read or view.

This is true in most markets, though honestly it has changed a lot and evenDelhiand other markets are pretty clued on to the reach and clout the southern media wield…

Not to worry, organize a nice get-together in such markets and sell the power of the region and its audience. Soon, the skeptical and ignorant will realize what they are missing! As they say, not to worry da ! Simbly show the power man…
