Dear MxM

My organization has been delaying payment of my salary. The boss says it’s a severe liquidity crunch and a problem of cash flow. What should I do? I wish we had received adequate notice? Is that enough reason for me to start hunting for another job?

I completely understand the position you are in. Salary payments should be the last thing that is delayed. If the organization is faced with a cash flow situation for a month or two, then it may be worth waiting if it is workable for you, else you may as well start looking around.

Today there are several companies who are forced to delay once in a while, since payments from the market are getting inordinately delayed and it’s a chain reaction. Hence, evaluate your monetary situation and if you are otherwise happy in the present organization, bear with it for some time and also look at other options as a fall back.

My boss says that I must tell advertisers that when the chips are down, you must advertise and spend more on marketing. The advertiser says he is barely able to pay monthly salaries and take care of overheads. Is the slowdown really for real?

Yes some sectors are seeing a drop in volumes in advertising in the first quarter. It is tough to convince advertisers at this stage. I would suggest innovative options that would tempt them to spend with your company. Innovation and targeted solutions coupled with high levels of service often works. But your company has to understand that volumes are down currently.

My father says that in his time he would have a dearness allowance component in the salary and so things like inflation and rising petrol prices wouldn’t worry him too much, as salary increases. But none of the big papers in Delhi offer a ‘DA’ to employees as they are on contract. While salaries are good, petrol prices have risen beyond one’s expectations. Please advise.

Yes, the old system of DA has almost been phased out. But salaries have gone up and more so in competitive markets. Petrol hikes like this affect each one of us and I fully understand the impact on the expenses. The only way is to collectively make a representation to have the petrol allowance revised. Its tough on the company but to some extent I am sure they will compensate this increase, I wish you luck with that !!!
