It’s Friday, and time for an-all new edition of Dear MxM. We received several queries, some of which have already been addressed before. As always, we look at three questions and have them responded to by your mentor, Mr Jaisurya Das:
> Sir, is it important for one to be a graduate to be a journalist or a copywriter? My neighbour’s son is a college drop-out and is excellent with the English language. I was asking him to take up a job with an ad agency or a magazine, but he said he’s got rejection mails because he’s not a graduate.
Yes, generally most companies set graduation as the minimum qualification. It may be possible to get into a smaller agency or a more liberal environment where this may be overlooked in favour of talent but it’s safer to have a degree in the long run. May be it would be a good idea for him to look around for a break and do a graduation as well privately in case work starts . Talent will find its space for sure.
> I have been working with this organisation for some years and now find that my new boss is going to be someone I detest and I think is ”bad news” for the organization. What should I do now?
I would suggest you work with an open mind and see how it goes. S/he may end up quite different from what you assume. If it gets tough beyond a point you can always look around. But work without a prejudice and give it your best . All the best!
> Sir, what are the prospects for an Indian media professional to get a job abroad? And could you throw some light on the experiences of people in the past – have they been successful or failures?
Plenty of professionals have been succesful abroad but getting a good break isn’t simple nowadays. The Gulf region may be a good place for an entry since it has a good set of companies in the media space. Smaller regions like Sri Lanka etc could give you some decent exposure. Start looking around if you have the experience and skillsets and am sure a break will come your way. Smaller firms would be a better route to gain entry into international markets. Bon voyage and all good wishes in advance!
